I know it'll be a bit slower than bm, but any major problems there? I might switch it around a bit to try to grab deterrence and counterattack, and get a couple more points in resourcefulness if I really find myself focusing on pvp, but this was mainly designed around bringing effective cc and dps to instances and running around with a boar to tank for me solo.
I don't find BM any better than MM for leveling. Pets hold aggro with the last changes to growl, and if you get a pig, it will never lose aggro. Pet survivability isn't an issue, either, as the new mend pet changes make it easy for your pet to tank 3 mobs with no trouble. MM = BM for leveling. Play what you want, and you'll be fine either way. Just make sure you always have the max rank of growl.
SS/AS/KC Macro sort of takes the Huntering out of being a hunterer, doesn't it? O_o
Depends on your style of huntering. To me its killing shit and providing CC. BM definitely helped the former. Yeah, it can be kinda boring pounding that one button during long boss fights. However there's swapping every 2-3 minutes from damage trinkets/bestial wrath/rapid fire, misdirection or pet tanking for broken aggro, and trapping mobs, so its not like you're just a damage bot. Can't say I really miss constant 3-4 shot rotation.
And if the day comes the raid needs MM I would immediately switch back. Miss scatter/silencing shot.

Well, I have a trinket on a 90 sec timer, I have Rapid Fire on a 3 Minute timer, I still have KC, and I'm called on for misdirect fairly often. It's not like the shot rotation is all a hunter is doing, no matter the spec.
And yes, It'd be great if Scatter and Silencing shots weren't completely useless in a raiding situation. Few mobs are susceptible to Disorient in 25-mans, and even fewer are affected by silencing shot. I don't even have silencing shot, and I'm 40+ points into MM.
EDIT: Forgot one thing. Hunter CC isn't reliable enough for any 25-man content, in my opinion. Helpful on Mags, and Tidewalker, but not necessary.
I'll admit, it just kinda feels cool having a remote damage-dealing and tanking appendage. Not when managing it impedes my damage-dealing potential [and honestly, I was doing less damage when I was BM, for all of that one SP run; I could barely match this one mage who I know I've beaten as MM], but when just casually questing/levelling, it's pretty fun.

Popping bestial wrath + damage trinket + orc racial + intimidation on the random clothie who tries to gank you is very fun.

Well, to be blunt, you have bad gear. But really, your stats levelling don't matter, because the 70 instances are extremly good at giving out blues. If you get into a kara guild you'll also start gearing up quickly. As long as you try to get better gear, your stats when you ding 70 don't matter
I am the biggest RAP whore in the world. I sit at 2530 self-buffed, and 3k Raid-buffed (3100 flasked). It is the greatest thing ever, and I will never stop hoarding RAP. MOAR RAP! Also I haven't played WoW in like a week and I'm just realizing how badly I needed a break.

2530 self buffed? Jesus christ, Mercy. I'm at 2198 self-buffed and that's after squeezing as much as I possibly can out of RAP from my gear. Remind me to never look at your Armory profile unless I am feeling too good about my hunter's progress someday and decide that I need a kick in the dick.
The max dps raid spec is 17/44/0 or something very similar.
A 41/20/0 build is a very solid second place and good if you don't have the cash to drop on the consumables required by the above spec.
Once your buffed agi breaks into the 1100 range you can also safely consider a 0/25/36 or similar build (a favorite of Ahoq - Nihilum's #1 guy).
I've never played a hunter and I've not attempted to do any of the theorycrafting, but experience in my guild, and what seems to be a general consensus on the elitist jerks forums, tells me that BM is the highest raid dps spec.
I'll argue this until the day I die. I've tried both specs extensively, and MM has owned BM every time. The other two hunters in my guild have also tried BM, and have never even come close to keeping up. Not to mention there are a host of pet un-friendly fights.
^^
BM is a totally solid dps build, and the first time I broke into the 1k dps club I was BM, but as you gear up more and more and perfect your shot cycle (and spend asstons of gold on mana pots) a MM/BM build overtakes it.
Talon of Al'ar is an insanely OP trinket, and I could never really find a way to efficiently work AS into my BM shot cycle.
Ultimately, it pays to have both. A lot of the strongest DPS groups end-game stack Hunters - TSA + FI, FI + FI, etc. Throw in a Feral Druid and you have instant synergy (in part because LotP and Imp LotP affects the Hunter and the pet - so you're generating more focus from GftT, your pet is proccing FI more often, and you and your pet are requiring far fewer heals).
Another nice benefit to a BM Hunter is you can more freely place them in a group - stack them with a Shadow Priest and some locks and the FI buff helps everyone while the S Priest gives the Hunter unlimited mana.
But MM/BM was the best AQ/Naxx DPS, and I maintain that it still is the highest Hunter dps spec.

Heh, that's a lot of RAP, but uh, +8 agility gems are more effective, since they stack with kings (And you could use some more crit )

I quite disagree. But thanks for the input. 27% crit in a raid is perfectly fine, with 3k RAP. I promise.
Also, I specced BM over the weekend, for some PvP goodness. This is actually the first time I've ever tried going BM for PvP, and I must say, it's a goddamn blast. Too bad I need to go back to MM tonight, for our raid. Oh, I get my Merciless bow tomorrow, too. Weeeeeeee! Fuck you, Sunfury Bow of Nonexistence!

Well, if you replacd all your +16 gems with +8 gems (I may have factored in the +20), you'd only lose 100 RAP, but gain 3% Crit (Assuming you have kings, and that you were still Marks).
So, 7 Base DPS and 33ish damage off of steady shot, for 3% crit, which is really quite useful

I appreciate the input, but honestly, I'm quite happy with my gems. RAP is guaranteed damage. Crit chance is just that. Chance. I'll stick with the sure bet. When I go survival (for shits and giggles), I'll be socketing all my gear with +AGI gems. For now, i'm extremely pleased with it the way it is.
Also, 14*16 = 224 + 20 = 244 + 10% = 268
Where 14*8 = 112 + 20 = 132 + 10% = 145
So, it's 123 RAP difference, and 2.8 crit chance, or something close to that. I'll stick with what I've got.
And again, I'm not saying you're wrong. Maybe I will see a DPS increase, but I don't think I will, I like what I've got, and I'm not willing to spend 500g making sure I'm correct.
Also, don't look at my armory today. I was BM for the weekend, and my sub 2k RAP is depressing.

I didn't count the gem from your Helm, since it was also a PvP Epic, so I was gong off of 13 gems (Which is more or less 100 RAP difference).
Also, with Kings you'd have a total of 3crit from gems.
And Survival is a more viable raid spec than Marksman right now. Marksman is best for 5v5 Arena, and the weakest of all the trees for raiding (Though currently, the top end guilds just bring a Survival hunter to buff the Rogues and Warriors of the raid)

Gah, I can't escape this argument. I have never ever ever ever ever been out-damaged by a BM spec hunter. I've never done more DPS as a BM spec hunter. I find MM, with stacked attack power, to be marginally superior to BM, and have yet to be proven wrong. Again, I'll argue this until I die, or until an equally geared BM hunter comes anywhere near matching my DPS.
As for survival, I plan on speccing for it as soon as I have 840g to buy the gems I'd need. I'd be sitting around 750 AGI unbuffed, and hopefully damn near 900 Raid buffed and potted. Until I have 840g though, a respec to survival will net me nothing.
Heh, and the argument isn't terribly productive, with no one(me included) giving any real evidence to support one spec being better than the other. I would at least say that all three trees are worthwhile in raiding, and that is to be cherished.
Yeah, I recently had the same thought. Each spec has its hardcore proponents, and no shortage of them, and that tells me something. I get the feeling that a survival spec with high-end gear (>T4) will probably scale better than anything, and at some point it seems that it would have to surpass the other specs, but again, I don't have the 740g I need to test that theory.
Hello, I've recently rerolled hunter and am now up to 44
There is a little problem that I'm facing now in terms of UI space. I know there are mods out there to control your aspects and tracking modes, but i haven't found a good one yet. The AspectBar within Ace2 comes close but there is no documentation with it on how to move it from the centre of the screen.
I just put my typically-used Aspects [Monkey, Hawk, Cheetah] on keybound buttons, then my less oft-used ones [Pack, Wild, etc.] on clickable buttons on my screen. And use TrackingToggle, it's amazing.
I've been using Venantes for that stuff. It's a sphere mod and while I'm not a big fan of those, they work really well with hunters(and paladins for that matter). It has menus for aspects, traps, tracking, all the animal related stuff(animal training, dismiss, feed pet etc). I turned the traps menu off as well as the health pot, mount/hearth and I think maybe one other thing. It has three blank buttons that can handle two functions each. I've set those up to handle eyes of the beast, eagle eye, flare, hunter's mark, scare beast, and beast lore. I set the middle circle up to track pet exp. It's fairly customizable. They're up to version 2 Rc6 but it was a little buggy so I went back to using version 2 Rc4 as it seems to be the most stable.
The thing is, raid DPS is all relative. If you're carrying your weight, and enjoy your spec, fuck the haters
SPeaking of carrying weight, I got my Merciless Gladiator's Crossbow yesterday, and led damage on Lurker by 80k on the first attempt, when I died at 20%. The lock behind me didn't even catch up until 10%. I then led damage by 100k on the second attempt, where we all pretty much got destroyed at the same time (20% or so). Then, the lock says "I'm going to drop Curse of Elements since the mages aren't pulling their weight, and I'm going to put up Curse of Agony, so I can beat you." ... I led damage by 30k when the third attempt was said and done.
Yes, we wiped twice on Lurker. I don't want to talk about it.
Also keep in mind, it's impossible to keep a fully stacked (440 RAP extra) Hunter's Mark on Lurker, due to his Submerge phase, and I was still able to beat out the rogues and the lock. Granted, our top DPSer was absent for last night's raid, and I'm sure he would have beaten me by a fair margin, had he been there. Dude pops haste potions like they are going out of style. Even so, it was a good day, all around. I love this bow. Even if it looks pretty stupid.
Also keep in mind, it's impossible to keep a fully stacked (440 RAP extra) Hunter's Mark on Lurker, due to his Submerge phase, and I was still able to beat out the rogues and the lock.
This specific example will actually be a relatively greater loss of dps for the warlock(more dots falling off when he submerges than you'd have).
They gave the PTR hunters a Gladiator's Crossbow. While I feel comfortable with the speed, at least for PvP, they somehow changed the sound mechanics to where spamming my Steady Shot macro:
/castsequence reset=3 Steady Shot, Auto Shot
...will now cause that stupid "You're trying to use a skill you can't use right now" sound over and over. This is not the case on live servers, and while it is a pretty minor grievance... man, fuck that sound.
And I'm not sure if the Steady Shot macro I use isn't a little different than that -- I don't feel like loading up just to check a macro.
All of your macros are stored in a text file in your character's folder (assuming you're using his personal macros, otherwise it's in your account folder). Just copy/paste that text file into your PTR character's folder and tada, your macros.
While I've got some gold..
Is it worth it to get someone to make the Felstalker set? I don't have 350 LW, so I miss out on the +20 hit.
Having horrible drop rates (As usual) so I don't expect to get the Beast Lord set any time this decade.
Hi all, new hunter here. Decided to roll one after getting tired of tanking instances on my warrior finally. I've got a question about gear while leveling up. So far, I've mainly just outfitted myself with gear from the AH funded by my warrior since I'm not really seeing much in instance loot that looks particularly interesting.
I've gotten the hunter up to lvl 28 after a few days and am starting to think going into the BGs and grabbing the rewards would probably net me better gear than what I'm seeing on loot lists for the upcoming dungeons (SFK, Gnomer, SM, etc). Are there any notable pieces from the upcoming dungeons that I'm simply overlooking? Thanks all for any help.

Fine, Septus. Fine.
Okay, how about this... Last night, on Maulgar, I was sitting at 200k while second place was at 100k. That's a pretty massive spread, no? Obviously that was relatively early into the fight, but I was quite literally doubling the Fire mage's DPS.
I spent my ~700g last night and got +AGI gems and specced survival... Now I just need to get my +35 AGI weapon enchant (for the second time on the same weapon), and I'll be at 806 AGI Unbuffed. Should be good times, raid buffed. Thrill of the Hunt is underwhelming.

Actually the Raging Berserker's Helm is nice at 40. 14 crit rating is quite a bit of crit at lvl 40. Even with the strength, it's still not a bad piece of gear. I'd go so far as to say you'd be hard pressed to find something better.

You should be approaching at least 1400-1500 RAP at least, I'd say. The average AP for BM hunters at 70 seems to be ~1700.

The AspectBar within Ace2 comes close but there is no documentation with it on how to move it from the centre of the screen.
Can anyone recommend a decent mod?
This specific example will actually be a relatively greater loss of dps for the warlock(more dots falling off when he submerges than you'd have).
Is it worth it to get someone to make the Felstalker set? I don't have 350 LW, so I miss out on the +20 hit.
Having horrible drop rates (As usual) so I don't expect to get the Beast Lord set any time this decade.
That said, I did wear the bracers for a long while, because finding better ones outside of Heroics was difficult.
Free mana from a non-mana spell? Why yes, that would be nice. :P
DO NOT WEAR SM MAIL. GOD DAMN YOU, IF YOU DO, SO HELP ME
Actually the Raging Berserker's Helm is nice at 40. 14 crit rating is quite a bit of crit at lvl 40. Even with the strength, it's still not a bad piece of gear. I'd go so far as to say you'd be hard pressed to find something better.
Edit: Nor is the axe.
