DoD source was still pretty awesome. and the content you're talking about is the..tacked on british? i remember playing since 1.3b and the only times I felt like they strayed was when it first went retail, before source.

oh, but right, you're legendary for your bad opinions so i'll leave you mourn the loss of 3.1b

The levels with the German paratrooper guns were gone last I checked, too.

Could just be that everyone played 24/7 Avalanche and whatnot, but I never saw any of my favourite levels, either.

They did rip out a fair amount of content, but the gameplay changes in DoD : Source turned me off of the game completely. Player movement was too fast in DoD :S compared to previous iterations. Totally fucked the game up in my opinion. But that's neither here nor there.

    Pretty games, go!

I completely agree. DoDS feels like it can't decide what kind of game it wants to be. It's too fast to be a slow-paced tactical shooter, but weapons don't react well enough to quick movement for it to be a fast-paced shooter.

It's stuck in some sort of awkward middle of the road solution.

But yes, this is probably the wrong thread.

Shortly after Michel Ancel gave them the finger and left.

He did? Well good for him.
While Ancel was seen as one of the main figures behind the project before E3, he left the project after the revamp, and is only credited with character design in the final game.
I never played a Rayman game (or the Rabbids games) but the commercials are so awesome that I don't care.

If you have a Dreamcast, search out Rayman 2 for it.

If not, go for the PS2 version.

If not for that, go for the N64 version.

    Then the PC version.

And finally if you can't find any of those, the PSX version.

...push coming to shove the DS version will suffice.

Out of all those, I'm eligible for the PSX version. I may get it next paycheck. Always liked the art style of the first game.

While the PSX version isn't bad, I would at least try to get the N64 version or the DC version.

Due to the limitations of the PSX hardware they had to chop up some of the longer levels into separate chunks, so you get longer loading times and less seamless gameplay.

Also of course the weaker graphics, which honestly is the best on the PSX IMHO.

Oh, but my biggest beef with the PSX version is that they added english voiceovers. All the other versions have a Animal Crossing-esque gibberish speech going for them.

But in the end, if the PSX version is your only option, do still try it out.

I thought it was the PS2 version that had the english voiceovers. I've never tried the PS1 version so maybe they both have it.

    snip

    THE EARS BLEED!

So does a large section of the game they cut out. In the PC version, the stomping of the bird launched a box into the air which you could use to climb into a duct. In the rocket section there was this great halfpipe and after flipping the switches, the gate would open, and you'd get chased by the bird. Also, some other stuff.

Oh yeah, you also flew one of the pirate ships around and shot forts to rescue the five hundred babies.

Well my problem with Myst is that really it's a single movie thats paused for puzzles. It's not just pre-rendered backgrounds, it's pre-rendered everything.

No one's mentioned it yet probably because it's not an especially beautiful game for the most part, but I really like some of the areas in The Witcher, especially the druid grove in the swamps. It's far more beautiful in motion, though.

But even the title screen is attractive.

It's true. The original was a faaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic game, but I can't get it to work on Windows Vista (and I am not inviting any discussion on the subject because it could lead terrible places)

However, I am almost too confident that Molyneux will milk another sequel off of the game, and maybe after the immensely negative feedback they'll decide to bring multiplayer back to god game goodness.

Damnit, some of my best suggestions are already up. Why did I bother to read the thread instead of just posting? What the hell, I'll post anyway - 'cause these games have such wicked art direction they deserve it. I'll stick to some PS2 classics... and some games that were perhaps such successful franchises that they've been overlooked as 'games as art'.

    Odin Sphere
Can a game released in 2007 be considered 'classic'? Why not.
    17.jpg
    Beautiful,
    odin-sphere-20070423114358682_640w.jpg
    beautiful,
    odin-sphere-20070423114400479_640w.jpg
    beautiful sprites.

    Okami
Like SoTC, this is one of those games you plan to show your kids one day.
    15.jpg
    Gorgeous environment.
    39.jpg
    Gorgeous combat.
    40.jpg
    Gorgeous magic.

    ICO
    Approaching the definition of 'classic'.
    ico_5_640w.jpg
    Ico
    ico_2_640w.jpg
    and Yorda.

    Devil May Cry
Like Ico, it's an early PS2 title that still holds up today...
    dmc_final_14.jpg
He looks so much cooler than he does in 3.
    dmc_4.jpg
The story goes they were working on environments for a new Resident Evil and they realized they had something very, very different. I love this view of the cathedral.
    dmc_100.jpg
Four words: Magma spider scorpion thingie.

    Ratchet & Clank
The one that started it all.
    Ratchet_051902_7_640w.jpg
They've never made Metropolis any cooler than it was in the first game.
    ratchet_071702_01_640w.jpg
A beautiful environment, enemies to smack around, and bolts. This is Ratchet & Clank.
    clank_screen012.jpg
    Also, making things go boom.

    God of War II
Lots of people argue that God of War doesn't deserve the praise it gets... but you can't deny that it's a massive accomplishment of technology and production values. (significant H-scroll on this one.)
    64.jpg
I should also add the set pieces are amazing.
    tn_565_11.jpg
And the way they weave the story through the mythology of ancient Greece is pretty cool.
    tn_565_36.jpg
They did this on the PS2! How are you not boggled?! It had no load screens, people!

Edit: I'm seriously pissed I couldn't find a decent screenshot of the Steeds of Time for the 'set piece' pic. But Atlas's eye ain't bad.
