Urgent computer issue

Last night I was working on my desktop for a couple of hours and then shut it down normally. Everything was okay with the computer and nothing seemed wrong (its not even connected to the internet). For some reason when I tried turning on the computer this morning it says it cannot boot and gives an error message that either

Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll. is missing or corrupt

and that I have to reinstall this said file

Now I'm not even nearly computer savvy to install windows XP let alone fix this problem but I'm no where near a computer tech (in a extremely rural part of Alberta right now).

I have over 3-4 years worth of work on that desktop and have a project that needs to be completed by the end of this week.

Can anyone give me advice on how to fix my computer idiot like myself?

If you still have your windows XP install disc, you can put it in and boot from it. There will be an option to do a repair install.

If you really get stuck and no one comes up with a better solution, you could always mount your old hard-drive in a new computer and get your files that way.

Just be VERY leery of the word "format" if it ever pops up. Oh, and start backing up more often. :)

I stuck my Windows disk back in and carefully selected the repair option, after following the prompting and waiting for a bit I got this message:

The File "ASMS" on Windows XP Home Edition SP2 CD is needed. Type path where file is located then click ok

But for whatever reason my keyboard and mouse don't work, I can't even select anything! The background describing XP shifts from screen to screen so it seems the computer itself isn't frozen.

Could I get some more advice?

i've often needed a keyboard and mouse that plugged in directly to the keyboard and mouse ports on the back when doing installs,

Does http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/restorehaldll.htm help? Before trying it, shut down the machine, unplug the keyboard/mouse, start it up, shut it down, and replace the keyboard/mouse.

They should be connected with PS/2 (blue and green connectors) rather than USB, just to be safe.

    Oh man I'm pooched.

Okay, I've done everything that is on that website in regards to the repair install and trying to fix the corrupt hal.dll whatever problem.

It all ends on this stupid fucking page (sorry I'm really frustrated right now):

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1_9.htm

    It says exactly:

The File "ASMS" on Windows XP Home Edition SP2 CD is needed. Type path where file is located then click ok

With 39 minutes on the left hand screen.

For whatever reason my mouse and keyboard doesn't work. I've unplugged them and replugged them and made sure they are clean, I've made sure that the computer ports were cleared. The keyboard and mouse work UP until that very page.

Can someone here come up with a possible solution so that this N00b can get back to work?

Well, a lot of people jump to conclusions with this error, but most of the solutions do NOT involve doing a repair install or reformat. Often, this error can occur when a piece of hardware has failed. Or the boot.ini file may have gotten changed/messed up/deleted. The first thing you should do is a chkdsk /r from the Windows recovery console.

After that, follow the recommendations from Microsoft here. Almost everything they cover uses the recovery console, not the Windows install, so hopefully things won't lock up on you like they do when you try a repair.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

Well after 2 days of trying to mess with the computer I'm stuck on the same page (with no mouse and keyboard). I can't even restart the computer to get to the Repair drive again, and its driving me absolutely bat shit loco.

    How can I remedy this?

take it to a computer repair shop. Preferably one you know is filled with smart folk (there's a locally owned one here I take repairs to, I refuse to use the staples across the road because they are blundering fools for the most part)

What happens when you boot up? Anything? Beeps?

I'm wondering if the machine is even posting now.

This all sounds very weird, like your PC had a powerspike or something. The first error sounds like a simple hard-drive failure, and then the keyboard/mouse issue at first sounded like the USB/PS2 issue someone above mentioned.

If you are having post issues now, then one reasonable conclusion is that your mobo is cooked- it cant transfer data from the HD, and it cant process base interrupts from the inputs.

Sadly there is no cure- but you could, as someone also mentioned above, buy some POS or get a friends XP box and install your HD to it to get your data.

To start, disconnect Everything except power, and see if you get a keyboard error. If you do, plug in the keyboard and try again, mouseless. You should be able to replug your mouse on the fly and have it work.

this is my answer for everything, but if i were you, i'd download and burn an ubuntu install disc. It'll boot into an operating system tha tyou can use to access your work, and allow you to see if anything on your compy is broken.

Edit: technically, you could use almost any linux distro, but i like ubuntu.
