It is coming out a few weeks before MGS4. It is also being released during the summer with not that much advertising. That doesn't really bode well for the game.
And anyone who thinks this is "me'h" should give this a read, I think it might help with how you perceive the game. It was posted over at GameFAQs (sorry if it's already been posted).
The boards has its fair share of haters and lovers. Personally, I liked the demo as well. I don't see a problem with the graphics. I understand that it's no Uncharted, but it does excel in other areas. I think it has some of the best smoke effects I've ever seen. The jungle can look really good. Smooth as butter framerate. Most importantly, it was a lot of fun.
However, I can see where it was a turn off to others. This demo does a fairly poor job of displaying what the full game will have. This game has a very different approach to things, and is actually very critical of the standard meathead shooters that are being released, if you were paying attention. Mantel is very representative of big headed, small brained, overly macho characters from other shooters.
This is Free Radical, afterall. They even said they were going to incorporate some of the satire they were so known for in the Timesplitters series. This is part of the problem with the demo for those unaware of what Haze is supposed to be like. Mantel are supposed to have goofy one-liners, sound ignorant, etc., and the bad voice acting is all part of that. It's criticizing other shooters in that way, shooters that try to be serious but come off as goofy. Also, bodies disappear, there is no blood, etc. All intentional, as a result of the Nectar. To make the soldiers think they are playing these aforementioned cliche'd shooters.
However, that doesn't last. Once you switch sides with the Promised Hand, "the truth is exposed". Things take a more realistic, serious, and gritty turn. No longer is it the mock shooter you were playing before. Bodies remain, blood is spilled, voice acting and dialogue has become more intense, etc.
Other than increased difficulty, this is what FR meant when they said they wanted to treat the gamer like an adult. They've even proven this by showing you the Mantel side of things, showing you a game similar to Halo or Turok, or whatever. The result? Many of you are calling it a generic shooter with rediculous dialogue and acting(yes, I'm aware this contradicts my point about how fun I thought the demo was. It helps that I'm aware of what FR was trying to do, and that I like the Nectar use.).
Now you're expecting it to be one way, and then Shane switches sides and BAM! Totally different game. It'll throw you off, even if you were expecting it to a degree. In a way, this is brilliant script writing on Free Radical's part. In fact, this would be a very FR thing to do. In this way, this is a very original game, and hopefully will make others making shooters realize how rediculous the genre has become.
Hell, they even give you the choice in the multiplayer. Play Mantel if you want a <insert generic shooter here> clone with drugs that power you up and make your run n' gun style even more of a blast, you meatheaded jerk(j/k!). Or, play as the Promised hand, a group that relies more on skill and tactics who take a much more realistic approach to warfare combat.
Anyway, I know this probably will not clear anything up for some of the complainers, but I do hope that maybe I've helped some. To address the graphics issue, I would expect the final game to look better, but don't expect it to look THAT much better. Maybe some better shades and textures, as well as smoother gameplay. Nothing earth shattering, but hey. Any improvements are good, no matter how small.
Yes that doesn't clear anything up. The game is retarded through and through, Mantel or Radical. On one hand it's retarded, on the other it's whiny and a failiure when it comes to the switch meaning something.
i downloaded the demo.. and finally got to play last night.
I quit and deleted it after a few minutes... it was simply 'meh' I thought timesplitter was dumb, so it doesn't bode well for this game. Whoop dee shit, a plain vanilla FPS with a single twist (nectar)
Is the AI apparently being crap supposed to be commentary or something too?
Bioshock has a lot of social commentary in its 1950s science fiction presentation of an alternative world in which people who become to enamoured with gene-altering mutagens lose perspective on reality. Bioshock is also fun.
Yeah, the satire approach doesn't really hold up. The big shooters lately have all been pretty realistic. You can't have games like Call of Duty 4 winning "Game of the Year" and then complain that all games are created like Serious Sam or Duke Nukem.
But the story in Timesplitters was always pretty dumb, and made up for it with multiplayer. It sounds like they should've just turned this into an FPS Warhawk -- chop the single player, drop the price, make it online only and provide a downloadable purchase option. The multiplayer at least seems to be interesting, since you can play 2 sides and they're actually different.
Famitsu has a scale going from 30 to 40, which means that it's actually a 4 out of 10 for them as well.
But then again Famitsu is batshit.
This is hardly surprising though. Everyone is putting the PS3 up to a higher standard, one, because it was so overhyped with lies like OMEEEGOOOOOD NEEEEEXTAAAR GEEEEEN SEEEVEEEN PROOOCESSORS! bullshit coupled with the fact it was late to the market by a year and a half, and the second one is that Sony didn't want to shell out any real money to get the games going properly, since they were planning to sell the PS3 as a Blu-Ray device to anyone who was willing to be a retard, which backfired tremendously since nobody was actually willing to be a retard, so now games are all rare and scarce, with turds like this being the "big releases".
You make your bed, you lie in it.
I hope you die.
Edit: And since when was IGN a reputable source for anything? Ill wait for some other reviews.

While he is totally off on nearly everything, he has a point in there somewhere.
Would Haze be this hyped if it was multiplatform?
Nope.
Yeah Free Radical is a name which carries weight but not the immense mass that Haze is currently floating on.
I get the feeling that this is the next Heavenly Sword. Or Lair.
Which is annoying because PS3 has some great games that do deserve hype and yet people, and by people I mean raving slobbering forum lunatics, constantly hype these mediocre from day one games to godlike status.
I mean look at GAF, it has an official Haze launch thread in the same format and style as the GTA one or the Halo one.
It's an overhyped game at no mistake - and its fucking annoying because it tains the Playstation 3 with this kind of 'all their games are overhyped messes' when this simply isnt the case.
Every release for the PS3 apparently has to be a megaton title.

I dunno. User's opinions about IGN tend to flucutate from game to game. Take GTA IV, for example. Not a 10/10 game by far. But you'd never know it.
The narrative in Second Sight was handled very maturely and very professionally.
I totally didnt get Second Sight.
Psi Ops came out like the same day and was superior in every way. And had extremely similar mechanics.
My dream is for them to just make TS4, basically just make it huge like TS2. I think TS3 was a step back a little. Too much focus on the single player story (which was utterly superfluous)

Did Psi Ops get any better after that one annoying part with those psi beasts or whatever the fuck they were called?

Every release for the PS3 apparently has to be a megaton title.
When you're behind in "the race" and trying to justify a higher price for similar performance, each exclusive has to carry more weight. Not that the others haven't had sub-par games, the 360 certainly had it's share early on before the PS3's release. But now that the library of quality titles is larger, the 360 can sit on it's price advantage and not have to worry about exclusives to sell systems and "catch-up".
Still, a 4.5 is just awful. I'm really surprised Haze is THAT bad. Won't stop me from getting an MSG4 bundle, but certainly doesn't help the PS3's case for those still on the fence.

If people put this much scrutiny on anything I dont think there would be a thing in this universe considered successful. If haze turns out to be as bad as IGN says it is, then that is one bad game in a sea of enjoyable titles. Im not going to start a list war in this thread but just poke your head into any "Hey I just got a PS3 what games should I get thread" and look at what people are saying. Theres one up now and a new one seems to pop up every few days or so.

Like others have said, I'm shocked it's THIS bad, I was honestly expecting middling reviews, yes I know who made it, and yes I am a big fan of the company, but I never got the spark for the game, but I just didn't expect it to be so awful.
Isn't this the game that if you preorder from EB and return it in a month, then it's completely free? Or something like that, my memory is a bit foggy on the details.
I'd say warning flags should have went up then. I think they did, too.
Sort of, the promotion was reported by game-sites but it was a information fuck up or something. A few days later it corrected to "no you don't get a free game or special trade-in" or similar.

I love Free Radical's games
How could this have been so bad?

So, how well will this sell because of the hype?
All eyes on Resistance 2 and Killzone 2.
I don't care what reviews it gets, I'm buying it.

Read the review fully. Goes beyond the demo.

Librarians harbor a terrible secret. Find it.
i don't have the highest standards for FPS, as long as i get to kill things, there's a neat special ability, and it looks pretty i'll probably like it

Fuck yeah. That spin off where you're an evil ex MI6 agent doesn't count.
And we wonder why new IP is so rare.
Kotaku review.
More of the same.
Dear Free Radical : Story driven single player games are not what you do. Stick to Timesplitters.
Was thinking the exact same.
I hope you die.

Yeah it's the only game that makes me wish I had a PS3. That or it got ported to the 360.
I went out for a drink with someone at Free Radical a few days ago. Don't expect the next Timesplitters for another 3 years or so.
I know, I was upset too.

Cemented this as a buy for me.
When it hits $9.99, so I can afford copies for three of my friends for an afternoon of 4-player co-op. I loves me some co-op.

They gave Vampire Rain 30/40 (9/7/7/7) which is utter shit.
