[Definition:] Gamers

I'm really perplexed as to what is considered a gamer these days. Or a hardcore gamer as opposed to casual. I've always played video games, spare the ages 1 and 2, and maybe about 7 months when I was 18 trying to figure out my life. I like to consider myself a gamer, but then again, I only own a Wii.

Do I need to own 2 or more systems to quallify as a hardcore gamer? I spend a signifigant amount of time playing wii/portable games each week (by my consideration) usually amounting to 7 or more hours a week. Am I a gamer? Am I a HARDCORE gamer? I read all the news, reviews, anticipate titles, and trash talk crap that doesn't look good, but still I feel like the "gamer community" as a whole considers someone who has only a wii to be casual.

If I am not a hardcore gamer, than what defines such. If I'm a casual gamer, is there any grey area between the wii sports grandpa's and uber halo haxor teens?

Labels are stupid. I'm just a guy who plays games, same as you. Whether that's 40 hours of WoW a week or the odd Halo 3 match, nobody gives a shit.

Yeah, you're a hardcore gamer, if you like. Whatever. Nobody knows or cares.

I know, but people so often talk about what demographic they are targeting, like marketing to _________ gamers.

What about people who are hardcore into puzzle games, isn't brainage going after them? Why is a little girl with a collection of Nintendogs and Poniez considered less of a gamer than someone playing GTA4?

And in exec rooms. Microsoft and Sony are trying to target the "casual" gamer. Apparently Nintendo already has them tho.

Casual plays Wii, Gamers play 360, and Hardcore live by the PS3. At least thats what one would assume after reading alot of the BS fanboy rhetoric floating around the tubes the last year.

Tell that to my girlfriend. :(

Seriously though. I feel that the gaming community is one of the best communities out there... IF you filter out the fanboy bullshit. It happens in every community (fuck, look at how "hardcore" people are about Ohio State University vs Michigan State). Hardcore is a term created from the fanboys out there.

Casual is a real term. BUT it's not nearly as negative as it is made out to be. Some of us have full time jobs, go to school, and have kids to look after. So obviously time isn't something we have a lot of. But when we do have free time, we love to play video games. So if I have 8 hours a week total of free time, and all of those 8 hours is used up playing video games... Would that make me a "casual" gamer?

I'm pitching a documentary series called "Gamer" to my school next year in the hopes they let me shoot a few pilots. (About the depth and richness of Gaming sub-cultures.) (it also gives me an excuse to play video games with nerds for grades!)

I think the term as it is, defines a certain type of person who sees Games (in this case, mostly videoed games) as a valid and acceptable way of living, relaxing and socializing on a mostly daily basis. No, you don't need a certain amount of systems or games to be "hardcore" (which as said, isn't really the best label for us gamers.)

Everyone has their own level of addiction, but it's about what the act of playing the games means to you, if it's just for fun, or if you get "more out of it" than the average person.

I think calling yourself a Gamer is more of a lifestyle choice than a label.

I consider myself a "Gamer" first and foremost. before a musician, aspiring filmmaker or any of that. it's my passion 8-) I'm also luckily no longer embarrassed of that fact.

I think Hardcore is a term used by people who feel like their persona or individuality is being intruded upon by outsiders, deluting the potency of their strangeness. You get this a lot with fans of the Beatles and Tool, who like to think people who arn't actively searching for further clues of Paul McCartneys death just merely "Don't get the Beatles like I do".

I think this aspect of asserting dominance and superiority, trying to make people feel inferior is quite a shameful thing, and happens more often, accross more mediums than anyone realizes. A friend of a friend came over to my house recently and noticed I had a guitar hero guitar, he basically started talking about it until I would let him turn it on, and he proceeded to say "You're only on hard? What, do you not like the game?"

I think this is a standard in the musician community as well. A lot of people classicly trained to read music on a guitar, and have studied music theory, refuse to accept that someone who learned on tabs and listening by ear has the potential to be every inch of musician they are.

Maybe I should change the title of this thread to [complaint on]

    Rambling post ahoy.

    25ixd3b.jpg
Seriously though. I feel that the gaming community is one of the best communities out there

The gamer community makes me cry. Bias. Double standards. Anti intellectual in some regards.

    For example.

Star Soldier R. Not to drag the argument in here. But the main complaint with people is that there's no arcade mode. In the end, their arguments are justified. They want THIS type of gameplay, and not THAT, and sadly, Star Soldier R doesn't satisfy. 6/10. Fine. I can deal with that.

Grand Theft Auto 4. Basically a prettier version of the games we were sold the past five years over. 60$. I found it to be a minor update to the older titles. Still riddled with horrible AI. Inconsistent. No checkpoints. Ancient save system. God awful online matchmaking. Online mode can be a real burden sometimes. Basically, I was let down.

I'm not saying you can or can not enjoy either game. But I felt that GTA IV wasn't worth the 60 bucks I paid for it. It's a fun game, and I'll finish it. But there's so much shit in it that R* completely over looked or simply failed to bother with. I don't know where the development time and money went to. There are still major problems with the gameplay that weren't even addressed. We only got pretty graphics and a new story. Not really what qualifies as "a good game".

So, the fact that Star Soldier R suffers from similar developer oversight/laziness/whatever, it gets an arguably reasonable score.

Yet GTAIV retains problems that began with GTA III six or so years ago, yet it's heralded as "The game by which all others must be judged". That's asinine, and makes me really scared about what people find to be "quality" in a game.

I do not type this in a negative manner or am trying to incite anger in anyone.

    But it's the truth.

So I'm largely disconnected with the gamer community at large. I don't get into discussions regarding games with strangers like I did so many years ago. I'm even further removed once you consider that a majority of gamers now started playing with the PS2. There's about a decade of gaming that they missed out of, and age often is not an excuse. Ignorance (non pejorative sense) largely, but there's also that anti-intellectual bent I mentioned earlier.

Today I saw on a forum someone ask why a 2D game's screenshots "looked like one of those flash games on the internet". Facepalm.gif. He's a moderator there.

You wouldn't believe how happy I was the other day when I was "challenged" to an obscure "name off". The keyboard player for my new band decided to test his might. I figured we'd get about as obscure as Okami, but he busted out some Mars Matrix and Ikaruga references on me.

    Respect.

Anyway. I post on PA alot because there's tons of people here I do respect. I play with them online sometimes, and even if we don't have common interests (Panny has a Kris xK porn stash that she keeps forwarding to me. Yuck), we share a common bond. If we don't game together? I respect opinions.

Respect in that regard as well.

One of the coolest guys I know online now posts here. I realized I don't necessarily need a forum to get well thought opinions on games. I dunno. I guess it's still easier than communicating other ways.
Ohhh, two more posts since I was typing a reply. I suppose we can let this thread die. I kind of got what I needed to hear out of it. D:D:D:

I know I can be a giant dick sometimes, but I'd like to think I've made a name for myself here after 6+ years.

    :P :P

Anyway. TSR is a wealth of information and always makes me feel old by initiating walks down memory lane.

I play a good mix of games considered "hardcore and casual" for the most part, but I play all of them casually, because I have so little free time. What does that make me? It took me like 2 months to power through Twilight Princess. I am currently chipping away at GTA. It'll likely take me most of the summer. That's cool, though.

I'm a gamer because I play games. That's the only requirement.

I think that in this day and age, far too many people play video games for "gamer" to be useful as a label. It's like saying "the meat-eating community" or "the TV-watching community".

I really hate the terms "gamer" and "gaming", mainly because they sound fucking retarded.
Persons who 'engage in rather delightful interactive entertainment experiences' then? :P

If you want to get specific, "gamer" strikes me as a belittling term in the same way that "nerd" does.

There's also the fact that "gaming" also means "gambling", as in the Nevada Gaming Commission, which doesn't help to simplify anything.

But my main complaint is that "gamer" is just a stupid term.

Nah gaming community is awesome. If you know where to look.

That could be said about every single "community" there is. And surely a community loses its worth if you range from seven-year-olds playing Nintendogs to sixteen-year-old Halo douchebags to fifty-year-olds who got a DS for Brain Age and digital crosswords.

I have never shyed from calling myself a nerd. It's a badge of honor for me.

Speaking of which... if there was actually a badge you could wear for nerds, what would it be? A double cheeseburger with two viking swords crossed behind it? Yeah... throw in a gamepad at the bottom and a wreath of stinklines surrounding the whole thing. I would get that tattooed on my face. Somebody photoshop this up.
