So I created my first Male Cleric, Skull, Female Fighter, and Female Monk just now. I set them on Honor Student Club (10% XP from whomever sits next to them), sat them next to Mao, and did 1 run through 7-3R.
They're now level 45 and I unlocked 3 PAGES worth of new classes.
Rank 4 Martial Artists are the first class that gets Big Bang, and that's one of the only melee 3x3 attacks. Which means ultimately I'll be transferring that to Mao et all and leveling up a fist weapon, I guess.
well you dont have to level up weapons any more...
So here's a question, don't know if anyone has tried it...
If you use the club that gives 50% of Mana to other members or whatever (Robber's Shop?) and you go into the class world, do the other characters get 50% of the Mana you earn through destroying the blocks and residents and stuff?

Yeah you do, leveling up items in Item World is the only way to get strong enough for the big post game stuff.
Mao is now level 400-someodd, Once I get Raspberyl and her 2 cronies up to level 100 by trickle-down I'm lowering the monster difficulty back to normal and beating the game.
My friend has a weird stat issue we were wondering about:
He has an armor and a ring he wants to equip on a character that are both Rarity 24. The ring he is equipping has 33 ATK, while the previous item has 0 on it, yet it says his ATK will go down by 121 if he equips it. Aren't 2 items of the same rarity supposed to boost all your stats?
PS: A club like the Robber Shop that gives 50% mana works for all members in the club, not just the leader, right?

Finally got to the first good power leveling map, 7-3, and am subsequently powering up my army.
It's sort of amazing how quickly the characters level through the 10% bonus given by being in the Honor Students club. I'm zooming my female martial artist through her reincarnations unlocking the different tiers just by the passive EXP gain from powerleveling Mao, and moving all my characters onto the map whenever there is an EXP+ on the first slot of the bonus gauge.
Maybe I'm just retarded, but did they take away the ability to learn skills from other characters? I know a leader of a club can use the skill if their standing next to a person in their club, but unlike the previous games the skill doesn't actually stick. Is there a way short of reincarnating to learn skills that the class usually can't?
Also for the clubs that have an ability of X gained by students seated nearby, is the nearby just the 4 seats that the person is close friends with or something else?

Class World. When you enter the Class World, one of the options is to inherit the skills of someone else in the same club as you. It generally costs 10x the normal mana cost to learn the skill, but you can reduce it by destroying all the geo blocks on every level. (Note: The Mystery Gate on level 9 of the class world is where you go to achieve whatever effect you chose when you entered the class world)

Yeah you do, leveling up items in Item World is the only way to get strong enough for the big post game stuff.
ah, i thought you were referring to the weapon proficiencies you had to level up in previous games for whatever reason. reading comprehension is go!
yea the item world is obviously still in full effect.
The previous games weren't this bad (good?) about it though.
I mean, Disgaea 1 had the "What the, Level 4000, OH COME ON!" moment when Laharl met Baal, but that was about it.
Disgaea 3 is openly talking about the character's titles, complaining about characters showing up in the last chapter and being useless, and pointing out that the lady giving exposition is really helpful for people who've never played a Disgaea game before. It's great.
well i now that 7-3 is open to me to run through repeatedly, I seem to really be getting places. My mages are all over level 100, and already reincarnated. I've also reincarnated a couple other fighters and gotten them close to 100. I just want to unlock the top tiers for all characters and then get down to some serious grinding!!!

I really like that each tier is actually a worthwhile stepping point in this game. You don't feel like you have to just grind & grind a crappy character to really get any benefit from reincarnating.
I'm also really liking how the weapons & characters are much more balanced. It's not just two characters & story characters until you unlock an uber-character, but they each have good stats. And the weapon thing has been great -- actually gives you a reason to mix it up and have some characters using different weapons, instead of everyone using swords.

I agree completely, except I never used story characters. It seemed like it was always sword users and mages of some sort. Even in D1, I had kept rolling my mages up, and then turned them into thieves. It was a nice way to have a leveled in the thousands "thief" that could blast OMEGA spells and steal shit.
This game so far is much more balanced.

Man Thieves are actually pretty awesome in this one. Give 'em a gun and let their high Hit/Speed do its thing. My Thief was my highest level character for some time.
Also, I gave (chapter 5?... are we spoiling characters?)
the Princess
an Axe. For some reason this amuses me.
Spent last night unlocking all the classes that I could, made it to Chapter 6... I think? Then I reincarnated everyone who had a box for a desk because it was annoying me. I now have like 25 level 1 characters.

Since Guns are now Hit/Speed, Thieves actually kinda rock. I put their bonus points into Hit and let them go to town.
I beat the game last night. Not a bad ending. This is the first Disgaea game to lampshade the side-quest / post-game stuff so well, too. I need to figure out how the hell to get past Ordeals 3 (that would be the one with Enemy turbo x3, Magic Range +5 Geomasters in a huge tower with 1 new level 300 slime being generated each turn) so I can start powerleveling in MoO 4...
There's something very important to know about the postgame in this.
Reincarnating non storyline characters uses a logorithmic price increase. Something like 100-200-400-800-1600-3200-6400 or whatnot. Very rapidly you'll hit the 999,999,999 cost cap, meaning suddenly you can't do anything but good-for-nothings.
In other words, expect to delete and recreate your generics once you hit tier 6 and can make genius tier 6s.
Which is barely really a limit at that point anyway.
And that still requires an astounding 15 reincarnations to hit.
Assuming you reincarnate a character 5 times to unlock each class tier... dot dot dot...
Then level them up enough so that over those 15 (10?) reincarnations left you save up the 185,000 stored levels... and make sure to go into the class world as often as you can to get their affinities up and learn any missing skills...
I guess what I'm saying is outside of story characters, it's best not to go willy nilly with reincarnations.

I've just been rolling my characters up to the next class once they get enough mana for the 2nd to last tier. This makes them useful as hell and easy to level up.
I figured once I get DEEP into postgame (i'm at 7-3 in story, and just using the item world to level for now) then I can roll max characters for everything and start fresh if ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Um, you don't need to level in item world. Beat 7-3, when you go back in...
It's just like Cave of Ordeals 3 in the original game. 3x3 block of high XP Mushrooms that die to a stiff breeze.
Only problem is, very few 3x3 attacks in this game. I just used 2 casts of Mao's Cross-shaped 3rd attack.
I was using the item world to level because I hadn't gotten a solid 3x3 spell / attack yet.
So, just got done for the day and here is my main character:
Cardinal (5th Tier Cleric)
All the Fire Spells (Mega Fire is level 8 - 3x3 attack)
All the Star Spells (Mega Star is level 8 - 3x3 attack)
All the Heal / Support Spells
Approximately 1800'ish stored levels
When I rerolled her to Cardinal, I put her in the Honor Club w/ two other 150'ish level mages. After one clearing of 7-3 she was like 80'ish. She then proceeded to solo 7-3 (with 4 tougher enemy bills passed - each shroom at level 99) on her own while being in the corner group club. After a couple maps, she unlocked the final tier, and is now sharing mana / exp through clubs with my lower level guys.
The beauty of this character is that she gets SOOOO much mana / experience that she has made probably 70% of my characters (every class unlocked now) as a genius! So now every character is starting out with great stats!!!
Well, I was just pretty excited about all that, so I wanted to share.

It's cool, there's always next year. During which I'll probably do nothing but hang out and play fighting games all weekend. :P
I noticed the Diez Gentlemen are called the "Juushishi" in the Japanese dialogue -- anyone know what that translates to? My dictionary I use comes up with nothing. I suppose it could be "Juushinshi" as well -- I think I hear a soft N in there.

Ahh.... see I was wondering what that 10 Gents stuff meant in the interludes. I admit Shinshi was the 1 breakdown I didn't try in the dictionary. I figured it was like Juushin-shi.
So I did a couple class world runs to get "big bang" onto some of my fist users. If you clear out the geo panels on the floors, the price goes down TREMENDOUSLY. The first time I did it, I only cleared like 2 floors, and it cost me about 41800 mana for big bang. The next time I did it, I cleared about 8 / 10 floors worth of geo panels, and big bang cost me like 12000 mana.
A few random thoughts:
1. This game is awesome
2. Fuck House of Ordeals 3 (or whatever it's called). This fucking took me forever......
3. But now that I'm on HOO4, it's smooth fucking sailing from here on out!

I think the guide says the for each floor you clear the price goes down 5% (up to 45%).
And since 'Diez' means '10' in Spanish, it all comes together!
So how much fun did you have trying to clean up the English for all of Mr. Champloo's lines, Houk? ;p
PS: If he really did reduce it from like 44k to 12k then that seems like a lot more than a 50% reduction...

Hey folks. So I bought this game yesterday, partially due to wanting to jump into a deep, complex game, and partially due to lurking in this thread a bit and seeing the craziness and enjoyment which you guys have for it.
Now, here's the rub: I've never played any of the other Disgaea games. Most of the reviews I read mentioned that it's not a bad one to jump into as a first timer, but I can't help feel I've got no real idea as to what's going on, big picture-wise. I've had a little experience with games like FFT and FFTA, but that's about it. I get the basic mechanics involved, but I feel like I'm way over my head with most the more complex stuff (like those goddamn geo-blocks and squares!). I've done all the tutorials, but I'm finding it hard to apply to the more random bits, like the item world levels.
So, smarties, any general or specific tips/hints/suggestions for a total newcomer to this batshit-insane world?
For what it's worth, I've just finished 2-1 and done my first item world run on a Delta Blade. The first 7 levels weren't to bad, but I had to dash to the exit on 8-10 as my meager force was rapidly falling apart.
Anyway, thanks to anyone who can get me on the right direction.
well for starters, i would recommend not worrying too much about the item world at the start unless you get to a point in the story where you absolutely have to power-level. Being at 2-1 I don't think you need to worry about that stuff too much - just play through the story and get used to the mechanics slowly.

The lack of the fourth wall in this is also pretty funny.
I feel that Disgaea walks in, whistling a jaunty tune, and then just starts smashing he fourth wall with a sledgehammer. While continually whistling.
