    I second Houks remarks.

For someone new to the franchise, here are some ideas I think might be helpful to a new person to this series:

    - Don't worry about any of the "add-ons" til you finish the regular game. There's no "need" to do anything outside of the story until your 2nd playthrough. The reason I say this, is because you might become sidetracked and never get back into the story (it's happened to me)

    - Don't worry about screwing up a character with stats, skills, etc. This game actually allows you to boost up anything and everything. Unless you are going for "perfect" damage like the book, just play around. This game actually allows you to have one character experiment with so many different weapons / skills / etc since they are not tied to the weapon (meaning you can change skills etc)

    - Look up some of the FAQ's for disgaea2. I know this game is vastly different, but since there are no FAQ's for this one yet (that I know of), you can at least get an understanding of the mechanics there.

    Good Luck & Enjoy!!!

Hey guys, gameplay wise, would you guys go back to disgaea 1 after playing this?

Only I never get to play disgaea 1 because my gf hogs it and I'm too amazed that she loves a game this much to demand some time with it, so I'm thinking if I get 3, then I can say hey wanna swap?

But am I going to want to, or are we just gonna evolve to working out who gets to play 3, is what I'm asking?

I remember that the ninjas were impossibly good in the original. But the reincarnation craze didn't really become a major tactic in Nippon Ichi's games until Makai Kingdom.

I guess I could say more that a turnoff with the D3 system to me is its very hard to teach spells between characters, and coupled with the exponential mana cost for reincarnating generic characters, makes it worse than D2 imho.

It was fairly easy to get your counters and movement upgraded in the original D1. In D3 you basically have to wait until the post-game to work on any of that due to mana costs. I find the color chain + color block system complicates things to have both. It's not bad for someone thats played games before, but it must be overwhelming to new players.

I don't think mana is an issue at all, except at REALLY high levels of spells / skills. With mana sharing, and outright STEALING, a lower level character can have 10,000+ mana in no time (if you have unlocked 7-3 or HoO4).

All in all, D3 would make it hard to go back to D1 or D2 imho.

Disgaea 1 is especially hard to play because the only way you get levels is via deathblows, and there's no tower attacks or anything to help along.

Leveling healers is such a pain in Disgaea 1.

Honestly, as far as I'm concerned the only reason to play Disgaea 1 is for the story. They improved the gameplay a hell of a lot for Disgaea 2, and they've changed it up quite a bit for Disgaea 3, so I'd probably have to force myself to get used to sub-par (IMO) systems if I played Disgaea 1 again.

But as you said you have to get to post-game before mana is easy. What do you mean mana stealing btw? And Healers are back to being hard to level in D3 bc they have to mooch Club XP only and so fucking hard to get them dmg spells until you unlock Prism mage to cross-reincarnate them.

I like a lot of the improvements in D3, but there are still a few things that are really annoying to me.

But D2 was even easier to level healers since you could just use Tutor/Pupil to teach them all the elemental magic right away. In D3 you would have to waste reincarnations going through all of the color mages + the exponential mana cost to keep doing that.

... neither do I have a PS3, which makes Disgaea 3 a nonconcern as well. Perhaps it's for the best - the last three N1 games I've purchased I've not finished after playing at least halfway through.

For the main game you can just, you know, heal. Healers do gain experience doing that, I have had no trouble keeping my healer at a similar level to the rest of my generics (Mao and Almaz have pulled ahead though). And with the mana sharing club, which is the easiest and cheapest club to get if I remember right, mana is a non-issue.

7-3 replay. They start at level 50. 5 or 6 Stronger Enemy bills, and they're level 200. They are in a 3x3 block and do not move unless they are damaged but not killed. I personally use Mao's weird checkerboard 3rd Unique twice, then the new X-slash to kill them all instantly over 3 turns (with 1 turn wasted moving towards them).

Other then completionist reasons, and unlocking the VERY cool different evilities, not really. I did it up to level 4 for all classes, now I'm just letting everyone fend for themselves.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm having fun with this game for sure - certainly one of the strangest games I've played in a long time. The combat is addictive and I can see why people love this game for its depth.

Anyway, here's a question: Some of my squad's weapons and armor show up with colored titles (I've seen green and gold so far) with little icons next to them that kind of look like weird crowns or something. I couldn't find any explanation in the game or the manual.

    green are rare
    gold are legendary

rare items have boosts to stats, and you can go to level 50 in the item world
legendary items have GREATER boosts to stats, and you can go to level 100 in the item world

also, they can hold more specialists

Yeah, I did. It takes a while, but you just go to the typical grind spots and level up Laharl or a similarly-powered fighter. The key is to not skip on your item levels -- having a lv 100 high rank sword turns enemies into butter.

And the trick to doing 100 levels in the item world is to be able to skip every level via throwing/movement. Otherwise it takes too damn long.

It took me a long time to beat Priere and the other end-game stuff, mostly because I didn't really dick around with power leveling until I beat the game once, and spent more time just enjoying the game than purposefully abusing things. Once you can unlock her, though, it's a pretty short time to beating her. I beat her by having a few crappy sacrifices towards the starting point, so she wouldn't beat on laharl while I beat on her.

    According to the wiki:
Prier appears as a hidden boss in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. In Disgaea, Prier (translated as Priere) is the Overlord of an Alternate Netherworld, an allusion to the hidden "ending" in La Pucelle where Prier ends up accidentally becoming a Demon Overlord if she gets too strong fighting in the Dark World. Fighting through the Alternate Netherworld and defeating Prier in battle makes her join the player's army. She appears again in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories as a hidden boss where she, still a demon, faces the main characters Adell and Rozalin. In the first, she has no speaking role. Her voice is only heard during combat. In the second one, she has two speaking (without a voice actor) roles, but no combat voice.
