Has anyone else played the DS port? It seems really sloppy, for the few minutes I played of it. Even though you can zoom to three different levels, the sprites still look terrible no matter what. The default cursor option is that it moves diagonally instead of the free movement of the other versions - wonder if there's an option to fix that. It's kinda sluggish too, mostly noticeably when you scroll the screen, although at least the game doesn't slow down during actions like FFT PSP did.
The resolution is also just way too low, the screen gets cluttered too easily. Sometimes it's impossible to see what you're targetting unless you look at the top screen. The view when you're walking around the castle is so zoomed in you could cut yourself on Laharl's jagged pixels. The background textures aren't much better.
I like that there's still voice acting, but the music is awful. I'm guessing the Etna chapter is gone? Weren't Adell and co. in the PSP port too? I know there's some kind new Geo system I haven't gotten to yet, so I'm not sure how that works.
Anyway, yeah, seems like a pretty subpar port. Playable, I guess, but really redundant in light of the PSP version.

Is the music in English or Japanese?
I think he was referring to Disgaea, not Rhapsody.
OH DOH. Yeah, I'm referring to Disgaea, the DS version came out last week in Japan. All voices are in Japanese, obviously. I'd imagine they'd have to pick one for the localized version, since I doubt the DS cart could fit both.
I haven't read the whole thread, but did anyone mention the battle system in the DS version is Rhapsody is different from the PSOne version? It looks like it ditches the tactics-style encounter in favor of the usual "line up on one side", the same used in Little Princess/etc. Probably for the better, actually, all of the movement grid stuffed slowed down the original game, and it was just way too much considering how easy the game is.

I would've gotten Rhapsody on day 1 if it was a complete unchanged port. Knowing it's a remake is even better.
Hearing how awful Disgaea DS is sounding makes me wish Rhapsody had gotten the PSP treatment(which I think would fit much better), but I'll take what I can get.

There is a vid on youtube of someone running it on a emu, apart from the problems that was casuing (black blocks on loading) the game looked ok to me...
this will serve as a general purpose enough thread to post this in
just saw that the jap/hk stores have DLC up for Disgaea 3. i dont know if its news or just news to me heh. three separate items, each adding a character to the game. Adell, Rosalyn, and someone named Felyn (i think) that i didnt recognize. the Adell and Ros ones were about $1.25 each, the other one was under a buck. also theres a special thing you get access to downloading if you buy all three. kind of neat. they each come with their own missions and stuff to do.
Dear God, am I seriously considering buying a PS3 for this one game?
What the hell is wrong with me?
there are some other pretty cool games too, i heard
I literally bought a ps3 for the promise of tekken 6 in the future, and bought a japanese one just to make sure there'd be no problems with playing the first version of any tekkens that would ever come out.
Seeing as most people consider tekken to be the shittiest fighting game on the planet, I'm making your "consideration" look pretty damn sensible right now.

I'm really loving disgaea on psp at the moment. It's insanely addictive and to be honest other than some unfulfilling experiences with ffta 1 it's my first turn based strategy rpg.
Anybody here who played the japanese version of disgaea 1 or 2, any chance you think of item names and menus being in english text (or at least katakana) and not kanji in disgaea 3?
Also I'm not really up to speed on all things disgaea, but is the version of 3 coming out in august the english version or the japanese version?

Rhapsody? So I get to play it again? Bought, so bought bought bought.
Man, that randomness thing is... an unusual choice. I wonder if they just couldn't get enough copies of the 3 things and were like "Well, lets just shuffle, eh?"
I really need to go pick up a Playstation 3 in the next few weeks....
Kinda considering buying Disgaea 3 and then getting a PS3 sometime in the future...
My brain tells me this is a stupid thing to do, while my heart.... Damn you heart.
And the digitial media disk and art book sound nifty in the last package deal, but that whole random stuff doesn't sound so hot to me. I mean, paying that much and then getting some flag that I couldn't care less about doesn't really seem fun.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and I was excited about PSP Rhapsody until the news about it being Japanese dub only. While with most games while this would've made me sad, I could easily live with it. However, with Rhapsody..... eh, as others said, musicals just don't work as well (for me) subtitled.
So yeah, I'm gonna pass.
If they ever decide to release the game on PSP and make it duel audio though, I'll definitely pick it up.

Perhaps I'm too tired at the moment, but following this discussion has been a tad confusing. May I ask nicely for a concise OP update?

Randomness of the final package sucks balls. I want that artbook. Grrr.
If I start playing disgaea 2 without having finished 1 yet (hard to prise the psp out of the gf's hands atm) will I spoil much for myself in terms of 1's story? I plan to just do item worlds instead of playing through the story, because I want me some goddam strategy dagnabbit, so my story progress will be fairly slow.

There's almost no connection at all between Disgaea 1 and 2 storywise, aside from the cameos.
Well, it does sort of spoil what happens to one of the returning characters, but it's nothing major.
And I like 2's story, even though most didn't for some reason.

I recommend waiting for someone you know well to purchase one, and then come over all the time. Thats my plan.
This is not a very good recommendation, I realize.
What'd you do to get them so angry? :P
At least I can play AT2 at launch. Tempting, but I'm not getting a PS3 just for Disgaea.
I do believe I'll be importing a couple of DS games come september.
Although I did not get to work on D3 anyway, which deeply saddens me.
Do want.
