im just wondering. ive been doing personal case mods for about 5 years now, with little to no research other than my own interests. Could these be considered art? or am i just a tool with a dremel and a bunch of cables

the first case mod i did. was stolen from my house

The etching i did by hand in the side of the case. theres about 8 hours there.

The 2nd case mod i attempted. i wasn't very happy with the overall look, but it did its job

Ive had some practice since my first one

aforementioned practice.

A prize i did for a local lan party. won by some speechless kid, who next year, proudly displayed it in his computer case, as per my enclosed instructions
so, denizens of penny arcade, please reply with comments, criticism, and answer my question
is this art?

I'd say that's definitely art, no question about it.

By that I mean, if you're just a random tool cutting out a window, then no. If you actually try and be creative with it, then it's as artistic as any other art created by changing and manipulating an already-existing object.
猿も木から落ちる
Fixed. Booze is its own justification.
Like DigDug said: You can call anything art, and it's art. If a chimp can dip its ass in paint and rub it on paper and it sells for fifty grand, this would definitely be art.
Will it end up in a museum in 100 years? Probably not, but the same is true of most of the paintings and sculptures of past centuries. I can see some nerds in the late 2000's or early 2100's collecting antique case mods.
Edit: If I were one of those nerds, the Metroid one would definitely be in my collection.
im just putting the finishing touches on my latest masterpiece. i should be finished for tomorrow, in time for lanageddon. its far less vegas-y then my last few

far more evil
and full of chaos
Except that Halo is on PC as well, and Microsoft is all bout-it bout-it when it comes to Windows.
He could always put that pane on a Linux box. Some sort of artistic statement, really.
I never asked for this!
Hell yes they're art.

Hand painted, hand cut, etc etc.
I would think of it this way: The etchings are art, the case is the presentation. Some artists make very elaborate displays to set their art onto during their art shows, they themselves may not consider the display to be a work of art.
And who cares if it fits some technical definition of 'art' or not? They're awesome, that's what matters.

@Rem - The Mario case is delicious!
I consider anything visually interesting to be art. There are even a few water bottles that I find to be artistic.
Honestly I like those square Fiji water bottles...
Halo is almost acceptable since it at least got a shitty port, but I'm wondering why the hell you would put Zelda or Samus on PC case. It's just so very wrong.
Dude needs to etch Gordon Freeman on a case, or a Hydralisk or something.
or the wizard of frobozz or guybrush threepwood
i'd swap the apple jewel for an overlord.
but then I'd have to have an apple product, which is unacceptable.

Once a nintendo fanboy, always a nintendo fanboy.
plus, i dont like starcraft, i will not etch warcraft, and team fortress didnt fit with what i wanted to do.
i usually dont show half finished work, but if it makes you happy...
I never asked for this!
Edit: As for art classification, What youve been doing definitely counts I would say with the look of the etchings on the windows. Some are just crap though with shitty paint jobs and too many lights. So Id say its definitely not black and white but (hur hur) in the eye of the beholder.
what u want etched, mirrored (so the etching is on the inside, but faces outward)
???
Profit!
its really not that hard. give it a go!
Also you seem to be affiliated with PP confirm/deny?
You don't really have to have any artistic talent, you could just print out the picture you want (mirrored, like he said) and set it under the plexiglas and trace it with the dremel.
edit: Scarab, that's an awesome computer case.
ive seen an old pizzabox (double tall from pizza 73) at a lan party. kept offering people slices
This might be right up your alley. Ada's a good friend of mine, she's made slashdot a few times and even been interviewed by the New York times.
