I used to think Engi was the bees knees but after a couple weeks noticed that, overall, I had a blast with the medic who at first I didn't think was much at all. I tend to avoid going medic now though since there are so many others playing him at the moment and go engi, spy, or pyro. Mostly because I tend to suck with aiming.
I used to play Pyro almost every single time. That was when I had an old computer and my framerate was so low my shots would not always register. With my new rig now, I find myself playing mostly sniper and soldier. I still enjoy playing pyro a lot, but I do only when I can't get any kills and just feel the need to burn as many people as physically possible.
I enjoy playing pyro but the damage (i.e., hit registry) is really inconsistent for me. I make a bad scout for similar reasons... I hate playing classes where other people regularly total me in a single second up close but I can never replicate such feats.
PL_BLACKMESA'S NEXT ALPHA WILL BE SOON AND MUCH MORE AWESOME ONLY POSSIBLY A LITTLE LESS SO SINCE I HAD TO TAKE OUT THE BEGINNING 'ROLL INTO PLACE' PART BECAUSE I REALIZED IT'S A BAD IDEA FROM A DESIGN STANDPOINT AND DAMN THIS IS LONG BUT YEAH I GOTTA FIGURE OUT WHAT THE WHOLE TOO MANY CAPTURES PROBLEM IS BEFORE I RE-RELEASE HOT DAMN THIS IS A RUN-ON
What exactly was wrong with the cart rolling into place?
I thought it was cool.
As cool as it is, there is only ONE track for all three stages, and one cart. Since the cart doesn't actually start out parented to the actual cart, it would be VERY tricky to get the cart from its starting point to each subsequent stage. I'm going to put something cool in to compensate, though, so don't worry too much.
Probably some kind of driver problem. There should be something on the blue screen that can help you slightly, be it telling you if it's a graphics driver, sound driver, or what.
Are any classes particularly good for newbies? Newbies with poor aim and a weak sense of direction? I haven't played a lot of FPS stuff in the past, but I thought I might make a project of getting OK a TF2 this summer, since for various reasons I'll have more free time than expected.

Medic and Engineer are pretty good for what you're describing. I usually go engy whenever I'm tired of shooting mans.
edit: If you're trying to learn how to shoot mans though, I would suggest soldier as the rockets are slow and if you can get your shots accurate with that class, you're pretty much good to go with the others.
I'd actually recommend learning the finer points of being a heavy instead of trying soldier as a newbie. Especially if you're not quick, demo and soldier are pretty much all leading, heavy is hitscan.
Edit: this is after learning the ropes as medic and engineer.
#1 rule for medic, DON'T ZONE OUT AND STAND STILL.
I'd suggest trying out pubs for a few rounds. I didn't really improve until I was able to slaughter the general populace. Lots of people on tha PA servers have been playing on and off for months now and don't exactly make it easy to improve one's aim.
Heavy has the problem of being total cannon fodder if you don't know what you're doing though. Poor range and the minigun's warm-up time coupled with the Heavy's slow waddle means there's going to be a lot of Sniper bullets, knives, and critical explosives forcing you to go through the long trek back to the front lines. Rockets have such a large blast radius that it'll only take five minutes to get good enough at aiming to start consistently hitting targets, and the Soldier is much better at defending himself against an enemy that takes him by surprise, which is certainly going to happen a lot until the map feels comfortable.
Okay, for some reason, the progress indicator in Gold Rush keeps disappearing for me. The one that tells you the status of the cart. It only happens on that map. It comes back when a new round starts.
Is there some button I'm hitting that toggles it, or is it a weird bug?
this may have been covered, but does anyone else notice that the vamp gun completely destroys the pyros game against a medic?
I believe it was covered roughly 3.4 seconds after the first Medic got the vamp gun.
Which is to say, screw that stupid gun.
So, besides my fps dropping like a stone and my internet crapping out repeatedly, I noticed something odd today. It seems last time I played I smashed my old Pyro points record by 9 points, bringing it from my second lowest score to my highest. And I can't figure out how, unless Valve secretly implemented that "points for setting enemies on fire" thing.

Only if you can aim it and nobody else is nearby, otherwise you get Asiina Wannabe #124 down to a sliver of health and then someone gibs you one foot away from the health.
So, I think my graphics card was overheating or something during Goldrush. Was really trippy, all the buildings and characters were flickering. I usually go through hours of "OS Paged Pool Memory Low" warning until I finally crash though.
Hey guys, I heard something was up on my server. I turned alltalk back on for you since you asked for it, also I've set the gravity to low and all the maps are upside down.
Sorry it took so long.
You're fortunate I listen to you though.

Medic is totally a horrible choice to get used to the game with.
Games usually come down to the skill of medics and delivery of ubers/krubers. Unless your team is hurting for medics, I suggest you leave it up to the pro's. You'll have an easier time figuring out what is going on as a pyro or another more straightforward class.
It's easy to argue you don't need sharp aim to be a medic, but let's see you pick out the burning scout running in circles in the middle of your group. Less about aiming however, more about prioritizing.
I think the idea is more that someone who's new to the game can be halfway useful to his team while still having the chance to observe the general dynamic of TF2 gameplay. Nobody's suggesting that Medic's an easy class to play well, only that it's easier to not be a complete waste of a player slot.

Neither the whole of truth nor the whole of good is revealed to any single observer, although each observer gains a partial superiority of insight from the peculiar position in which he stands. It is enough to ask of each of us that he should be faithful to his own opportunities and make the most of his own blessings, without presuming to regulate the rest of the vast field.

i'd agree with you on this, it's not so much that the medic is a difficult class to play, it's pretty damn easy, but it requires knowledge of the game to make decisions..

But wouldn't it be nice if we got each level in between?
We'd have 10 of each individual weapon and everything would be amazing.
I'm not the one who can't tell the difference between a flamethrower and a shotgun.

Of course I tend to play most classes like pyro which is why I die so damned much.

But so rare! I've prolly gotten more fist kills than shovel kills.
What is going on?

I guess what I'm saying is... Jon! Can you turn alltalk off on your server?

When was the last time we all jammed on HonC, anyway?
Next to demoman.
Engineer is the baddest of asses. His "negative" voice commands are the best things ever.

Especially if your team gets fucking owned for the whole game. sigh.
