How does the "weapon on fire" bonus work?

Sometimes after I counterattack (or just block?), I get an additional +1 to my "attack" stat in green afterwards, and this has stacked as high as +6. Afterwards, your weapon gets a little fire on it, gabe's fists, tycho's gun barrel, your rake.

What's the rule for these bonuses? How exactly do you get then, how long do they last, or when are they taken away?

I haven't confirmed it, but I believe you get the Hits bonus for making three attacks on the enemy with that character with no hits in between. The bonus will last until you get hit. If you counter or block during an attack then you won't lose the Hits number. I've maxed Tycho's before, something like 35 or so. It can be hard to get, especially against the later guys.

It's the overkill bonus. You get it by killing enemies with a perfectly-executed special attack. It's a permanent bonus.

Nope the guy above you is correct, the fire on the weapon thing is NOT the overkill bonus but a temporary bonus you get from attacking and NOT taking damage.

I had my party at +35 through most of the game, until I hit the last part, had trouble dodging some of the later attacks.

It's not a matter of not taking damage, though, because you still take small damage when you block. Rather, it goes up one for each hit you make, and you lose them all if you miss or only partial-block an attack on you.
