That's possibly the most preachy and least funny PA comic ever.
I personally find it to be one of the comics that consistently make me laugh, and you will see me arguing for free software (as in ideas), it just gets stupid when you start arguing the free as in beer side.
Don't watch these if you want to enjoy portal and haven't played yet.
Dude that's such an awesome point. Portal definitely had no content whatsoever, has indicated by that speedrun by someone who had obviously been through it once before. Lets see if I can find some other games whose value should be discarded:
Myst in 3:18
Man, the best selling game of all time until the Sims, and I bet it was more than $20 at release. But any game that can be beaten in 3:18 probably blows goats. What else is there?
Super Mario 3 in 11 min
Shit I was a tad young but I think that was $30 or $40 in 1990ish American dollars at the time of its release. I'm not looking up numbers but I guarantee in 2008 dollars it's a bigger number.
The fact you can FRAPS a video of a game being blown through in ridiculous amounts of time does not make it a worse game.
$20 is definitely the max price I'd pay for PA episodes, and I would like more content or a lower price, but it's not a dealbreaker if they keep it at $20.
I'm with Kag on this.
For all the laughs (or smirks) I got wih this title, as well as the various fun battles (the combat system is great) I think a $20 price tag is very reasonable.
A lot of folk don't enjoy Penny Arcade enough that they would agree, but fuck them.
Sigh, THAT is the $20 problem. (For the record, I purchased Episode 1 on XBLA and I will purchase the rest of the episodes, EVEN if they are $20.)
The whole point of this thread is that there are people, not me, out there that have different standards for value. It is my belief they priced themselves out of making this method of game development viable. Unless, us fans decide to buy the game multiple times, in 'my' opinion they shot themselves in the foot. I HOPE they make a profit out of this venture, because I would enjoy more things like RSPoD. That's the "problem"
How many people are just reading the title and my, horrendously long-winded and flip-floppy, post? For those people please understand a few things:
1.) I like PA and will support them
2.) Other people don't know who or what PA is or does and the $20 may detract them from investing into PA.
3.) Some people just hate PA and wouldn't buy it regardless.
I apologize for having a terrible understanding of English grammar and it's uses. Sometimes I am vague and sometimes I try to play devil's advocate. Please look back at lists 1-3 to understand my agenda.
So I've read through this thread and I'd like to say something:
Holy hell people! Take it easy! We're not trying to decide the leader of the whole goddamn world here. We're discussing a price tag on a game. It's not that serious. Calm the fuck down.
$20 dollars. Worth it? Depends. I'm a rabid fan girl. I threatened to strangle my boyfriend to death with his murdered dog's intestines when he said I might have to wait a day or two to bring my X box over and use his connection to download the game. I'd have paid 40 for it, whilst foaming at the mouth.
But like I said. I'm a crazed fan girl. Some people are casual fan's, some people have different standards by which they judge a game, some people lost portions of thier brains in car accidents. You really can't tell anyone they're wrong in this sort of discussion. As it stands, PA has plently of nut cases like me who will be more than happy to continue buying product. I'm sure they also have a decent amount of casual fans who tried out the game end enjoyed the fact that it does so happen to be a quality piece of work and will likely purchase again. With that alone, I'm sure they will stand to do just fine.
Besides....I mean they're not assholes. I'm pretty sure they already thought about all this (or they paid someone to think about all this...we all know Mike and Jerry don't really handle the buisness side of stuff so well =P). It'll be cool. Really.
Man I am considering buying this again so I can have it on my steam list.
Curious if I can import my save from the greenhouse version to use on the steam versions. (assuming of course that the rest of the series goes up on steam also, which it should)
I really hate to be thinking like this, but it just feels so right.

I knew I should have waited for a Steam deal. I certainly don't regret paying $20, but I beat the game from start to finish in 5 hours and I think a little bit more content or a bit of a cheaper price would be optimal.

I bought the game, played it, finished it, felt i got my money worth.
$20 (or £10 over here in the UK) seems more than reasonable to me, it's a short but fun title, i think what i enjoyed the most was the combat system. My only complaint is that i felt some of the levels seemed a little small, or perhaps i just didn't like how they were designed, maybe it would be too far a step backwards for most people these days, but i always liked the style of FF7's level design, the lush painted backdrop the characters ran around was fucking great.
But yeah, $20 (£10) was fine for me this time round, and $20 will be fine again for the next episode.
This game isn't worth 20 dollars in my opinion. I feel really put out that I paid that much for what I got.
3 weapon upgrades, 3 "abilities" per character (they're really just upgrades of the same thing), a time delay system and timed blocking?
Not bad I suppose. I like the battle system, but the things along the way are just not cutting it.
I like the way you use abilities. That's fucking great. No complaints there, but there's no armor upgrades, no weapon selection. Nothing to collect or look for. Yeah there's the gears, but you know where to get them immediately. You just need to look for shaking containers, or collect as you go.
All the quests are kill related/fetch quests. I did this in other games. I know it's a tough thing to diversify, but if anyone could do it, it should be these guys. This is a single player game in a brand new universe. Come up with some variety. Give me a GOOD reason to do things. Not because some guy told me to, or because I have to chase a big robot for some reason.
The story is very sluggish. You spend all your time running around doing boring tasks. Tycho and Anne Claire babble on about inane shit so much. I understand that they talk to each other using big words and extended verbosity. I get it, you are both intelligent people. I found myself skipping through all their dialogue because I didn't want to read that constantly!
The game practically WALKS you through exactly what to do. There is no guess work. Go here. Get that thing. Bring it to Anne. Not enough parts? Too bad, next time. Oh I have to go here now? Okay.
This guy wants a large gear. Go get it. No he wants a mini ferris wheel, go get that.
The fortune teller leaves you with a bit of a mystery, but when you walk around and see that there's a bunch of new fights, the solution is obvious.
I am very disappointed about how the game turned out, except for the encounters. Everything you fight was fucking great. The animations, the ability names and execution. The overkills, the clowns dying animation. It's ALL fucking excellent, and it really makes me wonder how one aspect of the game can be so wonderful and the rest such a let down.
Exactly how much input did Jerry and Mike have? I hope to god it wasn't a lot if this is how the game turned out.
Maybe I'm just an RPG guy and I expect more. They've played and made comics about the flaws in these games before, they know what's going on, so why the subpar (and over priced) offering?
And why the FUCK does everything have to be a fucking trilogy now? Can't we have some real fucking resolution in a game anymore?!

I know this is hard to accept, but sometimes other people will not like something you like. Or even agree with you on everything in life. Instead of accepting that fact and responding intelligently to his opinion, you throw in a, "NO U! GTFO." Fantastic. At least the interwebs allow you to do that.
I really don't think he did miss the point in regards to Tycho and Anne's tedious chatting. Everything in the game was painfully obvious. I was hoping for more of an adventure, but it really felt like we were just moving the story along. Oh well.
That's fucking ridiculous. If you like reading Penny-Arcade, you'll like this game. If you don't like reading Penny-Arcade, why the fuck did you buy it?
I bought it because I like Penny-Arcade. Will I buy Episode 2? Nope, not right now. Probably not until a Steam package pops up. I would rather have not bought it on Greenhouse. But I do not feel like debating the Greenhouse/Steam issue. I can think of many other 20 dollar games I have gotten a lot more enjoyment out of, sadly. I expected more, so it is my fault.

I can't believe this is still being discussed. Its about the same price as a new release DVD in most stores, except longer and more interactive.

Its a non-issue, 80$ for 30+ hours of gameplay is a steal, also I have no problem pitching 80$ to the guys who have made me laugh over and over again for years. I think back to how many times I was doubled over laughing at a particular witty comic, or them cluing me into a new game I hadn't heard of, this game to me is more then just a game, its a way for me to repay the joy they have given me, I have never before paid for their funny, and I think its fucking about time.

Is this for real?
I spent $60 for a 100+ total hours of gameplay. It's called Mass Effect and I've played through it four times so far and expect a few more playthroughs before ME2 is released.
And I still think I spent too much.
Is it really so alien to suggest that spending $20 for a 5-6 hour game (installment) with little replay value might be a bit too much? Has it really gotten to the point that wanting to pay less for anything is a bad thing?
You could just as easily buy Penny Arcade merchandise in order to payback Gabe and Tycho for years of entertainment.

That just seems fucking cheap to me. You really think less than $60 would be a fair price for that?

No. I just think $60 is a lot to spend on a video game. I got a pretty fair value for my money, but I still think I spent more than I probably should have.
That's not being cheap, that's being concerned about how I spend my money.
Well yeah, fair enough, of course. It seemed like you were saying that you didn't get your money's worth, rather than that you personally probably shouldn't have spent that much on a game.

Half-price sale this weekend only through Steam. Almost makes me wish I had waited just a bit longer to purchase....almost ;-)
Should solve the issue for any lingering fence-sitters out there (except of course for those DRM purists).
Oh well. I'll just wait till they are all released on Steam in a huge bundle for the cheap.
