What should I get my boyfriend?

My boyfriend's birthday is this weekend. I have no idea what to get him! Here's some tidbits...

1. We're both computer geeks. He just built a quad-core with all the special trimmings.

2. He's a huge gamer, but he pretty much has everything. I even bought him the HD-DVD player (right before blu-ray was declared the winner). But he still is using it. It's still usable after all!

3. His car is doing some weird things. He's thinking it's the transmission and he asked if I can't think of anything to give him to give him cash. But that's not special enough in my opinion..

4. He wants me to cook him something for dinner. FYI...I suck at cooking. But I'm willing to do the best I can. Any good recipes you guys recommend?

Anything would be helpful

Beer battered sausage. All you need are bratwurst, onions, olive oil and beer. You cook the bratwurst in the olive oil, then take it out and cook the onions in more olive oil, then put the sausage back in with half a beer and let it stew for like 15 minutes. Delicious.

You should get him the Penny Arcade game on the 360. Teehee.

A very convincing cake box with nothing in it.

LOL. Getting him some cake isn't a bad idea.

Well, it sounds like any kind of electronics or gadgets are out of the question, in the traditional sense, at least.

For example, I have a small knife collection. One year my past girlfriend got me another knife (nothing special in and of itself), however, she paid to have the blade engraved with a small heart and a short message that was an inside joke/thing. I liked it, because I like knives and it was a nice one, but it was cute and memorable/meaningful because of that simple engraving.

Other than that, I would always take a nice memory over something tangible. The opportunity to cook with your partner can be REALLY fun. The messier the better. A surprise handful of cupcake frosting to the face always makes for good times :)

Is there any group or band he would want to go see with you? Check ticketmaster.com or thekindtickets.com for shows coming up.

If you want to make it a memorable birthday, I would think beyond the tangible things.

that's some good advice. Perhaps a weekend away somewhere would be a good idea, like getting a hotel suite?

I would go to a concert but they're always on a work night. Hard for me to get off work :(

Pimped out video card. With like racing stripes and an airhorn, or whatever it is they do to them nowadays.

Note to self: remove 'nowadays' from vocab as to unsound like plusgeezer.

Also, if he is into cooking? You could look around for cooking professionals to come to your house and help(basically do everything but make you guys feel like you are apart of the process) make a really nice meal for the two of you. But thats only if he is into cooking. He wants YOU to cook, so i don't know how well that would fly.

If you wanted something physical, you could get him something "for" his computer. Like a desk, gaming KB/M, chair, i don't know. The area may be uncomfortable to be in, but he does not realize it because he has become so used to it.

And yeah, a hotel vacation or if you guys are the type, camping.

    I second this.
If you're not already there, this would put you in the "Keeper" category 8-)

    what is your budget?

a while back i bought my boyfriend a pocketwatch and had it engraved from this store, they have lots of very nice gift ideas and they are made to be personalized so the gift feels even more memorable, which is fun.

Does he have a pimped out mouse to go with his pimped out rig? How about a mousepad? Keyboard? Peripherals rule. I recommend:

    Razer Deathadder
    Xtrac Ripper XL
    Saitek Eclipse

Unless he's specifically shown interest in a game, it's always risky to buy one for someone else, especially a SO. He may have liked the first 3 games in a series, but the 4th may be a complete departure from it and thus be a bad gift. You really can't predict taste in games as easily. Rely only on things he's directly stated: "that game looks sweet" or "I wish we had more Co-op games to play"

As for gaming things, sometimes us nerds forget about the FULL experience of gaming. It should be comfortable. Make sure he has a nice chair and a decent sound system - something with a sub woofer so the sound can really penetrate you. Make sure his desk works for him - don't let him play on a "TV dinner tray" just because his monitor will fit on it.

Has his mouse been breaking lately? Ask him if he has a favorite mouse brand.

Cosmetically, does his case, monitor, keyboard and mouse match? He may not care initially, but if he ever shows his rig to someone else or takes it to a lan party, it's the first thing anyone else will notice. I know for me and a lot of my friends, the cosmetics of the computer are something we look into when we have money floating around, but we never get to it because when there's money we should be buying parts.

    For Dinner -

Depending on how well you know him and what the situation is, try asking someone in his family what his favorite home cooked dish was when growing up. Chances are it's easy to make (kids don't need gourmet food) and he probably still likes it if he's still a kid inside (plays games).

Does he have a favorite meat he always talks about when you're out eating? Pulled pork? Steak? Cold Cuts? Chances are, he has a preference. Center a meal around his favorite meat and you can't lose.
