DMC1 has odd controls (which you can't change) and doesn't allow you to replay missions like the other games. I wish one of the re-releases had changed that, as it would have probably elevated it to my favorite DMC if they had.
It definately has the best atmosphere and DT is more than just being more powerful, you also got a bunch of DT-exclusive moves. I also liked that when you DT'd, you didn't turn into a demon, you just glowed with energy, only flashing into demon form during your attacks.
As for playing DMC4 and then going back...the aforementioned control issues may make DMC1 hard to play (plus I consider it the hardest of the series...it's the only one I haven't cleared on DMD), DMC2 you just have to mash the gun button to beat the game so you wouldn't have any difficulty playing it (it just won't be any fun). DMC3 would play a lot like DMC4's version of Dante except you can't switch styles whenever you want and you only get 2 melee weapons and 2 guns at a time (in exchange, you get 2 more styles, enemy surfing, DT Flux, and the ability to play as Vergil).
I really really miss that crazy combo beowulf move where he punched them ten million times.
I really really miss that. Why did they remove that. The forward and melee gilgamesh special is not the same. Especially because the special devil trigger one tends to just miss all the time.
At least you can still killerbee jump cancel.

I found gilgamesh to be a lot weaker in general then beowulf and ifrit. Just seemed to lack the awesome range and power the old sets had.

Distorted real impact and the normal kick 13 are massively powerful. (kick 13 because it can guardbreak within the combo) In addition, you can "just time" the extra powerups, when you hold the button and his fists/legs catch fire? Let go at that exact moment and you get a massive damage boost. If you devil trigger at the same time you smash things.
For example, a just timed one flame distorted back and melee will almost completely wipe out an assault.
It's pretty good with shotgun as the accessory, since you can switch to gunslinger to stinger, and switch to darkslayer when you launch them with kick 13 for jumpcancel shenanigans.
I use it when I want to annihilate a single target fast, but in hectic melee's I stick to rebellion.
And gilgamesh/royal guard punchcancelling is really the only way to kill a blitz quickly. He's just too slow otherwise. (After you remove the shield, real impact without devil trigger, then kick 13 twice, then do a devil trigger (not distort) real impact, then do the third form of pandora to SSS him. Stay in devil trigger to do the pandora quick if you can, you might need to shoot him once more, sometimes not all the kick13's hit.)
I use lucifer a lot on bosses, switching between trickster and swordmaster to fill Berial full of swords from a distances is a safe and cheap way to kill him, but I find it difficult to master that style.
I use rebellion a shit ton for huge groups and use gilgamesh either situationally or when facing a couple of tough guys I want to kill quick. I need to get better at killer bee jump cancelling, can only do two reliably. For some reason I can darkslayer ariel combo jump cancel all day though.

I like them both, and I still need to get special edition. I wish the pc version wasn't a bunch of crap, I have a convertor to use a ps2 on my pc and it's on steam. Anyone got that version? It had really bad reviews.

DMC3 had a ton of unlockable costumes and alternate forms (Corrupt Dante, Super Corrupt Dante, etc. for Vergil). DMC4 had Super Nero/Dante, but that was about it.

That WAS it. There is absolutely nothing else in the game beyond the super 'costumes'. Which aren't even costumes.
Steampunk Vergil/Dante are the best. (Yea yea legendary knight w/e)

Oh those. I thought you perhaps hadn't unlocked all of Nero's skills, since level 3 exceed streak, hightime, split, etc, are fucking all kinds of goddam amazing awesome.
Especially the streak. I've just started to really hammer the timing for the triple streak and being able to triple streak, triple streak, triple streak and then just look around and go "hey, where's the enemy gone?" is beyond awesome.
A triple hightime will also knock up an Alto Angelo and you catch it with a buster mid air on the way down. After the buster, run up to it and do another normal hightime*, mid air catch, repeat, dead Alto. *Or run over and knock it up with the DT animation, catch it with a DT buster.
I didn't really appreciate Nero until I got those moves. But you weren't talking about that. :P
