This thread means nothing to me, since like any good gamer should with a game like this, I just bought a new copy whenever I wasn't bothered looking for my old disc. I must have at least 6 copies lurking around here somewhere.
but i have to admit, it's starting to show its age a lil' bit.
This.
I've been playing it on and off for the last month or so, and I really don't think it's as good as it was 8 years ago. Very superficial choices (and not that many of them to begin with), the dialogue is very sparse and excepting the first level, the areas aren't very large. The shooting/melee mechanics are also very awkward, and the vast majority of the voice acting crawled up from the deepest depths of the nine hells.
It's still a great game, but it is, at times, a chore to play.

I once traded in my copy of Deus Ex to a Gamestop. I went looking for it a few months later because I regretted trading it and re-bought the one I'd given them. Talk about self-flagellation
Amazing how some games just continue to hold up over time.
I've played the demo something like five times, but never could finish it. I found it very frustrating trying to figure out what to do, as the game's rules never gelled for me into any sort of instinctual knowledge of how to proceed.
and excepting the first level, the areas aren't very large.

Huh? Hell's Kitchen and environs, Chinatown, Paris, the sub pen, the cathedral - those were all enormous. Especially compared to today's aesthetic of "let's have a couple tiny closets connected by a load screen."
I always think about old games, like Halflife and Deus Ex.
Surely with some small engine modification, modern PCs could easily render several 'levels' at once, and link them together so there was next to zero loading, and just remove a level from ram as soon as it is really far away.
Is there any technical reason why this doesn't exist yet? Or is it the type of thing you need source code to do?
Edit: Also Deus Ex is one of my favourite games ever. . If I hadn't just got a 360 I would replay it right now.
So people talk a lot about this game. It is good I take it?
It's my number one all-time. But also, it's not just that it's good, it's that it's very close to completely unique. There've been very few games before or since that do half the stuff Deus Ex did, or as successfully.
Hmmm... I don't know the specs of my PC or Laptop at home, but it can run counterstrike, would I be able to run this? Did I just ask the most n00b question ever?

In general, wikipedia will have system requirements for most games. It does for Deus Ex.
You need like a 300MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and a 4MB video card. It will run on some ridiculously slow (by today's standards) computers quite beautifully.
EDIT: Slowest system I've run it on is a 700MHz/64MB/8MB. It ran fine, though not at any kind of max detail settings.

You should have no trouble. DX came out back in 2000 and scaled pretty well to older machines even back then. Far as I know the only things that really bogged down performance at the time were bump-mapping and 32-bit textures, and nowhere near to slideshow levels.
In any case, it is true that the game is behind the times; there are better shooters, better stealth games, better RPGs, and better-looking/sounding games on the whole, and by great lengths.
But here's the thing: Deus Ex is still one of the only games to do all of those well. The gameplay still accommodates both straight-up action and more stealthy ways to bypass problems. The engine encourages exploration of it's huge, *huuuuuuuuuuuuuge* levels and the use of physics, skills and augs to create unorthodox solutions to its puzzles. Laughable accents aside, most of the voices and music tracks are pretty damn good. Character building is still a very fluid build-your-own-six-million-dollar-man affair, the odd ways in which skill points are accrued notwithstanding.
I could go on for hours, as could most people here. The bottom line is yes, we've seen better in each category, but not all at once, not all in one game. For my money DX still delivers more bang for the buck, and I'll be coming back to it until pretty much the end of time.
I love this game, but honestly I can't imagine playing it without Shifter anymore, if only cos you stop picking up knives once you get something better. Also, the skull-gun aug.

I would be so happy if they just made a new engine for DX, and kept everything else from the game exactly the same. Well, maybe except for the deleted White House level. I always wanted to go to the Oval Office and beat that sonovabitch to semi-conciseness.
Also, Deus Ex 3. Appearntly it's going to deal with the early hostilities against the Augmented (the Hermann and Anna like people). Potential for awesome: exponential, if done right.

Is it possible to mod games downloaded through Gametap?
No. The way they handle their game files is through a custom mounting interface, so that they can dynamically download partial pieces while you play through the beginning parts of the game. Pretty much, all of the actual data is hidden behind a layer of abstraction, so the only way to mod something is if it's supported within the game's interface. It's a pain.
I guess it makes sense, though, otherwise there's nothing stopping someone from copying the game files and then killing their GameTap account.

Man, when you said knives, throwing knives on golden eye for some reason popped in my head. Those were my favorite. God I wish I still had goldeneye.

Lots of games do this already.. Halo 3 does it, that I specifically know of.
It only needs to stop and load when it needs a drastic change in the assets for the level.

It doesn't exist yet because there's no reason for it. Have you ever tried to play those games on a modern PC? The loading times are about half a second long.

Is the Steam version pre-patched?
All Steam games are automatically patched to the latest version.

You say this like there wasn't a Mac version put out.
Just $22 used on amazon.com.

Edit: and my rudimentary knowledge of how games work lead me to believe it shouldn't be particularly hard to go back and make old games do it.
