Huh?? The guitarist activates OD in that video and nobody else is under OD. What does that have to do with whether or not the drummer can activate OD? I assume the drummer activates his own OD just like the guitarist did there...
Guitarist activates star power, only guitarist has star power.
I thought he meant that only the guitarists have star power in the entire game. The sentence should have read, "when guitarists activate star power, only guitarists have star power."

Star power is pooled, but only one person gets to use it at a time?
In GH2, it was pooled, but you both needed to activate it and you both recieved its boost at the same time.
Now in GH:WT, it's pooled, but if you're drumming, and I'm playing guitar, and I activate it -- you get nothing, AND the star power is depleated?
Meaning if you have a hard ass song on both guitar and drums, and you're both close to failing out, it's pointless to even use it because even if you climb back up, the other guy is screwed?

Well keep in mind that in RB if you deploy OD it only shows the fire/whatever on the person's screen who deployed it, but it keeps everybody from failing. In GH it could be the same thing - just because it only shows the blue flames on the guitarist's screen doesn't mean it's not helping the other guys from failing.
But this one is serious business in a party setting?

Based on the videos available, I'd venture to say:
There is a pooled Star Power meter.
There is a pooled Rock Meter for the band.
There are individual green-to-red meters for the bandmates.
Being in the red on the individual meter drags down the band Rock Meter. Being in the green pulls it up, with SP activated even more so.
Star Power seems to take one and a half bulb now. More than one person can activate SP at a time, but it's only active for the people who activate it, not the band as a whole.
Only failing on the band Rock Meter fails the song.
So there's no failing out. Just dragging down the band until everyone fails. So if the drummer and the guitar player both hit tough patches at the same time, the best strategy would be for the better player to activate SP, since he'd hit more notes with it and therefore keep up the Rock Meter better.
But of course, it's tough to say exactly since there are no videos yet of someone actually failing.
But this one is serious business in a party setting?
GH:WT is for people who party hard. There will be no fucking around and having fun on Activision's watch. Parties will be created around GH:WT tournaments. Wherein if you lose, you will be ridiculed as being less of a man (even if you're a woman) and you won't be invited to the next party as penance.
We followed up "Spiderwebs" with an uneven rendition of the "What I've Done" by Linkin Park from the Transformers soundtrack, which in turn had me asking about the ultimate Transformer's song, "You've Got The Touch" from the original animated film.
"We're working on it," answered one of the reps, who had been on vocals when I came in.
"Really!?"
"No."
Bastard, raising my hopes and crushing my dreams.
As for the experience itself, we might as well have been playing Rock Band, except for a few minor differences and one major one - Guitar Hero's guitar and drum notes feel more natural. They make more sense from a musical standpoint, and while I didn't play the drums myself for fear of exposing my newfound lack of rhythm, watching to Neversoft guy take on a song on expert difficulty looked as if he were really playing the drums. I almost felt like I could play along myself, but that could have simply been the beer.
Incidentally I spoke with the friendly Activision PR people today, who offered to let me come and play the game more sober. Then they offered me another beer.
Guy from Kotaku says that the parts feel "more natural" in GHWT. I'd wager it's the beer talking, though.

So I got the Dragonforce pack. It's actually very fun (for me). None of them are anywhere close to as hard as TTFAF, though they're very similar (olol all Dragonforce songs sound the same). I suppose you could call them TTFAF-lite. Operation Ground and Pound is my favourite (and the only one I could even 4* ).
Recommended for people who enjoy a challenge. They're not super duper hard to pass with smart SP usage - I passed them all first try, although after playing them for a couple of hours I got so wore down that I ended up failing Heroes Of Our Time and decided to call it a night. :P
They're well-charted - I can't comment on overcharting or undercharting, but it felt appropriate.
I feel like Dragonforce is a band that was created for a purpose, and that purpose was not to make good music, but to make music that results in charts that are fun to play in Guitar Hero.
It is their destiny. Maybe that's why all their songs sound the same.
That said, if there is more than one song like TTFAF in GH:WT, then there are too many.

So has anybody listened to Metallica's new single, The Day That Never Comes? It just came out today. Then I remembered the whole album is hitting GH3 in a few weeks. It sounds like it should be a really fun song to play. I wish I had something other than Wii so I could download it.
If they ever release a keyboard, it better be compatible with Keyboardmania. But yeah, it doesn't seem like something that would catch on quite as easily as the guitar and drums. For controlling in a game, it would be lot more complicated/more difficult to get into compared to the 5-6 buttons the other instruments have. One of the keyboard's defining features is just how many keys it has. Also, not as much "cool" factor for most people.
I honestly don't see ANYONE buying ANYTHING that can only be used in the music creator.
This is the one place where the "just go buy a real one" argument is kind of true. If you're going to go buy a keyboard to create music -- why not just go buy a real keyboard and create music.
I totally hate the argument "JUST PLAY REAL GUITAR" because it misses the point - we're playing a GAME. But when the goal of the music creator is to create music...just go buy a real one.
If GH:WT2 lets you use the keyboard in game, then I guess I'd expect a surge in sales at that point. But until then, no one will buy it.

If they support a keyboard, they best just add support for MIDI/USB and leave it at that. I mean, feel free to take an existing USB keyboard and brand "Guitar Hero" on it, like with the microphones, but for the love of god, don't make me buy an otherwise worthless keyboard peripheral.

Well, there's already MIDI support through the drumset, so it'd probably be something like that, yeah.

What I'm thinking is, whatever this peripheral is, it's been added at the last minute to try and trump Rock Band, but it was too late to implement it into the main game so they ended up sticking it into the music creator. Then in World Tour 2, it'll be in the main game.
Maybe a keytar that features a strum bar that would, essentially, be two instruments in one. Ridiculous, you say? Not ridiculous enough for...GUITAR HERO!

The lag isn't calibrated correctly ;-P Great song though, one of my favorites. Other than 4:06 that was pretty much perfectly done too, pretty cool IMO.

So, yeah, news from G4...
UPDATE (8.21.08): It turns out we got some wires crossed on this story: According to a Red Octane rep., there is no new peripheral. There is an option in the Studio Mode to add keyboard sounds but that comes from the guitar. The input port on the drums is for any other instrument you would like to add to the tracks. Our apologies for misinterpreting.
Although that makes it sound like you can already plug a MIDI keyboard into the drumset port.
Soooo close to 5-stars on Operation Ground & Pound.
That song is so fun.
I d/l'd the Dragonforce pack, and suprisingly I can actually pass Ground & Pound (best I've managed is a high 3 star run. Multiplier was around 1.8).
Still haven't been able to get through the other two though.
I don't really like Revolution Deathsquad so I've only tried it 3-4 times and I keep failing out between 74-78% on Heros of Our Time. That solo is just too damn long and I can never hit it with a full SP gauge.

Yeah - I've failed each of Heroes of Our Time and Revolution Deathsquad only once each, but I'm invariably deep in the red at the end of their solos. Operation Ground & Pound is much easier (though only relatively, of course) and I find it a lot more fun.

EDIT: Woo did it for me!
Because that's what I want. Another plastic toy instrument.
I just don't like playing the keyboard solo on Smokin' with guitar. Doesn't feel right.
You know you all want this in GHWT...
Well...
I'd say the smart money would probably be on a keyboard that they can then in later editions add to the regular game modes, if they want.
