Im really slacking at work today - I have the next week and a half off to go catch R.E.M. once in Boston, and once in NYC. In addition to thinking about finding the HMX building in Beantown and shaking the hand of whoever walks out first, I'm listening to tons of R.E.M. to psych myself up -- and to get ready for ANYTHING, because the setlists have been changing like crazy night to night.
And I've really started getting angry at how criminal it is that there's not an R.E.M. pack yet.
Every album they've ever released (although...I had a TOUGH time with Reveal) has at least 3 songs off of it that I'd love to play in Rock Band.
But if any full album ever got the DLC treatment?
Automatic For The People.
I'll take it! I was just thinking, of all the albums, and all the parts on all the albums, which has the best chance. Murmur doesn't really have a huge 'hit' off it, but damn I'd do anything to play 'laughing'. Then I realized that Automatic For The People has an instrumental, and Nightswimming, which is all piano. I think I was just thinking about Ignoreland, Man On The Moon, Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite and Monty Got A Raw Deal when I decided Automatic Would be the perfect blend of 'hits' casual fans would buy, and fun guitar parts.
But yes, a thousand times I would purchase Murmur.
In a dream world, I'd want New Adventures In Hi Fi, but thats even less likely than murmur.
And Ive heard nothing but good things about The National, so I'm def getting there in time to catch them.

I doubt it'll work with this generation of technology. Extracting the different music tracks properly (guitar, drums, etc) especially those that overlap and then charting them properly so that it can be played by a human being just cannot be automated. As it is, mp3s are difficult to extract the tracks from and it's only just being developed. It simply cannot be "patched in" and it has to be some hi tech hardware that would probably worth more than most average people can make.
Arikado can you provide some linkage to this tech you're referencing?
I just don't see it being possible to "extract" "tracks" from an mp3, considering an mp3 is a stereo mixdown.
So while you could isolate certain frequencies within the mix and, using compression algorithms, separate roughly by dynamics,
there really would be no way to take out an exact copy of the original track.
Are you sure they're not trying develop some file compression tech that preempts the need to mix down to a single stereo file,
so we'd actually be listening to the original session, however many tracks that may be?
Consider that Billy Corgan supposedly recorded up to 100 guitar tracks on a single song for Siamese Dream.
Would the aforementioned tech be able to recognize all those layered guitars?
It would blow my mind.
Check this site out http://www.celemony.com/cms/. They developed software that can strip out individual notes from chords so I imagine it can also split out the different instruments.
I was actually already familiar with celemony, but I still feel like we're very far from the ability to distill mixed audio into its separate components.
That doesn't mean celemony isn't mind-blowing (and a little bit scary),
but what Arikado thought the Korean company was doing would have been totally OMGElephant!
Plus, contrary to what that narrator said, you can still hear the slight creak of time-shifted audio in that video.
I just got my copy of Rockband today from Amazon. Anyhow, I just set everything up and noticed that the padding on my green pad is different from the other pads; it's has less of a "rubbery" texture. The pad is also more of a powdery gray color than a smooth black. Is this how it normally is?
I am in such Rock Band withdrawal, right now. My group hasn't been able to get together in two weeks, because our bass player found Jesus and went to Honduras on a mission trip, or whatever. Just like a real band, right? :P

Fixed for real band experience
That may well be the immediate result of going on a "mission trip" in Honduras. ;-)
So last night I went to my buddy's home and noticed he was stuck in his GH3 Hard career (Knights of Cydonia). Feeling all awesome, I proceeded to clear out all songs and got cockblocked by the legendary Slayer and did a 96% on One (first try!). After a bunch of coop GH, I was feeling all awesome after nailing HOPOs I'd never thought I could in RB.
Lo and behold, I finally noticed what people said about the WIDE timing on everything in GH3. Dammit I was barely 3 staring stuff tonight on expert songs and failed Wonderwall twice. AGH. I feel so dirty.
Bah! I played some drums and guitar tonight and wanted to try vocals, but something's wrong. Even with the microphone volume all the way up in the vocal options, I can barely hear myself through the speakers. It registers the pitch fine; and if I scream into the mic I'll be able to hear it faintly. I tried with both the stock usb microphone and my xbox live headset; same thing for both. If I put the headset mic like literally right next to my mouth, it registers a lot better.
I tried turning the instrument volume and such down in the main menu options, but that doesn't really help. I checked the rockband forums and there's a thread w/ a similar issue, but no solution.
Oh, I also plugged the usb mic into my PC to test it out. It seems to work fine. I've no clue if it's a hardware issue or what. Any suggestions?
Also, a big stink is being thrown on the ScoreHero vocals forum because one of the top vocalists on the PS3 took "Glitchkrieg Bop" to the next level and put up a score of 313,044 (without the glitch the best score should be in the 138k range) and has taken the first place spot on the PS3 leaderboards.
I personally don't care about it, even more so since it's someone from the PS3 side, but it does amaze me how much people are able to squeeze out of that one song.
Not worth going into too much detail, but basically the last phrase of Blitzkrieg Bop can yield far more points than it should if Overdrive ends in the middle of the phrase with the amount be totally random. There are a couple of other songs where a similar glitch is present like Enter Sandman.
Wait... You're supposed to be able to hear yourself through the speakers?
Oh shit, is that right? I just naturally assumed that my voice would be amplified through the speakers. And yea, Arikado, I tried turning the band and stuff way low, but then I had no music and super low vocals still. I'll probably give customer support a call later today to see if this is the norm.
Hmm, I can easily turn up my mic, turn down the recorded vocals, and hear pretty much just myself while singing. And no need to turn down the rest of the game, or anything, either. You can mess with all of this mid-song using the controller for the vocalist. I suppose my experience could be better than most because of playing the game through a pretty nice sound system.
Incidentally, I only do the above on songs that I know extremely well. I usually keep my vocals at about the same volume as the originals.
Would it be possible to turn everything down as far as it will go, except the singer, record the results, then "play the game" with them? I'm not going to do it, I'm just curious.

You can actually just hold the microphone up to the tv speakers, with marginal results.
I don't expect you'll be 100%ing anything on expert with this, though.
IGN has posted a preview of the Doolittle album DLC here.
A lot of the songs have talkies in them, which makes me a sad panda. HOWEVER, Pixies = awesome. Totally grabbing this album if anything for the required whistling section for La La Love You.

Man, IGN needs to hire better Rock Band players. Because those guys suck, and thus their opinion of the DLC is almost totally irrelevant to me given that my experience with it will be so different.
Looking forward to the album. I'm bound to enjoy at least some of the songs on it, if not the whole thing.
Also, now that we've exhausted the supply of announced albums (with the exception of ones that will probably never come), I'm interested to see what they'll announce next.
2. May have to purchase Doolittle. I just need to convince my friend (the guy who owns the game) which will be hard, since the drums look pretty boring.
3. just beat the winery level in Hitman: Blood Money. I assassinated everybody.
I wouldn't look to that video for the drum charts, as you can tell he's playing on hard, if not medium.
16's on the hi-hat were 8ths and most of the kicks were absent, among other things.
Well, I have officially had another face-to-face confrontation with my downstairs neighbors over Rock Band. This time at 8PM, the woman who lives below me sent her kids up to tell me to stop whatever I was doing. I told them that I should probably talk to their Mom about it. When she finally came up, she was wearing a shirt and no pants, and yelling about how I was trying to give her a nervous breakdown with all that tapping on the floor and how I can't walk around my living room at night because it's too loud for her and all kinds of craziness.
I put a folded up sleeping bag under the drums already, I have silencer pads, and basically I just told her to fuck off because it was 8PM and I live below people who play the piano until 10.

I really must remember to get a ground floor apartment when I move this summer... Drums are always such a pain in apartments, even the video game version apparently.
this discussion reminds me of when I skated a lot, I shared an apartment with 2 other guys and I would practice flip tricks in the living room.. we had complaints via the landlord, then this old lady that lived directly below us came up the stairs huffing and puffing (like literally it was hard for her to come upstairs) so I stopped flipping my board around in the apartment..
but I cannot attest more for apartments with cement floors because we used to hang at this one kid's house and I swear we could have put a mini ramp in his living room with no complaints from the neighbors
Argh, my friend who owns the Rock Band stuff will not stop downloading tons and tons of new DLC. I just begin to barely get caught up on familiarizing myself with the vocals of one batch of DLC, and now there's a whole new batch.
I don't even listen to my actual, personal music collection anymore. I just listen to our Rock Band songs, trying to get more familiar with stuff.
