Well, topic. A fast-paced FPS for the PC that's either a few years old and still available, or free.
My PC is kinda old, 1.8GHz, ATI Radeon 9600, 512MB ram, and yeah, I am thinking about upgrading it. Big time. Anyway, I want something to play while getting the cash. Something along the lines of Q3/UT games.
Thanks in advance.
Oh, and by still available, I mean retail. Wont buy stuff online since I lack a credit card.
EDIT: Was mostly looking for a game with a still-active multiplayer community, as multiplayer is my thing. Honestly, I dunno how many that play Q3: Team/arena, but it ain't available here anymore anyway.
hey, Yahtzee (from Zero Punctuation) did a review of Painkiller the other day, it's a Polish developed FPS from '04
I picked it up solely on his suggestion it was the spiritual successor to Doom 2(erk). lots of fast paced blood and gore, with original(ish) weaponry.
I'm enjoying the hell out of it, and it's cheap and very "available."
Warsow is a pretty decent, free FPS that's very fast-paced. It's based off the Quake 2 engine and emphasizes wall-jumps and strafe-jumping, along with moving at high speed and fluidity throughout the maps. It's multi-player only though, and the skill gap between new players and ones that have been playing for awhile is pretty big. Look it up though if you want a challenge. I don't play it anymore but I did really enjoy the feeling of moving through the maps at breakneck speed.

Serious Sam is another game in a similar vein, although that game focusses more on wide open spaces with hundreds (and I literally mean hundreds ) of opponents attacking you. Also supports 4 player co-op, which is a big plus.
I've tried warsow, and it was fun for a while, but I'm tired of it now.
That korean game which is in beta seems okay, though I'm not sure if my computer would run it, and either way I don't want to start playing a game where you eventually must pay them money to be able to play properly.
And I checked out Yahtzee's review of Painkiller. It does seem good, but, believe it or not, it is not available anymore where I live. I should've added I'm in Sweden, though usually that doesn't matter in these cases.
Painkiller: Overdose is still here though. Dunno about system requirements, but it does look pretty good. Anyone tried it?
EDIT: No version of serious sam is still available here, either. I'm starting to think that this store is shitty, though generally it is the best. I do know of another store that has such high prices that they rarely sell anything, and they have lots of old games. I can write a list of games to check if they have it. : P
I actually enjoyed the original more then overdose...granted I only played like 30 mn of it but yeah. Still ah great game can't go wrong sticking people to walls.
grab ut2k4 if you don't already have it, then dl the U4E mod and chaos ut
And of course the community packs and the mega map packs and all that jazz. Then find any map made by Warbest (because his maps were awesome) and any other maps that catch your eye. Watch your UT2k4 folder grow and grow and grow.
For Painkiller, you could see if it's available on Steam there, if not, have someone gift it to you and paypal them the money. Both Painkillers are on Steam now.

He doesn't have a credit card so I don't think that's an option for him.

Personally, I thought overdose was complete shit. I love the original painkiller, and it's expansion...but overdose had really crappy one liners, and uninteresting levels. That is just from the demo too, after that I had no desire to buy the game at all. I'd say try to find yourself a copy of Painkiller Gold Edtion(or black edition whichever) and play that.
Is UT2004 still big? I mean, I thought most would move on to UT3.
And yeah, I'll look for Painkiller at the weird shop as soon as I can. If they do not have it, I'll have to pass on it. The overdose demo download just finished, so I'll have a look at it.

I wouldn't know, I stick to bot matches. Just as much fun without the irritating assholes you find online.
Serious Sam and Painkiller would be my choices, unless you want to go oldschool and pick up Doom 2 (which remains as one of the best first person shooters to exist).
Good idea, they just recently released Perseus Mandate, so he ought to be able to find the compilation pack of all 3 still in stores.
FEAR is awesome. The AI is very good at flanking and there's nothing quite like pulling off a slow-mo kick to the head. Tonnes of ballistic fun for all the family*
*presumes all members of family are above 18 years of age and are not psychologically affected by massive amounts of blood carnage violence horror.
Half-Life mods, like The Specialists or Natural Selection or Counterstrike or Day of Defeat. Heck with a 9600 you could play HL2 mods too, like Age of Chivalry or Insurgency or DIPRIP.
I wouldn't know, I stick to bot matches. Just as much fun without the irritating assholes you find online.
Gabe-style.
Also, Doom 2 is nowhere to be found. Except on Steam. But I can't buy it from there.
I don't talk to the bots.

Man you and me both. I never played online I hated it, shitty servers and so many shit heads. It was worse then CS!
Well, I mean I would play online but not very often. Most of the time the players were either total assholes, or they were so goddamned good that it just wasn't any fun to play with them. That and the servers always rotated the shittiest maps possible, or just the same map over and over and over. Seriously, how many motherfucking servers spread across all of the UT games are running Facing Worlds, 24/7? It was a cool map but after the hundredth time I got kinda tired of it.
Windows XP/2000 with Service Packs,
Pentium 4 1.7 GHz or equivalent,
512 MB RAM,
5 GB hard disk space,
DirectX 9.0-compliant sound card,
64 MB GeForce 4 Ti or Radeon 9000 or equivalent with hardware T&L and PS,
DirectX 9.0c April edition
He seems to just hit those marks. It might not be brilliant looking or anything, but I reckon he should be able to run it, the 9600 is substantially better than a 9000.
Some friends and I have been playing Zombie Panic for the past couple weeks in anticipation of Left4Dead, whenever that's supposed to come out (November?). It's nothing spectacular, but it can be pretty entertaining when you have a group to play with.
Warsow. I know you said that you've tried it already, but how good did you get at it? Warsow can only give back as much as you put in, and unless you actually get good at the movement it's really hard to judge the game. Once you're good enough just speedrunning through maps can be more entertaining than playing most other games, and it's very relaxing. They've also been introducing features designed to help new players ease into the game. Plus, the game is free, has an active competitive community, and runs well on older machines.
Quake 3. Various mods are still active, CPMA being the most popular. Just like Warsow, though, you can only really start enjoying it once you've at least mastered the basics of the movement. Besides that, most of the people left are the diehards, so it can be hard to start as a new player. But ask around and you can find someone to show you the ropes.
Painkiller. The competitive scene isn't that great, and the gameplay isn't as deep as Warsow or Q3, but it's a fun single player game.
Good idea, they just recently released Perseus Mandate, so he ought to be able to find the compilation pack of all 3 still in stores.

Don't forget the multiplayer element of FEAR, aka FEAR Combat, is free
Cellfactor Revolution, the game designed to show off AEGIA PhysX but doesn't actually require a PhysX card to play.
Similar to Kkreiger in that it's as much a tech demo as it is a game.
It runs incredibly well, being designed for korean lan cafe's with quite old computers. I only have a decent machine, and I run it at 100fps max settings.
As for paying, my theory is that if you play a lot, you won't need to pay, because you make pretty good ingame money just playing. I make about 300gp a match, and to get a 1 day license for the most expensive gun right now is 1,400gp, so about 5 rounds. Either way, I suggest you at least try it, its a small download, and pretty decent time killer if nothing else.

As an aside, you can buy disposable credit cards from grocery stores that only have $5-25 on them. If that's your only stumbling block from buying stuff online, there's a way around it.
Make sure you use almost all of it, though. It'll get declined if you charge more than the remaining balance with an Internet transaction, so if you leave like $2 on there it's hard to get off. Not impossible, though, just buy something at a store, have them charge the balance to the card and then pay the rest with cash.

The Specialists is an excellent choice as long as you stay away from the Roleplaying community entirely. It's kindof dead, but you can still occasionally find a good game.
This thread reminds me that I kind of miss Quake 2. I don't even know if it's any good now, I barely remember it, but I remember loving it. Same goes for Unreal 2, which I enjoyed very much. r 2? Totally missed that one.
I forgot, Urban Terror, a mod for Quake 3, is now a standalone FREE mod. give it a go, low low sys requirements, and the most fun I had shooting people online until COD4 recently dropped.
