See, what I love about Vanguard is that it has housing and boating. I love that in Ultima.
Why won't more MMOs give me boats and houses? Gah!
I hear you sir. All I wanted in WoW were BOATS. So I could fish between....is...Darkshore and whatever that elf island is.
But nooooo.
That's why I like VG and EQ2. Hell, even LOTRO. it provides some other goals besides just killing. I won't lie...I like when a new rug drops off a kill more than if it was awesome armor. =p

This might be worth checking out if it's really that good. Lately the only MMO I've really bothered to play (and had cash to) is Maple Story D:D: so this might be worth looking into if only to get me away from that.
So level 10 now, and still enjoying the game. The interface is rough and the character models are still bad. But even with the faults I find, the game is very enjoyable. Finding a crazy huge dungeon in the bottom of a shipwrecked boat is so cool. The crafting is just too much fun too. Was planning on logging at like 11 last night but ended up crafting till 1am.
Would defenitely love to get into a group with a few more members and go wreck some things.
I still have a few buddy keys and another collectors edition on the way, so PM me for a key.
It sounds like there are a few new players that are getting to about lvl 10 without having grouped much. That is what I did and while the leveling up to that point was semi interesting the game really took off for me when I started grouping.
It would also be nice if we had an alt night once or twice a week so that the people that are just getting to lvl 10 could have a chance to experience how awsome a PA group is. We have run multiple groups on a few occasions but don't quite have enough people to do that on a consistant basis.
I'm interested in giving this a shot so if anyone has a spare buddy key or whatever let's you try the game, that'd be awesome.
At least one person was giving out keys on the Vanguard official forum, in the Newbie area.

I wish there were more new players, as the newbie areas are basically deserted.
Also, unlike WoW, where the "main" quests lead your character to higher-level areas as they level up, Vanguard just seems to assume that after a certain point you'll figure out where the capital cities and such are on your own. It's kind of sloppy and confusing.

On the other hand: you get to talk to other people to learn about the game, instead of depending solely on in-game information and thottbot.

well my point is that levels 1-10, at least, should be more or less "tutorial" levels where the major locations are introduced, concepts are explained, etc.
whereas in Vanguard it piles some "here's how to do some basic stuff" in at level 1 and then leaves you to puzzle out the rest.

Oh
ho-hum, that's a pretty steep learning curve.
fingers crossed for the new newbie/trial island to have a better tutorial/thing.

so are there any new players on tonight, especially in Thestra?
I need somebody to quest with, as I'm basically fucking lost
maybe you guys are right about questing and I shouldn't bother with it so much =p I'm so used to the usual paradigm where you are pretty much led through quests and if you don't do them, you're shooting yourself in the foot, because you don't get quest reward upgrades for your gear, or quest xp, or money for the quests, and rep, etc. and I'm a chronic completionist - I prolly have almost every quest in WoW completed multiple times.
I should get my ass in the guild and group with you guys. I always sort of want to feel like I have the hang of the game before I subject other people to my inept self, but if grouping would bring me out of the quest doldrums, bring it on =p
You know, tomorrow night, I'll hop on my 16 Paladin, if any of you want to group for an alt night. At least that's the plan for right now; shit could happen, and I may not be able to come on at all, but who knows.

I am going to cook dinner real fast, then I'll hop on for a few minutes to invite you into the guild if Fooms or anyone else that can invite isn't on. What's your character's name again? If it's on the roster, I am far too lazy to go back to the first page.

I actually felt this game gives you the information you need to do your quests much easier than WoW does. Hell, just going into your quest log and at the bottom of the quest information most quests give you a waypoint you can activate to where you need to go. I've found it very easy to quest thus far, at least in the areas I've visited, being a High Elf those being Leth Nurae and now Veskel's Exchange.

some of them are just lovely like that, but many of the ones I've run into in the dark elf areas have been so very enigmatic. half of them I can't find the objectives, and some of them I manage to complete and then forget where the questgivers were the next day... several questgivers are actually physically hiding behind huge boulders for goodness sake -_-

The dark elf starting area is horrible. You spend 12 levels stuck in a claustrophobic, boring desert canyon when Qalia has some of the most amazing open landscapes in the entire game. The mobs are packed together, the quests few and far between, and the altars and bindstones are in terribly inconvenient areas.
Personally, I'd make the trek up to Khal as soon as you can. Much better area. I do love Thestra because it has some great dungeons but it isn't all that interesting. Qalia has some great areas: the Infineum plateau, the River Valley, and the coastal areas up in the northeast are really cool.
But if you must, emigrating to Thestra can also solve your problems. The Tursh/Three Rivers area will get you to 14 or so, you can run KE to 18 or 19, quest around Silverlake to 22, then run TK until 30. Renton Keep is a good bind spot as it's centralized and has both a flight master (to get to Tursh quickly) and a riftstone (to get to NT or other places).
Not very happy with Vanguard right now. Spent a couple of hours mining and getting all the materials ready to make some new armor. Went to the finishing forge to make some heavy pants and the game crashed right before I was to finish them. So all that time spent was wasted, I lost all the materials when the game crashed.

That largely went over my head but it sounds like good advice I'll have to examine my map and take a little trip next time I log in.
No you lost the mats the moment you started crafting, so if you can't complet the item (for some reson) the mats are lost.
I get that, the chat window logs the item being deleted.
You would think with a crafting system as in depth as this, the developers would have put in some sort of fail safe. The server should have known that the crafting wasn't finished/canceled and allowed a small window of time to log back on and resume where I left off.
Skrilian poiint isn't a dungean, its just a outpost for quests. There are several dungeans areound there though, there was a lizardman one that we went and looked nto but nothing came of it.
I wont beable to group late tonight, so will try and organize a low / mid level run if possible. I just cant' stay up past 10 oclock usualy gotta work at 7 am or so. Just not hardcore enough anymore. lol

I still have buddy keys available as well. All 10 of them, in fact! Seems everyone got their keys while I was still waiting for the game, which means mine might not actually be needed anymore. No biggie, I can just hold onto them. Maybe Sneak could put something in the original post listing those who have keys? I've seen the question asked here a couple times but I don't know if those people got their keys or not. It'd be easy to have someone PM and then I'd know I was giving them a key and it'd be used (well, most likely).
I logged on myself last night and was commenting on how gorgeous the game was since I had just installed my new video card. I ran around just marvelling at it all! Then I got bummed again because I still see those flickering square textures inside trees and stuff, and then I ported through a 'Jin portal' type thing and ended up way south of where I had been before. It was kinda cool but where it looked like there was supposed to be bridges, there was only sky. I saw NPCs walking along them, which meant it appeared as if they were walking in the air. I didn't actually try stepping on the bridge, fearing I would fall and then take a penalty.
So, yeah... not enitrely sure if even the new kickass graphics are going to do it for me with all the niggling problems that continue to distract me from the general fun of the game.
It was bound to happen...Camilla and I were in an epic battle and afterwards, I had to sit down to rest. Sadly, I didn't check to see where Camilla was before sitting.

On an unrelated note it does not look like I can group tonight, Fridays are notoriously bad for that. Maybe we could run the alt night on Fridays since I don't have one atm...
