All whiners just got nullified. Logic is neat.

    That's one interpretation.

Another interpretation of the same thing is that Sony are offering financial incentives for developers to restrict access to demos.

I doubt that'll matter much. Developers and publishers will want their marketing (demos, trailers) to reach as many people as possible. The only demos I actually expect to see on Qore are for the big games that have already got a ton of hype behind them (like GT5, CoD5 or Resistance 2).

This thread has been pretty retarded btw. I loved how some people didn't think magazines had adverts... o_O

Oh I think they'll keep whining. Being illogical is what people are all about.

They just don't have any justification anymore.

I just want to point out:
Last-gen, development companies and publishing companies said they would have to start selling games for 60 bucks in the "next-gen" to cover increased development costs. I seem to remember huge shitstorms, loud cries of "I WILL NEVER BUY A 360 EVAR!!!!" even louder cries of "HALO 3 IS 60 BUCKS?!?!? HELL NO WE WONT GO!".
    And then the systems launched.
    Where did the complaints go?

    Yeeeeeaaahhhh.

(Minor point: I agree with you guys, I do think it's bullshit to make people pay for demos. I do think Sony is being fucking retarded. And I do agree my arguement is flawed. My main point is, however, that there seems to be a culture of whinybitching about something you don't like, then, once it actually happens, being passive-agressively complacent about it.)

Thanks ML :) I sincerely hope we see some great content out of their efforts; it'll be twice as rewarding if that content does eventually move on to non-subscribers as well - netting out to a very positive effect for everyone who owns a PS3.

It's optimism, but I'd rather be glass-half-full on this one. Being negative's easy - seeing the good things and letting the cynicism go? A wee bit tougher, but worth it.

The funny thing is that if it is true that Sony is essentially funding demos through Qore, what's stopping 3rd party publishers from then offering these same demos on PC, Steam, Xbox LIVE, magazine pack-ins, etc.? I think that's actually a good thing, even if you're a gamer that never uses Qore once.

Essentially, Qore subscribers would be subsidizing demos for the good of the community. Cool!

Hey now, be nice! I was a fan of hers when she was originally on Buzz Out Loud. It's the only reason why I'm remotely interested in Qore. I admit, I'd much rather have her than Major Nelson on his Major's Minute. :)

She's a better pick than Major Nelson, I'll give you that. :P

I have yet to see anyone point out what's illogical about my points or show that there is no justification for them. But hey, making false claims to the high ground is what people are all about.

I don't particularly disbelieve Threepio, anyway. It's entirely plausible someone at Sony told him all those things, and just making them up to support a Sony Uber Alles mentality in the current environment would be entirely too risky. It's the motivation of his sources which I question.

Anyways, I forgot to post my impressions. Qore issue one has SOCOM Confrontation, Star Wars Force Unleashed, Clank PSP, Afro Ninja, and Soul Calibur IV content, as well as a big trailer for The Incredible Hulk movie. The SOCOM content includes a video where developers talk about general aspects of the game, a clan features video, an exclusive theme, screenshots, and access to the beta. The Star Wars Force Unleashed videos were my favorite. They showed off a lot of gameplay and force powers, and another video was a battle with a rancor. Once again, there were also a lot of screenshots and concept art available for viewing, and a funny video about a young woman applying to be Darth Vader's secret apprentice.

The Afro Ninja and Soul Calibur IV content were just two videos with gameplay footage and a developer talking about the game. Clank was similar, not as much content as SOCOM or Star Wars, but I believe it had some screenshots and/or concept art tossed in as well. After that, the movie trailer and the the download page which included the SOCOM beta when it's available, the theme, and Calling All Cars if you're an annual subscriber. Advertisements were scarce and very short. I was able to skip the MGS4 one and the two or three others I came across only lasted about five seconds.

Overall, the Star Wars videos were the best, and SOCOM was interesting, but I'm a little disappointed there's no cover system in the game. They talk about it being the most tactical game, after all. It still looks fun, so I'll hold my opinions until I get to play the beta.

It was only the first issue of Qore, so hopefully future episodes will have more exciting content than a few videos. They have mentioned more is in store for Qore, including all kinds of mini-games. I think that would make it more appealing. The videos didn't really show anything new to me, although the Force Unleashed videos showing off the force powers were great - you can levitate someone and throw your saber at them, impaling them. Excited. I got a kick out of them not mentioning it's for the 360 at all when they listed the platforms it's going to be on.

Cool!

Kinda like XBL Gold members subsidize all the free stuff on XBL.

    What free stuff on XBL?

See Scarab's list. Also, things like the various Halo map packs are often pay in the beginning, but become free after a while. I believe the Heroic Map Pack is now free.

Contrary to popular belief (or what Sony fanboys will tell you), there is a lot to Xbox LIVE that doesn't require gold subscription. I've actually been told by crazy Sony fanboys that insist that Achievements are only available if you pay for them, or that you can't browse the Marketplace or buy things, which is just untrue.

I could swear someone recently told me that when they tried to cancel their Live sub, the customer service rep lied to him and tried to tell him that he'd lose all his achievements if he cancelled.

Live is pretty great, and fairly cheap all things considered, but a lot of the "free" stuff is just advertising (and oddly, it's only movie/tv show themes/pictures that tend to be free. Everything game-related tends to cost money), or is "DLC" that's already on the disc (like the Dead Rising content, Bullet Witch stuff, etc)

The biggest problem with live for me is that the difference between what silver and gold offer does not justify the cost.

That's not unique to people not liking the Xbox. I've had a 360 owner tell me that you have to pay in order to download demos and buy downloadable games, apparently not realising that you can make a Silver account for free.

SCEA's handling of the Playstation Store has been laughably inept at best from day one, so the announcement of something as hideously lame as this doesn't shock me much. They just don't have a fucking clue what the hell they're doing. HALP HOW I RUN ONLINE STORE?

Random tangent, it's "fun" that you have to lie about your place of residence if you want to be able to save the game in your legally bought copy of Viva Pinata PC. :|
I wonder if the stores selling 360s here mention the fact that there's no Live service for this country.

what's your argument for that? i'm just curious. i've had a great experience with the store. i download demos pretty much every week, i'm constantly buying shit (aww yeah pixeljunk), the downloads are speedy (as long as you don't rush to grab everything as soon as the thursday update), it uses real money, it looks good, especially now, streaming trailer downloads, unrestricted regional stores, etc etc etc

i don't see how 'laughably inept at best' really equates

edit: ever since naughty dog fixed the american uncharted demo for PAL users who didn't really have any automatic entitlement to it anyway, i've had a lot of faith that the people behind the store are working really hard to make it a great experience. and it has been great for me

I regret having bought this. It reallywasn't worth the money. CAC isn't that great, either.

I actually enjoyed Qore. The videos were interesting, with gameplay I hadn't seen before. And I always love hearing devs talk about games. Ammount of time watching vs. cost = win for me.

He did that for very good reason! (Though my wife loves the Yaris owl.)

Can I still get Aegis Wing free?

I'm fairly certain you can; I believe the only timed freebies were Undertow from the Great Live Outage of Christmas '07, and when they were briefly offering UNO and Carcassone for free.

Also, I doubt it's still available but the only free Gamerpic content that I've actually kept besides the Yaris stuff was the free Shark Week pics—and that's because hammerhead sharks are timeless.

Wait a minute, the demos are things that qore itself is funding that otherwise wouldn't occur?

    That's one interpretation.

Another interpretation of the same thing is that Sony are offering financial incentives for developers to restrict access to demos.

I doubt that'll matter much. Developers and publishers will want their marketing (demos, trailers) to reach as many people as possible. The only demos I actually expect to see on Qore are for the big games that have already got a ton of hype behind them (like GT5, CoD5 or Resistance 2).

This thread has been pretty retarded btw. I loved how some people didn't think magazines had adverts... o_O

Bringing this back up. You know what's nice about magazine adverts?

Go on, I'll let you guess.

Am I the only one who is still mad that we pay for TV and still get ads? We were promised Ad free television for our month fee damnit!

Thus I could never support a service like this that has ads introduced along with a monthly fee at the offset. You put ads in, give us free product. You want us to pay for product, then no fucking adverts kthks!

This example, as well as advertisements in magazines, are relevant but may not be the best point. After all, print mags are having trouble surviving and networks are freaking out about people downloading shows via Bittorrent or using Tivos/DVRs to skip past ads. These are the old ways of monetization, when the Internet isn't what it is today.

It seems like today's mantra is more about getting as many eyeballs on your advertising/marketing and hoping more people buy the end-product. After all, the very videos and demos that are "exclusive" to Qore will probably end up on YouTube and other sites very soon, or perhaps legitimately show up on other game sites for free.

While I think it's interesting that Sony's chosen this way to try to monetize users, ultimately I don't think it's going to succeed because times have changed.
