What to do with an unwanted MGS4 and other PS3 advice

Not wanting Metal Gear Solid 4? The blasphemy!

I hope to get the MGS4 PS3 bundle next week, mainly for the 80gig system and the dualshock3 controller. Metal Gear Solid is not really my thing (played MGS2, attempted Twin Snakes), and I would like to have a different game instead (GTA4, Burnout, R&C, Uncharted). Any ideas as to how I go about switching MGS4 for another title? Options include:

Attempting to exchange the game for a different one with no receipt (not the most ethical solution)

Trade in the game to Gamestop or EBGames and take the loss (I doubt that i'll get any more for it than their usual trade in value (even though it'll be shrink wrapped).

Find someone to swap unopened MGS4 for other title (I live in Dallas but don't know anyone locally that is interested in MGS4)

Ebay/Craigslist (not an expert at either)

The other issue I have is how to set up my new PS3. I have a Sony 40" CRT HDTV (1080i) with one DVI input and two component inputs. Currently I have our Directv HDDVR using the DVI port (with a HDMI-DVI cord) and a PS2 and Gamecube using the components. If 1080i is the max resolution for my TV, does component vs. HDMI/DVI matter for the PS3? I could switch the PS3 to the DVI and use component port for the DVR if it'll make a difference, but the idea of rearranging the back of my huge TV doesn't sound fun.

You could sign up for Goozex and trade it on there:

    Site link: www.goozex.com

My referral (if you happen to go this route): http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=565099196314

You'll probably get about 1000 points for the game, which roughly equals $50 that you can use to trade for whatever other game that you want.

Not the best solution, but 100x better than going to Gamestop.

e: PM me or go to the Goozex thread in GnT to get any info on the service if you want.

You could go outside of a Gamestop and sell the game to someone for 5-10 bucks cheaper. Go there the day it comes out and you're bound to get a bite.

considering the response this game is generating.. you would be hard pressed to find a buyer. i know of 3 (one being me) that would probably take it.

This is probably the best solution. May not be ethical, but since it's still in the wrap they really shouldn't have any objections to it. Just go to Wal-Mart and return it. They do this stuff without receipt all the time. Tell them it was a gift in the mail and there was no receipt.

Some stores offer similar bundles i think. I saw one with GTA4, but im just not sure if its 80gb model.

Bundled items like this often come with the UPC modified in some way. Either it's a totally different code, or it's physically changed (hole punch or similar). Most retail stores are not supposed to accept returns on those types of items. However, if what you get is the same UPC, unmodified, and it's shrinkwrapped, I wouldn't feel bad about returning it somewhere. They'll be able to sell it easily in that condition.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

I will be pretty surprised if most major stores do this no-receipt thing because of the way their inventory systems work. The best solution is to find a friend who wants to buy the game, and have them buy you a game instead and trade.

Your best bet on the PS3 setup might be to get a receiver. The way I like to set this up is to have a receiver for my speakers that I plug all my devices (sound AND video) into. Then I have one video cable run from that receiver to the TV. That way, all you have to do is turn the TV to one input for any device, and then selectt the input on the receiver. I've always wondered if there's a technical negative downside to this...any AV freaks on here correct me if this is a bad idea.

To get the most bang for your buck, most places and people will treat the game the same whether it's opened or sealed, which means you may want to at least give it a shot before trading it off. Unless you secure a deal, of course.

Personally I'd suggest Goozex if you're interested in just doing it with little effort on your part (and Goozex won't care if it's opened, so you may want to try playing it before putting it up there), and Craigslist if you want something fast. With Craigslist you can simply post "Will trade unopened Metal Gear Solid 4 for [games]" and will probably get someone willing to meet you that night.

Won't it have a massive NOT FOR RESALE blurb on the front?

I doubt it. The stuff earlier about the changed/ruined ups bar code...that's what they would do.

just a heads up if you do trade it into Ebgames/GameStop take off the shrink wrap first. Policy says we have to deny any products brought in shrink wrapped.

This is probably the best option. Alternatively, make it a bit simpler and just sell it to your friend directly. I also like the idea of sitting within sight of a gamestop with a sign saying "MGS4 for sale - $X" where X is $5 less than gamestop's price. Just be honest about it and let them open up the game to make sure it is valid. If someone asks if you take credit cards, use Scrublet's method to barter the game.
