The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Levitation has been elevated from being pure science fiction to science fact, according to a study reported today by physicists.
In theory the discovery could be used to levitate a person
In earlier work the same team of theoretical physicists showed that invisibility cloaks are feasible.
Now, in another report that sounds like it comes out of the pages of a Harry Potter book, the University of St Andrews team has created an 'incredible levitation effects’ by engineering the force of nature which normally causes objects to stick together.
Professor Ulf Leonhardt and Dr Thomas Philbin, from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, have worked out a way of reversing this pheneomenon, known as the Casimir force, so that it repels instead of attracts.
Man, a break through this big that will help the field of nanotech is awesome, but they need to get back to me when they finally get around to making the hoverboards we all want.

Oh god, if this means I can fly I will be SO happy.
If this is a lie, I'm going to track you down BC and slit your throat with my dick.
Hey man I'm just the messenger.
These are the same dudes that believe they have proven invisibility cloaks to be a feasible thing.
It's like they're taking our child hood dreams and making them reality.

guys this is just stupid journalistic hype
the science is probably entirely valid but the press is making this sound like oh my god they've discovered levitation
guess what they haven't, been around for a while
use your fucking brains

For what else will we have?

Dru, I still have an inner child, and that inner child wants to believe. Truthfully, I completely understand that this is hyped and simplized beyond words so that it's grabby and eye catching, but on the inside, I just want to close my eyes and dream of flying through the blue sky on a sunny day, my fingers skating on the water of a pond below me.
And when I'm tired of that one, I'm gonna starting thinking about doing it in the air.
the cloak thing is old news and it didn't really make things invisible as it just kind of obscured what exactly was there with an obviously holographic looking image of what was on the other side of it
so you could still see that something was there because the light passing "through" it was distorted pretty noticably

And the earliest televisions didn't really transmit images, they transmitted blurry shapes vaguely reminiscent of the original image.

Bemis we're not being pessimistic we're pointing out the wild hype and lack of any substantial information in the article. I already said in an earlier post that the science was probably perfectly valid, it's just that this article completely blows it out of proportion and makes it sound like we'll have personal hovercars and be able to fly like superheroes any day now.

so while it would be the most awesome thing (so awesome) I won't get my hopes up for it any time soon

Forget that mess.
worked fine in Hitchhikers Guide
Really, it worked fine in a work of fiction.

any greater understanding of a natural principle can lead to technological advances, however slight they may start as
it's certainly nothing to be actively pessimistic about
but i like to believe everyone here is intelligent enough to understand that
perhaps an unrealistic hope
but like filler was saying, nothing wrong with a little woo woo science flying cars woo
There was an article talking about how flying carpets are totally plausible.
