Hey, I have a tin of old-fasioned hard candies from japan, in various fruit flavors. grape, pineapple. orange, melon, lemon, strawberry, and the one I'm asking about, hakka. The rest are written the english with katakana (eg; sutoroberi-, remon). I have no idea what a 'hakka' is, and I can't find it on google. Does anyone know what a 'hakka' is?

Could it be the Hakuto or Kaki? That's all I could find that's even similar, hakka is apparently a place

    What's it taste like?

well, the colour for it shown on the tin is white, and it tastes cool and crisp, similar to mint, but diffrent.

    You mean Sakuma drops?

One of the flavors is mint, and you didn't list mint, so... I'm guessing it's mint.

Unfortunately, I can no longer eat fruit drops because I start thinking about dead japanese children and crying.

Maybe I am cold, but I did not cry in that movie. It was sad, but...I dunno. Maybe it was the atmosphere I was in (Japanese class)

Yeah, I immediately thought of that movie too. Seeing that picture reaffirmed that notion

These are good? I've lived in Japan for years and never tried them. It might be Grave of The Fireflies trauma preventing me subconsciously.

Sakuma drops are the grave of the fireflies ones, these are Meiji fruit drops. They're like the kind of candies you find in glass jars at old-people houses, but slightly sweeter.

I'm pretty sure they can be found outside Japan. I remember an Asian grocery store near where I lived in Vancouver had them. And the Japanese are in the minority of the Asian population in the Vancouver area.

Does this classify as irony, something Japanese that can't seem to be readily found in Japan? (for sake of argument I keep forgetting to look really hard at the grocery)

You have to go somewhere old-fashioned and they have them. 7 11 probably have them but in a different package - something snazzier.

Found them today actually at the "dollar store" so to speak. Almost picked up a can but then I remembered I have to put metal in different garbage than other stuff, and its only once every twice a week that it comes, so I opted out, but maybe next time heh.

Ah come on - don't let can-gomi put you off.

Just rinse the cans and stick them in a plastic bag, or be sneaky and give 7 11 a 'present'

    100yen shops ftw!
