HUZZAH! Civilization: Revolution demo hits Xbox Live

edited July 2008 in Games and Technology
I searched and searched, but could not find a thread. No thread, even though the demo for Civilization: Revolution hit Xbox Live yesterday? This made me sad, because Civilization is coming to the current round of consoles.

And I couldn't be happier.

The Civ series is one of my favorites, replayable like few others games, addictive to the point of staying up till 4 am on work nights, and streamlined for a simple yet deep gameplay experience. I be lovin' it, always.

civ04.jpg

Yes, it looks more cartoony that previous Civ games, but I'm happy to report that after playing it for two hours last night it's pretty much Civ through and through. A bit of streamlining here and there, yes. Touches of simplifying for the console, yes. But at its core, it's Civ.

If you've played and enjoy previous games, from buildings to units to its overall approach you'll feel right at home.

civ02.jpg

It was damn awesome to form an army of troops, hop in a galley, sail across a bay and break my peace treaty with the Zulus. It was nice to taunt Alexander the Great. Getting the next etchnological advancement was just as addictive as ever.

I'm torn on the micromanaging. Some of that has been simplified. Instead of manually directing your workers, for instance, it's done automatically based on what you tell your city to focus on -- gold, food, industry, science, etc.

Also, I couldn't figure out how to build roads that weren't strictly from city to city. I hope you can build them anywhere, because building out a huge infrastructure is a great way to head to victory.

The science stuff seems well done. The tech tree takes some getting used to, but once you learn to navigate it it's okay.

civ03.jpg

The battles worked fine. I hope there is an option to increase the scroll speed. I found that once my empire got larger, navigating the map manually was s l o w. (There are directional pad hotkeys to help with thus.)

All in all, it was awesome. I played for hours, and will do so again tonight.

Civ coming to a console. Yay! Now I can get away from the computer, veg out in front of the TV, stay up way to late, and not get a lot of work done the next day.

The demo appears to give you a limited amount of turns, so you can take your sweet time, but it will cut you off after X number of moves. I didn't catch how many it was, but you pretty much get to play through most of the first age. I had a decent assortment of troops when it ran out and was starting to build some of the better early buildings - cathedrals and libraries and all that.

In the demo you get to choose from two Civs (the Romans and the Egyptians), but play against several more (I saw the Zulus and Greeks, did not meet the fifth). You can cycle through all the civs in the full game just to see who's in, so that's cool. And a partial version of the Civlopedia is also in there.

Catherine of Russia is, errrr ... she's rather well endowed.

Anyway, yeah, totally cool demo. I ended up being up late playing it. This game is MINE.

I was playing this quite a bit last night.

I've always loved 4X games, and the Civ series is one of my favorites. I was a bit hesitant about Civ on a console, but after playing with it for a while I've made the following opinions.

    Pros:
    Nice Graphics
I dont miss my keyboard (Its still really easy to get around)
I like what they've done with the Nation bonuses
I kinda like the way improvements/workers operate now
    It's goddamn Civilization!

    Cons:
I fucking hate those avatars. I have a regular size TV and sometimes they cut off the text. Also, I dont need some dibshit mumbling simese to me as I burn my neighbors.
I miss my mouse (I hate scrolling)
I kinda hate the way improvements/workers operate now

All in all, great game, can't wait for the retail.

    Final thought:
I've always laughed at the ethnocentricism involved in making the Americans a race. They didnt even show up until just before the 1800s.

EDIT: Game ends at 1250 AD I believe.

No one said it was. Besides, it doesn't need to be. It's a version for console players to play; it's a version that you can play away from your PC; it's a version people who don't play PC games can play.

Hell, it's a turn-based strat on a modern console. For that ALONE it's a damn fine thing to hit the market.

I've played almost every Civ game to date, big fan of the series, huge Sid Meier fan, and I was very pleased with this demo. I was scared it was going to be way dumbed down and would resembled Civ in name only, but thankfully it retained a lot of what I loved about recent iterations of the series. All the core gameplay elements were there, and that "just one turn" thing was still a huge hook.

And I get to play it while sprawled out on my couch. Considering I spend 10+ hours a day in front of a computer thanks to my job, that's very welcome indeed.

    I'm in.

Ive never played a Civilization game in my life before this, but i downloading this last night and I've already played it through 4 or 5 times. Really never thought i would be into a game like this but I'm really getting caught up in the whole just one more move thing, times just been flying by...

I think that the positive of the game being simplified is that hopefully there will be a half decent online community and the game seems like it would be a blast online. Wish it supported more than 4 players though, can imagine some insane 16 player games but i guess that would defeat the point of simplifying it...

Yeah, I like the combat too. I'm curious what the later units will fight like (tanks and such). The rest of the game is pretty mediocre, is this going to be a full retail game? If it's on XBLA I might buy it.

Oh, and are there no open border treaties? The only thing on the diplomacy screen is tech trading. Caesar built a city blocking off half the continent, and I'm too busy crushing the Aztecs to deal with him right now.

From what I've heard, it's a lot friendlier to multiplayer play than Civ 4 thanks to its more streamlined gameplay so that'll be a big advantage on the XBox 360 & PS3 version (not so much on the Wii version). And well, the DS version is freakin' portable Civilization without the cost or hassle of a powerful laptop.

Yes, I'm seriously considering picking up 2 versions of essentially the same game. Then again, Civilization IV is easily my favorite game ever.

I really like the tech tree in this one, because if you are the first to discover a tech you almost always gain a small bonus. Like extra culture or +1 production in every city, or get a certain building linked to that tech instantly build in your capital.
The culture part seems pretty well done too, one of my cities got captured because I had lots of Great Persons and resources but no army. So everyone was trying to beat me up. But when they captured one of my cities, I got it back a few turns later thanks to culture! And then that city got me another one of their cities!

There are bugs though, when I captured that city back I got an 'Lightning Warrior' which for some reason was invisible, but after a few turns he got visible again. Not before beating up a village of barbarians though, which was fun to see because they just fell down and hit some air.

So I played the demo, its actually not that bad. I like the visual style and its Civ, so if you liked Civ you'll like this.

Except for one thing. The avatars. This has been echoed by other people in the thread, but they are way, way annoying. The first thing you need to do when turning on the demo is turn the sound of all leaders and advisors to 0. The mumbling is even freaking worse than it was on the original StarFox. Seriously people, use actual speech or just use text. Not mumbling.

Yes, it has online multiplayer. As I understand it, MP games can take 1-3 hours, roughly. The one down side (and this is a big oversight): No saving MP games in progress, so once you start, you're in. But it does indeed have head-to-head online, and that's awesome. Two of my friends are already committed to buying it for that alone.

Finally. A shitty version of a game I already have! Four times!

I've clocked a hit load of time on Civ 4 and I can say this with certainty: This isn't Civ 4.

It's changed a few of the dynamics (City Placement threw me for a loop) and some of the balance feels weird. I suspect this is because this is another take on the Civ framework. You're going to find the same mix of gameplay elements but the exact fashion they interact with each other is different now.

I'm not certain what is to stop you from just spamming cities across the map, it worked well in the demo. I suspect Culture might have something to do with this but I'm not positive.
    Zek wrote: »

Another note: The developers have promised the only difference between versions are the graphics. The mechanics of the game are identical across versions.

As a player of Civ since Civ 1, I have to say that this is definitely Civ. Multiplayer may actually work this time. One thing I miss, however, is the lack of offline coop play via hotseat or splitscreen. That would be a nice patch addition. I don't really care if my buddy on the couch beside me looks at my moves. He is doomed nevertheless.

Damn, you got up to riflemen? I haven't done that yet.

In my various demos plays I've been able to bump off every capital except the Greeks. I always seem to get to them too late and can't get through their damn hoplites.

The best I've done in the time span of the demo is take down two capitals and start my assault on a third. And I've found two interesting items while exploring the sea, a pyramid that grants you the pyramid wonder automatically, and some temple kind of thing. Cool. I like the idea of exploration having some meaning beyond scouting the map.

I stomped out the Aztecs, but the Zulus killed an army and stole one of my bases, and I turned off the game in dissapointment. I never played Civ 4, but I like this better than Civ 3. It seems to have almost the same level of depth, with a much, much simpler interface. But does anyone else think that the way territory is handled is a bit strange?
