I'd love to get into FFT, so I bought it new off Amazon.
Problem is, it's a bitch to find working PSone memory cards anywhere. Anyone know a decent place?
Just get FFT:the war of the lions on the psp. Its basicly the same game except, theirs cutscenes and the translation doesn't suck
EDIT: are there any more Ivalicce alliance games in the works, or is this it for now
There are precisely 2 games for the PSP I've ever wanted to buy (FFT being one of them). I have as yet not been able to justify blowing $170 (plus all the other crap you need) for 2 games.
Battles move far too slowly. I have no hope of this issue being solved in any Final Fantasy Tactics; it's practically become a series staple.
The game looks gorgeous, by any standards - handheld or home console. The music is great, too.
Battles move far too slowly.
The refined interface is fantastic. Turn orders and statistics are always on hand. My only gripe with the interface is, yes, the speed. There's no way to turn off menu animations.
Battles move far too slowly. Fucking hell. Italics!
If it is a game somewhere in the Tactics line (TO, FFT, TO:KoL, FFTA, FFTA2) then expect the battles to go slowly.
Learn to flank and take advantage of terrain, and when you are higher level with better equipment and moves then the battles will fly* by.
*Battles will still take awhile, this isn't FE or Disgaea. But you'll be too enamored to care.

After I had Doublesword or Doublecast on several of my characters from FFTA1, only boss battles ever took more than a couple of turns.
Also I am probably going to buy this after my test tonight. Stupid summer class. Also I'm really hungry. But that has more to do with me having a 10:00 class and then a 6:00 class and having 5 hours to kill between the two, and of course not wanting to drive because parking is like 4 bucks and all eating facilities being outside of walking distance.

Yes, but if you look at your file to see how many hours you have played to get to that point well...
The truely hardcore FFTA players spend about ten hours getting that stupid weapon steal dagger before mission three. I did that once and my oh my, never again.
Admittedly, that was more of a reference to the latter half of the game. Still, I only felt like the battles were long for the first 1/8 of the game or so. Once each character had moved beyond the starting weapons and had picked up a second class (which takes what? 5 hours max?) the battles seemed to go by much quicker.
If this wasn't bad enough, when enemies fail to comply to these rules your reward isn't awarded either, making it even harder to achieve your goal with all the possible rewards.
Man, what? The rest I can stomach, but that is just a big FUCK YOU.
Turns out this is all lies. I've just finished a battle where the ice element was outlawed; the enemy, of course, opened by using Blizzard. Nothing happened. I still got the rewards.
Enemies can't fuck up the laws (with the occasional exception for a few story missions). Laws are only broken by player controlled characters (which means that "guest" characters also will not get you nailed for lawbreaking). Also, the rewards for not breaking the laws are never *huge*. It's usually an item or two, and while early on it might be a new item, often it's something you already have one or two of, and never a unique item unattainable elsewhere.
Also, there is no permadeath. If you break the law, it only prevents you from reviving characters during the battle. Post-battle, everyone is fine.

So glad to finally be playing this in English. Loved the import, but being able to read the dialogue, descriptions and (god forbid) instructions for missions makes it even better.
Despite the fairly shallow story, this is definitely another gem of a translation with dialogue and descriptions of a far more literary nature than one might expect in a videogame.
But will TRU actually stock the game before the sale ends?
Details: Offer valid only while supplies last and not applicable to canceled orders due to out-of-stock merchandise. Order must be confirmed by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on June 28, 2008 to receive discount.
It looks like the game doesn't ship until the 26th, so currently the 2 for 1 deal doesn't apply. I'm going to wait and see if it'll show up by Saturday.
I am bit bummed that Etrian Odyssey II isn't showing up in TRU. I was hoping to get that, along with this, and Rondo of Swords as part of my deal. I think that's enough JRPGs to last a few months. :P
Argh, if the enemy takes over one of your characters with charm or something and they break the laws it counts as is if you had done it
that's really frustrating
Yeah, charm is a bitch. But really, if there's one thing I learned on my first run through the game, it's that you don't miss much by breaking the law. While it's good to not do it if you can help it, it's not really worth replaying half of a long battle to get a third mediocre bow (or whatever random treasure you might find)
When you get in a battle where the law says "No attacking an enemy 2 or more squares from you" (I don't know the exact text of the law, but that's the idea), keep in mind that this also includes knockback from critical hits.
If you knock your opponent back, it counts as having attacked someone 2 squares away, and you get nailed for that.

Wow, that sucks. Atleast the rewards arn't once in a lifetime deals. I'm pretty happy with the law system as of right now.

The manual mentioned you can use the stylus in like a footnote. The d-pad is the primary method of control here.
I got through the tutorial last night and then I had to go to bed. I also got the new PA book yesterday and I'm also 3 days way from re-beating TWEWY....so much stuff.

Yeah, normally I wouldn't worry about it, but in this case it was during a clan trial, which you auto-fail if you break the law.

I'm just about there too

Okay, I've been playing for quite a while and I'm starting to get desperate. I'm getting ready to start the "Now That's a Fire!" quest and the only person I've recruited into my group is the mandatory annoying thief girl. Is that normal? I'm really itching to start some custom characters, but I need different ones from the chump starters they've stuck to me. I know that recruiting was pretty random in FFTA, but this seems like it's taking extraordinarily long.

I can't say exactly how long it took me in the import, but it's definitely a good ways into the game before you can start recruiting. I'd wager the guide will answer this better, but it seems like you have to have a certain level of clan ability before they start showing up. So, if you're ignoring the clan trials, try doing as many as you can to bump up your skills.
[2.12] I don't like my team members, how do I replace them?
The recruitment quest respawns fairly quickly and is the most reliable way
recruit which job you want (as long as you know exactly how to answer).
Otherwise, you can find recruitment events at certain locations depending on the
month. For both the recruitment quest and the recruitment events, the race you
get is based on the month.

You can often send characters on missions, but IIRC, they get no experience from it, and I'd rather play the missions myself, so I don't do that.
edit: The game shipped yesterday and should be in stores today. I don't know why the topic dates it as 6/26, but that is incorrect.
I know that and you know that, but Toys 'R Us doesn't know that. :P

Darn it, that's the name that I picked. I briefly considered choosing some sort of swear for my clan name but I knew my choice would haunt me.
How soon can I recruit people? I need a third Hume ASAP to make into my precious Blue Mage killing machine.
