This Game has no Name (Square + The Ring + Cursed NES RPG + DS)
Yes, this is a DS horror game about an evil cursed 8-bit Dragon Quest clone that kills people who play it. I can only hope Square takes a chance on it and localizes it for English speaking audiences; the fact that they released The World Ends with You (an RPG about Shibuya for goodness sake) fills me with some hope.
I'm guessing those "graphical glitches" shown in the trailer are intentional?
This game does seem pretty spooky...
Those glitches are a super nice touch imo. Very interesting premise, though it might turn out to be a boring point-and-click adventure thing. (I'm not saying all point-and-click adventures are boring, but some most certainly are, and this one could go either way)
I'm hoping this will get a US release but personally I think the premise would be better suited to a console just to better convey the atmosphere and give you the classic horror movie/ game setup. IMO its lot easier to get scared by images on a tv than a handheld

Yeah the gaming world needs more games about made up video games with mythical properties. Like dot hack and stuff.
And the music in the last few seconds is pretty good, too. If that just sprang up randomly while I was playing the game, I would probably quit for a few minutes.
Been looking at more info and evidently the game breaks the 4th wall a lot including actually having you play the cursed game. Other interesting things is that Square has programmed a positional sound system for the game and recommends wearing headphones
I do love how they barely tweak the classic Dragon Warrior (Quest) song for the game. However, at the end of that trailer, with the guy humming the tune, that just made me laugh. As soon as I figured out it was a person's voice, it hit me that I had hummed almost that exact song when I was bored, so rather than making me think about creepy people stalking me humming that song, it made me think about being bored. I kind of doubt that that was the intentional effect.
On the other hand, I did really enjoy Dragon Warrior I, so if the "game within the game" is at least coherent I know that my $40 will at least buy me a memory of those good ol' times.
Is it wrong that I look at that and think, 'well, there goes the battery life'?
The DS always drains power at a constant rate.
Actually, no, it doesn't. Wifi certainly lowers the charge at a faster rate and so do certain games.
Its especially noticable with wifi as the light will turn red when there are 5 minutes left of charge at the current consumption rate so when you go out of wifi immediately after it goes back to green
I've never played a Dragon Quest like 2D RPG. But this is experimental enough to make me interested.
I wonder if the protagonist will find a portable version of the game at some point. They could show it in a classic GameBoy design styled DS, with grayscale graphics!

From the trailers we can see that they do find a portable with it but it is a ds so its just nes style

I just watched the trailer again, but didn't catch it. Where does the ds show up?
They could show it in a classic GameBoy design styled DS, with greenscale graphics!
Edit: Did anyone ever play Oscar on the Amiga?
It had some really funny items, like a Game Gear that when you picked it up, made it go into "Game Gear colour mode", and a Gameboy that made it go into "Gameboy colour mode"
If this game turns out well, it has the potential to really get into people's heads.
I remember one Internet post from a guy who, two weeks after watching The Ring, turned off his TV when the phone rang. His dog then stepped on the remote while he was reaching for it, turning on the television. He ran screaming from his apartment.
I'm more apprehensive about this game's potential to imprint onto my subconscious the perception of my DS as an instrument of death.

If only I could read the text in that trailer
Seriously?
Yeah, that was my reaction as well.

Then thou dies!
I never asked for this!
But you'll die!
But isn't that the dream of everyone on this forum? To go out with controller in hand?
Also, and at the premise.

No one said it was original

The twist is the power goes out when you are at the end of the game and you loose your saves.
I never asked for this!
I'm a little disappointed they decided to go the 3D route with the adventure segments though, but the story actually sounds pretty good for once.

It reminds me of Hotel Dusk which brings nothing but hope into my head for this.

The graphics are amazing for a ds game

no I think that is a fair assumption but then again this is the type of game you play in your bedroom with the lights off and your ds plugged in
If by "controller" you mean "two hot women".

Oh... Right of course.
And by "in hand" I mean "in bed with".

To be fair, it's not a Dragon Quest like RPG, it's a game about a Dragon Quest like RPG.

Also I wonder if the SE groove can continue.
TWEWY, FFTA2, FFIV DS, DQ IV-VI and this? Sounds pretty good to me.
