I've got AVG running on a few comps, and now they've gone and decided to force an upgrade that isn't free (you guys probably know what I mean). basically, it's "update and pay us, or no more AVG for you"
So what's a good replacement antivirus that is free (or maybe not free, if it's cheap enough) that is as good and easy to use as AVG (at least, IMO)?
Yeah the free edition is still working fine. I'd really recommend sticking with it if at all possible, because in my experience no other free program comes close to AVG in performance and system-friendliness.
Speaking of the new AVG 8, how do I disable the spyware and maybe some of the other new components? I just want anti-virus. Fucker keeps deleting my cookies cause some have tracker stats in them. Really annoying to keep logging in to a billion sites.
I've had terrible luck with Avast. On Vista it constantly escalates permissions, and when I had it installed on my XP desktop it eventually destroyed itself and refused to start. So on the whole it hasn't done much to prove its worth to me yet, but then neither has AVG.

I'm using Vista with Sp1 and haven't had any problems, maybe they fixed whatever your problem was. I also had no problem with it and XP.
I vastly prefer avast... it seems to catch waaaay more than avg ever does

I'm thinking of giving AVG a try, but that means removing Norton Systemworks and Antivirus, so I think I'm gonna download the removal tool to get rid of them. I've just created a restore point in case something goes wrong, but I'm still a little hesitant. What are the chances that getting rid of Norton is going to mess up my computer?
I used it on my parent's computer and it worked fine and didn't mess anything up, but they only had Norton Internet Security and Antivirus, and I know Systemworks has a bunch of shit for maintaining your system, so I don't know if Systemworks has a bigger chance of messing things up.

Wait, what are you doing where you actually run into virii on a routine basis? o_O
pff, regular basis my ass. But avast has found 3 trojans in the last year or so on my comp (my boyfriend borrows it if it's on and his isn't...) whereas avg found nothin (yes I have both yes I realize this is stupid/redundant and yes I'm too lazy to getting around to uninstalling avg just yet)
Clamwin is a good free anti-virus. Another good free AV is Comodo.
I don't bother with AVG or Avast! as they both were too much trouble for me. In the last 7 years I've only had one virus and that was under Avast!'s watch. AVG was just a pain, I don't like the UI. Although it has been awhile since I've used it. But I'm not switching from NOD32 just to give them a try.
But I'm not switching from NOD32 just to give them a try.
i was problem-solving my sisters new laptop the other day and was impressed by AVG combining firewall, anti-virus and spyware detection all in one package and briefly considered switching from NOD32 and Kiero Personal Firewall as I'd probably save a bit of money. Then I realised that I've been using NOD and Kiero for about five years now and in that time have never had any problems, either from virii/trojans or from the programs themselves interfering with other applications so why on earth would I want to risk messing with a good thing?
I really don't like AVG and Avast, I mean, as far as free apps go they're fine but from what I remember the GUI was a retarded, unintuitive hell -- it was perfectly passable but how some things were handled just seemed so dumb.
NOD32 is probably the only one I'd spend money on.
AVG is still free but when I was updating to 8.0 I noticed they made it as difficult as possible to find the link for the free version (surprising eh? :P). My advice is ignore the pop up telling you to update and google AVG free, that will give you the link to the free one far more easily than navigating the AVG site.
I really liked v2, but I installed the new v3 on my girlfriend's PC when I rebuilt it a month or two ago, and I greatly dislike the change. The new version is insanely naggy compared to v2. Its rules for accepting network traffic or asking you to Ok it seem waaaay too granular, such that I need to Ok multiple variations of traffic from one application within the span of a few seconds before Comodo will finally shut up and do its thing. I suppose this is meant to be more secure, but the end result is that it just makes me want to downgrade to v2 or replace it with something else.

v8.0 of AVG has an overhaul of the UI and it looks all fancy and friendly now, which is a plus for the people I give it to when I work on their comps, but a pain for me. It uses more memory now than it used to. It has new spyware & linkscanner modules that seem to have no real ability of disabling. And I still haven't figured out how to stop it from deleting my cookies.

Unless you're using a laptop on the go you can set it not to look for new networks. I also turned the Defense section off since I have Vista with UAC. After that it's been enjoyable to use. I will agree whole hardely that Comodo is the best Firewall.
Comodo's Anti-malware works great as well. I'm looking forward to when their Anti-virus comes out of beta or at least until it's recognized by MS security center.

I switched to NOD32 from McAfee. After their UI change in version 2007 I think it was I decided to start shopping the free alternatives. After a few months I reinstalled due to getting a Virus from Avast! and then the annoying UI of AVG thought it did clean up the Virus. Upgrading to Vista Ultimate soon after it launched got me to finally ditch McAfee in favor of the only AV that worked on Vista at that time, NOD32.
Since both XP & Vista have a security center I don't mind having mix & match from different companies anymore. I've been happy with Comodo's firewall since both Sygate and then Kerio were bought out. Right now I'm waiting to see what Comodo's Anti-virus will be like. That may get me to switch or at least recommend it as a free anti-virus since Comodo has proven themselves to me.
AntiVir from Avira is the supergreatest. Small footprint, unobtrusive, catches almost everything, and pretty barebones. It also doesn't octopus your system, which has always been a big deal for me.

A la Kung Fu, I've been reading other reports that the latest version of AVG is actually worse than the previous versions, in that it takes up much more system resources and doesn't do as good of a job in actually protecting you against and detecting viruses. They've also completely upped the ante on bloatware...
I used to love AVG, but I switched to Avast about a year ago and haven't looked back. The only thing I miss are the regularly scheduled system scans, which made it perfect for the everyday user. Avast has real-time scanning, but a full system scan has to be manually started, which isn't so great for people who can't even be bothered to update Windows...

This is also why I switched to Avast.

It's unsupported, yadda yadda yadda, et cetera, et cetera.
If it's updating fine for you, there's probably not an issue, but AVG could, in theory, cut that off at any point.
