So I'm currently in a mini vacation, and are thinking of taking a bottle of mexican liquor back to Dallas with me. The flight would be from El Paso, Tx to Dallas, so I don't think I have to pay any duty correct?
But more importantly, am I allowed to take liquor? Can it be a carry on, or does it have to be checked in? Do I declare it when I check in?
And finally, what's the best way to ensure that the bottles will make it in one piece?
I don't think you can take liquid (except very small amounts) through security so you will have to check it. You can however buy liquor after security in most airports.
Unless you buy it in the duty free at the airport, it has to be checked. This includes flights with layovers. If you buy it at the first airport you are supposed to give it to the flight crew at your layover before you get on the second flight.
In Canada the amount of liquor you can bring back without paying tax is dependent on how long you are out of the country. I don't know about the US.
Everywhereasign on
"What are you dense? Are you retarded or something? Who the hell do you think I am? I'm the goddamn Batman!"
A lot of international airports have duty free shops past the security checkpoint, so if you don't want to pay tax on it and you don't want to check it, this is the way to go (assuming that the airport actually DOES have a duty free past the screening area). If you buy it and then bring it with you to the airport you need to check that bad boy in your luggage.
I recently flew from CO to VA with 2 bottles of wine and a bottle of whiskey. I packed the wine in a shoebox and stuffed the shoebox with socks and um...underthings....the whiskey was already in an egg carton type box.
I secured everything down with the little straps on the inside of the suitcase and everything made it home A-OK (and this was after having a 3 hour layover in DFW).
