I saved a kitten yesterday

So yesterday after a job interview I was on the way to meet my girlfriend for lunch. I had stopped by the bank to deposit a freelance job check and then turned onto HWY 90 to head over the Diner we eat at often.

About halfway there there was a kitten in the middle of the road. Not the middle of the road, but the middle of the right lane. I ran my car over over the top of him, as I didn't have adequate time to react without running a tire over him. Hilariously, I was the phone with my sister at the time, to see if she wanted to meet us for lunch, when it went something along the lines of "Yeah, Renee do you want toOH MY GOD THERE'S A KITTEN IN THE ROAD I'LL CALL YOU BACK!", and then the phone flew off into the back seat.

I pulled over onto the side of the road and scooped him up, scraped all the junk off the passenger seat and then called my sister back to get her to meet me at the animal shelter. The asphault couldn't have been all to comfortable for the poor thing. He looked weak but he was alert and was meowing occasionally, so he couldn't have been too bad off. When I was almost to the shelter he started to get up and try to walk off the seat but I had to shove him back. As soon as we got him to the lady at the shelter she fed him from a bottle and wiped the dried blood from around his eyes.

mapuv5.jpg

Left-most red dot is where the kitty was found. Right dot was where I pulled over.

Poor thing was dehydrated, and the lady at the shelter said he couldn't have been more than a few weeks old.

Crappy cell-phone picture of said cat:

kittypicturerc4.jpg

None of you probably care but I just felt proud of myself and I felt like I needed to share. My sister and I are going to check up on him on Monday to see how he's doing...assuming he didn't pass sometime over the weekend.

We could make this thread about animal rescues or something.

I saved some baby raccoons from a flooding storm drain one time. Cutest things ever, but I don't think they knew I was saving them.

    I had many bite/scratch marks.

What about making it into an animal control thread as well? I hate to see things like this, and it seems like the best way to prevent it is effective population control. I admittedly don't know enough about control methods, but is Bob Barker on the right side of things?

I can't help but think of what would have happened if it was in the road for something as short as just another 5 minutes.

My dad and I saved a possum and her...baby possums after some cocksucker threw them into a garbage can and threw the lid on them in the middle of summer. And all of my family's cats have been strays. They have five of them at the moment.

I saved a turtle that was crossing the road once. Does that count for anything? I'm not even certain where it came from as I'm pretty sure Connecticut's not a big turtle habitat.

I saw a kitten on the side of the road once and didn't save it, because I don't remember why, I think I was in a hurry or whatever. Anyway on my way back home I saw the very same kitten killed trying to run across the road. I felt like such a terrible person.

I still kind of do, actually.

the older dog I have right now my mom found living outside my school. she was almost hit by a car (very very young at the time, weeks old if not days, not sure how young dogs can really be on their own at all) but my mom got her, took her to a shelter overnight, and she's been with us ever since.

why does your kitten get to live but mine is deigned fit to die an ignoble death by hot asphault?

While it's not a very interesting story, I might as well make my de-lurking first post here something that makes me look nice through proxy.

While over at my girlfriend's unit late last year, we heard a cat at her door and assumed it was her snarky old thing. She got up to let her in, and in walked a black, wide-eyed 'teenage' cat with a tail so bushy it looked as wide as her body. One that we'd never seen before.

We got the story from the others in the block of units (in her specific block of four, just adjacent from a bunch more on the same land, we're all pretty much friends) .

Drug addict over dosed. Some friend or relative was gonna take the thing in, but apparently didn't. Aside from grief, they may have done so because she turned out to be so pregnant she was about to drop her kitteny-load when she was de-sexed (which resulted in a kitten-abortion, which I would have felt guilty over but, as the vet said, we sorta have enough cats kicking around as is). Everyone around there more or less took care of her, fed her and chipped in for her operation, but when I moved in to my current place, my housemate abduucted her so she lives with us now.

She is one fat cat these days (especially with her winter coat), but she's gorgeous.

Here's a cute picture of her relaxing in our birdbath (which is more in-focus than she is, but I'm a shoddy photographer).

Two of my cats I got from animal shelters as kittens, the third I found wandering around lost. AND DECLAWED. Man, I hope she got out by accident because it would take a complete asshole to dump a declawed cat (well, or any cat, but you know what I mean.) I put up "cat found" posters and everything but no one ever claimed her.

Then I tried to rehome her via Petfinder.com 's classified ads and got about twenty Nigeria scam offers. The best one was the one that kept refering to my "dog." God knows what would've happened to the cat if I'd actually fallen for that crap. :x I ended up keeping her.

My dog, she's deceased now but we got her from a shelter as a puppy . . . Someone had left her and her two sisters in a cardboard box on the side of the highway, in the middle of nowhere. :x

    Edit for pics:

I found my cat out on the street in the middle of the night, when he was maybe just a bit younger than the kitten in the photo up in the OP. He and his sister were wandering around, scared as hell, and probably wouldn't have lasted the night.

About a year or two ago there was a stray cat that would approach us and meow loudly, but if we came near it would back off. Presumably it was begging for food. My mom decided to feed the cat, even though my dad hated cats (he's grown to like them since). I looked out the window one day and it turned out the cat we started feeding had a family of kittens with her. We basically saved a whole family of cats.

One of said kittens wound up having 6 more of her own in my sisters' bathroom, and while their mother was wild, we wound up raising the kittens ourselves, so they turned out to be pretty rad house cats. We had to give 5 of them away though, because that's just too goddamn many cats (and also our neighbors had complained).

    Let's see, kitten stories.

Both of my cats came from the Humane Society, lovable little critters.

    For the cats I've found:

1 declawed female, ended up taking her to the shelter because she wanted to eat my cat.

1 male kitten wandering around my apartment complex, kept him until he shat on my bed... then I gave him away to a guy at work that wanted a cat and I hated. I think he ended up giving the kitten to someone in his family because the little guy liked chewing on speaker wires. >.>

1 male kitten at my shop on an Air Force base... kept him for a little while then gave him away to a friend, who didn't neuter him until the kitten started spraying... particularly in his face. I ended up taking that cat off to the shelter when he went to Korea... mainly because I really didn't need three cats, and he was spraying in my house, despite being neutered. I was sad about that, as I really hated having to give him up because his owner was a doink. -_-

The last one is the saddest, someone found a litter of kittens in an old barrel on the same Air Force base, not far from where my husband worked. They were the cutest, most adorable things... but they would hiss at you no matter what. Never clawed at you, always sweet acting, just always hissing.

Turns out the poor things had gotten into some jet-fuel, and ended up being put down because they'd burned their throats from it and were getting sick.

Speaking of cats and eyes, one of our cats that my uncle rescued from the middle of the road has no eyes. We took her to the vet and she was apparently either born without them, or had some sort of infection after birth that kept them from developing. Other than that though, she's a perfectly healthy, normal cat and gets around just fine. The only thing she can't do is go down stairs. She's figured out the up part, but can't work out how to get back down.

I have kind of a bad story. A short one.

On the way to work a few years ago, I came across a large turtle on the road. I was going too fast to stop, so I had to swerve to try and "straddle" the creature.

    I misjudged.

    *bump*

    *bump*

    Me: "AAAAAHHHH OH GOD NO"

I looked in the rearview mirror, only to see the turtle cracked in half right down the middle of the shell.

    The image still haunts me.

My family has always been more partial to dogs (my mom hates cats, the rest of just just prefer dogs). But my brother and his wife were in the process of moving and they found four newborn kittens abandoned near their apartment and tried to save them. Only one survived, but (despite attempts to give her away) they still have her. It might just be because I have only had limited exposure, but I am thinking of getting a cat when I get to move to my own apartment again.

Anyway, obligatory picture - this is the only one I have, and the source is stuck on a hard drive in a now-defunct PC:

All of my mom's cats are rescued strays that either just walked into her house or she kidnapped, except for one.

    Yeah.

The first cat that i remember her having, and had for a few years before we were born, was kidnapped. Apparently the neighborhood kids always kept the cat tied with a wire to the car in their yard, and it was always outside.

So one day she went at night and took it.

    It lived to be 21.

The cat I just had to put to sleep (if you read a lot of H/A) just walked into my grandma's house.

Another cat she has right now named Skank (officially Clarice) just walked into her current house right before a harsh winter, and has been there since.

The other current cat she has she took from a friend my dad (her ex). A purebred Russian Blue. That headbutts people. And is a hair shedding machine.

Since the one just had to be put to sleep, everyone is just waiting for a new stray to stop by..
