Currently I use 4, one which is the one which just shows pictures, another one that displays all of my newsfeeds, another one that displays the current weather and the day of the week and the month and another one that shows the amount of space on my hard drives. But now I'm looking for a simple To Do list, is there anything like this? I just hate the one that comes with Windows, since it only displays one task at a time..is there any application out there that displays several To Do items at the same time?
Beacons of practicality, both. But you could save the sidebar space by simply loading Wikipedia and Dictionary.com into your list of Firefox search engines.

A good suggestion. I only have them on my sidebar at work (I only use the thing at work) as I do quite a bit of writing, often without a browser window even open... having instant access is pretty useful.
Also, I can't bring myself to use the sidebar on a single screen; a Konfabulator/OS X style hide and bring forward key would be great.
I've also looked into making my own gadgets; mostly web app-type forms, but it doesn't seen too difficult, even for one of my very limited ability. Anyone ever put one together?
I have a CPU/Ram meter, HDD space monitor, weather, remote desktop launcher, and a post-it-note type app. I used to use a few more, but for how often I use them, those are the only ones I still find useful, although I do admit i haven't gone through the directory for new ones in a long time.
I had it running for a while, used it for calendar, photos, applauncher, remote desktop (work), and notepad. Then I realized, I can click the time for a calendar, I never sit and look at the photos, I'd rather have all my icons in a nice, always-on-top quicklaunch on my taskbar, and Win-R, N will give me notepad faster than Win-Space and clicking for a new note (that and it was slightly buggy).
I wish (and maybe they have?) MS would support it more with Outlook functionality (full exchange app support?) and create a fully working (applauncher gave me some problems) quicklaunch app for it. If GMail came out with their own app it would be nice as well. The ones I tried before never worked as well for me.
Oh, and do you guys ever use the links directory trick? Create a shortcut in your start menu folder in explorer to a folder, then copy that link to the Links taskbar folder and it creates an explorable menu on your taskbar to your folders/files in that shortcut. I have my personal folder linked there and with a few mouse movements I can go to docs, pictures, movies, etc. It's pretty nice for quick browsing.
ya, I just click the start menu and actually click on "Documents" when I need to go to my documents. moving the mouse an extra centimeter doesn't matter that much to me.
I use Windows Live photo gallery to manage my photos, so I don't even go into the pictures folder.

True, I just found it as a pretty neat feature. I use Adobe Photoshop Gallery to handle my pics, but I still like to browse through my pictures manually sometimes to e-mail them or something.
I have my sidebar set to always be on top. Screen real estate isn't as big of a commodity as it used to be.
True, though I have a 14" laptop screen, so reducing that further isn't really an option to me. If I had Vista on my home PC with the 22" I could probably leave it always on top.

This has become one of the first things I do upon a new installation, with the Classic Start Menu. Then, to further save taskbar space, have all my program icons in there too, with a separator.
In RocketDock you can download a Stacks applet that lets you browse the contents of a linked folder without opening an Explorer window. It's a neat alternative trick.
EDIT: Beaten.

I want something like this so bad, but I can't seem to get it to work.
This is what I'm talking about, not really "pretty" but it's quite functional.
Cactus: You have to open up your start menu folder (as the rules for this folder create the proper shortcut somehow) and then right-click and create shortcut. Point the shortcut to a folder you want to have, and you can test it to make sure it works by opening up the start menu and browsing it there like you would normally.
Once it works, cut and past it into the taskbar links folder, either directly on the taskbar or in explorer if you know where it is, and it should allow what i have pictured above.

Windows key + space brings the Sidebar to the front. I don't think there's any easy way to hide it though.
Wow, I did not know this!
I just downloaded this Stacks applet and really like it. However, it doesn't seem to like my external hard drive. I have my pictures and music on the external, but I wanted to make a Stack icon for the pictures to show all the folders. It works fine when I set it up but when I turn off my computer and turn it back on, the icon is gone and I have to set it up again. The external auto-turns on when the computer turns on too. Is this just the draw back of linking it to an external? If so, major bummer. I really liked this applet.

Though for someone using Rocketdock, like me, it's useless :P do you know what that is? You should really try it
Yeah, that's what I do with Opera
Eh, I'm not a fan of the OSX style dockbar. Just need a place where shortcuts go that's not directly on the desktop/quicklaunch bar.
