DVD Burner Issues

I'm currently using my laptop (Dell Insprion E1705) with a built in CD/DVD Writer. I keep burning coasters. A lot of my discs keep coming out showing bands on them. And then the drive doesn't even seem to recognize that there is a disc in the drive when I put it back in to read it. Here are some details:

Using the latest version CDBurnerXP 4
Using Maxell DVD-Rs.
Using Windows XP Pro SP2, and .NET is installed.
I have tried adjusting the speed, and deactivating buffer protection. Slowing it down and removing the buffer protection appeared to make a much more solid write to the disc, but it still won't read. Also, currently trying to use Disc-at-once.
I'm getting around or over a two thirds failure rate. As in it seems to burn fine, but then won't read.
I'm trying to burn data to the DVD-Rs as backups and data archives.

The laptop is almost two years old, but is still working fine. It burned discs pretty well in the beginning, and I was using an older version of CDBurnerXP (version 3 at the time, I think). I don't think age has much to do with it as I haven't used the writer that much, and mostly sporadically.
