You have to be signed into a Live profile to save your game, just like Fallout 3 and Gears of War, but you CAN create an offline profile.

It would be nice if the games error messages were a bit more detailed. "Upload failed" when I try to upload a video doesn't tell me anything at all. Besides the video not uploading, I guess.

So shadows look a bit odd but otherwise it's been great fun once I got over my initial nerdrage. But can anyone think of a reason why the "-norestrictions" command isn't working for me? According to what I've read adding that parameter should let you set the graphics to anything you want, recommended settings be damned. But I can't get it to work. Has anyone got it to work and if so did you have to do anything special?
Also am I the only one that gets a fatal error every time I try to play whilst logged in to Rockstar Social thing? I have to skip the logon or the game will CTD on startup. Just fantastic for a program that you are forced to install and run.

The -norestrictions tag also doesn't work for me. It's pretty fucking stupid that Rockstar thinks that I'm too stupid to manage my own settings. I'm pretty sure my machine is capable of doing medium textures with more draw distance than 8.

Same here. Has -norestrictions worked for anyone yet? Is there another workaround? I would like to at least try the game at my monitor's native resolution.

Do you know of the glitch for that achievement?
Try to roll it once or twice at a time, but keep going full speed, and try to do as many jumps with one or two rolls as possible in a short time. As long as you do 5 rolls total in around 2 or 3 minutes, you'll get the achievement. I'm pretty sure it's important that you don't stop or slow down, though.

I don't know. I'm back to "fuck this" for the game again. I wasted an hour between jumping the car in various locations for 0 rolls and the most I got on the swing was 3, when that shit didn't just throw me out. The shit spins and twists and rolls... what the hell is considered a "roll" to the game?

    edit: consistency.

Which is an incredibly stupid way of doing things. I lost my savegames for Gears of War more times than I can count because of that freaking system. Why you need to be signed into Live when the savegames don't actually exist over Live makes no sense.

I mean, on the console version does it care whether you're signed into Live or not before giving you access to your savegames?

I had a heap of trouble getting that achievment, but the glitch lets you get it in a couple of minutes. Which is only fair, I think, when you've done more than 5 rolls in one jump and it just hasn't counted it.

So I just finished this game and
I took the revenge path first and Pegorino emerges as a villain for just the last mission, which makes it kinda anti-climactic. There are moments when the plot really rises above the mediocre but the ending underwhelmed me. I'm about to go for the deal path now. What are your, yes, your, thoughts on the IV's ending?

yea, I don't know... I'll give it a few more goes tomorrow. It's just stupid that it doesn't work consistently. (IE: Launching my car flailing through the air halfway across an island using the swing only registered as 3 flips

though it could be how I'm hitting the ramp. my first attempts I'd always do two wheels across the side, full speed. Then I switched to going full speed and hand brake turning into the ramps to launch (which also results in flipping on the curb at times) I figure at this point I'm just going to go straight at the ramps and see what happens

Magic is essentially what keeps your PC running.

Unfortunately most PCs use D&D 1st Edition rules which means the magic isn't as effectual as it could be. Or some other dorky analogy.

    Depends on the OS.

Windows 95 was when MS switched to D&D rules, starting with D&D 1st Ed.
Windows 98 moved to 2nd Ed.
XP moved to 3rd, and then 3.5 with the last Service Pack
The most recent Service Pack for Vista upgraded the ruleset to 4th Ed., marking a dramatic change in MS's speed of rules adoption.

    Linux uses GURPS

Mac OS's can use D&D rules now, though they tend to call it "Interactive Storytelling" so it doesn't sound as nerdy.

What happens when you login to GFW Live, are your savegames still available to you? And if you save, and then the next time play without logging in again, is that savegame still there?

The reason I ask is that Gears had some... issues with its savegames and connectivity with GFW Live. This often caused it to lose all its savegames altogether. Or at least pretend they weren't there.

AWESOME the norestriction issue seems to be resolved.
Firstly, open up the social club thing and log in. Seems theres been an update and error MMA 10 no longer occurs, so now it is possible to play the game without the Skip Logon trick.
With your desktop shortcut, add the parameter -norestriction. NOT -norestrictionS. NO S.
Open social club, log in, THEN run GTA IV from the shortcut you just altered, and you should be good to go.

Becuase, while the story is good for a GTA game, it's not perfect. Why does Niko still do taxi missions, assassination missions, and steal cars after the deal, the bank heist, and the whole... ending debacle? The story ties the missions together, but it's pretty clearly secondary to the gameplay. WOuld you expect Niko to just say "I'm going clean" after the heist, and that's it, game over?

No. But that's because I thought 250 grand was apparently not enough. When Roman said all their dreams would come true if I made the deal, I was expecting the money to be more than a million dollars, at least. So when I realized it was just 250 Gs, I went "WTF? I already made this much."

Oh, another reason I didn't expect Niko to walk away after the heist was that making money wasn't his ultimate goal. He was there to find Darko.

Fair enough. I think that the characters and story are pretty good (not perfect, but definitely above average), it's just that they don't fit in well with the game. Except on very rare occasions, gameplay doesn't affect the story, which I think harms an open-world game like this.

Yeah, I know. Have you played Mafia? That did the whole epic-crime-saga thing way better since it was so much more focussed. Right from the time the first previews came out, Rockstar had been emphasizing the fact that this was going to be one of the best crime dramas of the year, right on par with the best of Hollywood. And you can tell that that is what they're going for, but the very idea is at conflict with the nature of the game. I mean, if you're trying to tell a good story, you can't have as much filler as the GTA series demands.

EDIT(new thoughts!): Take Oblivion. The main quest keeps trying to tell you that the world is in danger and that you need to hurry and get to X spot NOW. But you could blow off saving the world indefinitely and nothing would happen. Except for Kvatch and the random Oblivion gates which just sit there waiting for you to close them, no where else in the game world is there any sign of actual danger. Open-world games should have storylines like Fallout 3's (which I haven't played yet). "Lost your dad? There's a whole world out there. Go find him."

Rockstar certainly isn't playing nicely like they were for GTA3 and GTAVC, though, that's for sure.
