This game was weird for me. I beat the Storyline but haven't had any desire to play the game since.
I did one thing after I beat the game. I called Packie and we went drinking after Kate died. After, I haven't touched the game since. Maybe it's just burnout from playing it so quickly, but it's kind of dissapointing.

OH! I did that too! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that way. =)
Thinking that he'd at LEAST talk about Kate if I took him drinking, I did the EXACT same thing. (He had called as soon as the credits stopped rolling and talked about Kate, and then I called him right back to ask him to go drinking). I figured that the game was giving a hint to go talk to him in order to continue the storyline/get some resolution.

Nothing doing. He didn't mention her on the car ride, didn't mention her while we were drunk... it was like it never happened. Then I realized that the phone call he gave just after the credits was supposed to BE the resolution... but it wasn't much of one. It was just him feeling horrible. They never programmed him to have any future responses about what happened, which I think was too bad. =(
I did this and he talked about Kate :O He definitely has a conversation about her. He rants about how Kate is dead, Gerry is in prison and one of his brothers is dead/a cop/an addict then talks about how he's all his Ma has left and that's becasically a piece of shit anyway.

    It's pretty damn depressing.
See, that's what he said to me over the phone BEFORE I went drinking with him... when he called me just after the credits were over. I got the exact conversation you describe, but it was over the phone. Then when I called back to invite him drinking (and during the whole picking him up/taking him there/having a drink), it was like none of it ever happened.
All I got in the phonecall was a convo where he basically says "Oh man she's dead", I'm pretty sure I got the rest when I took him drinking.
Hmm, I could've sworn I had that conversation with him over the phone. I remember being distinctly dissatisfied at how quickly he seemed to forget about the death of his sister.

The only reason most people are aware that a block/parry move exists in GTAIV is because there is an achievement. I think that says a lot about how well it's incorporated into the combat system.

It didn't change anything. Killing someone who betrayed you years ago makes nothing in your life better. Darko was totally irrelevant to Niko, he was a broken man who wasn't worth killing. All he was to Niko was an unhealthy obsession.

Back away from the dude. Let him get a litttle bit close, watch his shoulders carefully, if they twitch at all, if he squares up, back away some more. Let him get a biiiit close. Then dance away before he squares up. Jabs will wiff, and you can duck and counter a whiffed jab if you are quick. You'll see big swings an absolute mile away.

If they refuse to cooperate and just want to close in with sure jabs while you are constantly keeping a decent distance, next time you let them get close start an offensive with the forward kick and then do a combo.

Back....the fuck....away again rookie after that combo. Away. I said away you twit. Gawd.

I mean it's not like positioning and keeping your distance is the first thing they teach you in 99% of the decent martial arts, boxing, self defence classes in the world. Yet the problem with gta iv is the melee system. Snicker.

It would be cool to be able to choose to work for or against the Patriots and then get fucked no matter which side you choose because Snake has killed like 10,000 people and smokes like a flame and thus doesn't deserve a happy ending.

So if you see progress as some arbitrary vehicle count rather than the fundamentals of how the game plays then yes you are completely right and also moronic.

I said vehicle types, not count. The new vehicles absolutely added dimensions to gameplay. IV was a contraction in many ways from San Andreas, and I felt that while playing it.

It was still a fun game, but I don't usually file "do some stuff you've done before pretty much the same way as last time" under 10/10 unless we're talking simulation games.

I think the important thing to realise with GTA IV is that with it they've completely reset the whole series. Everything is completely different from before, it's actually impressive that they've managed to completely change everything whilst still retaining the fundamental feel of the original. That's what they did with GTA3 as well. It felt exactly like you were playing GTA1 except it was now in 3D - I still remember fondly playing it for the first time and realising I knew exactly how to play it because the controls, the timing, the fundamental gameplay was so consistent with GTA1, only now I have more immersion. They've made that same leap again with GTAIV, everything is substantially and groundbreakingly better than GTA3 but it still retains the essential feel of GTA1.

As part of this process, they've dropped a lot of the largely irrelevant bells and whistles that they tacked on to the GTA3 model for the sequels in lieu of genuine innovation (some additional elements of VC and SanAn were genuine innovation, I wholeheartedly agree that the inclusion of motorcycles, Helicopters and Aeroplanes was innovative for the series, as was player-owned properties; other stuff was just fluff though, fun fluff but not innovation). Despite that - despite having less minigames and side distractions - it's still vastly more immersive than previous games because they've overhauled the things that really add to immersion - graphics, audio, physics engines, characterisation, story; this stuff changes and improves upon the experience significantly without breaking what already works, what still represent the core appeal of the game. It really is a significant innovation in gaming and sets a new bar for so many game genres.

You have to realize, this is a whole new platform and engine and all of that, so it's not going to have everything that San Andreas had. This is the ground floor of this generation, and we're going to be seeing more and more stuff tacked on when the "expansions" are released for GTA4. I'm not talking DLC, I'm talking the Vice City and San Andreas equivalents to GTA4. And while I really hope the DLC has a lot of neat things, new clothes and cars and all that, I'm not betting we're going to anything on scale of what SA brought to the table. At least, not for a few years.

The devs did intimate that the DLC would be of the scale of VC and SanAn. How much of that was mere bluster, only time will tell.

Wow, I went all 1800s at the end there.

That is a pretty large claim, since VC and SA were whole new plots in entirely new cities. Are they saying that they're just going to add in all the bonus fluffy stuff like bicycles and just leave the plots out? I like Nico and all, but I'm kinda done with the Russian mob thing.

I got the impression they were implying that this generation's sequels would essentially be served through DLC, rather than shelved boxes. So the DLC would be whole new games. I can't imagine that they wouldn't also sell them through retail though, I'm not really sure what they meant or if they really new either or just thought it would sound epic enough to shift another million units and then they could just deny the claims afterwards.

I hope they don't go for the crazy customisation that some people are demanding, after having it in GTA IV. Yes, more clothing options would be good, but that's really about it. Having him in cut-scenes with a giant, rainbow-coloured afro and clown shoes would not be a good move. Similarly, jetpacks and fighter jets, while cool, would not fit the game at all.

I like the setting and characters enough so that I'd be happy with a bunch of those bells and whistles being added, along with a solid new story arc for Nico. Seems to me that significant new real estate would be a pretty big download (though Staten Island has been rumored).

    But certainly others may differ.

That's why you have a choice to dress like that. No one is saying you absolutely have to make your character look like a ridiculous mess, but just beause you don't want it doesn't mean other people wont. That's why I like games like SA and to an extent Dead Rising, because you could look serious and play the game, or put on children's clothing and people wouldn't react to it, making it hilarious.

    @Szechuanosaurus:

GTA4 "sequels" will be downloadable? How does that work, with the size cap on DLC? I know a lot of the disc is the engine and all that, but a lot of it is voice acting, music, and textures, which are high res these days. That's not going to meet the 250mb (?) restraint. I'm aware that the DLC will not be a huge 40 hour epic game like GTA4 was, but with the limits that are on it, the most we can hope for is a game the size of Bohan.

I'd be interested if they filled up some of the properties in Liberty City - theres a lot of interesting buildings and shops etc. that look like they were intended to be enterable so I'm predicting that their interiors might be added in future DLC - and maybe added a new district then threw in a whole bunch of new characters (including a new playable character), some more clothes shops maybe a few new cars (the cars are pretty much always the same ones throughout the series anyway, just from different eras) and a new story line.

So basically, a whole new game just reusing the existing assets with some extra stuff added in.

Of course, there's the whole Vice City rumour with supposed in-game clues as well, so that's a possibility. If they kept it in the same era, they'd still be able to reuse a lot of the pre-existing stuff like vehicles.

Either of these would seem like very cost effective methods of delivering essentially new games through DLC.

Edit @ Spooky: I had no idea there was a cap on DLC. This was just stuff I heard rumours about and I'm sure someone from rockstar specifically said something along the lines of the DLC being to GTA IV what Vice City and San Andreas were to GTAIII.

I'm pretty sure with the money they paid Microsoft will make an exception to the 250mb rule

Or it'll be downloaded in chunks.

Lots and lots and lots and lots of chunks.

Or maybe they will go episodic. Very short episodes.

I dunno, how much stuff is packed into the Mass Effect expansion? That must contain a fair bit of audio, voice acting, new models etc.

I thought the size cap was for XBLA games only, and at 350mb now anyway. I know patches have to be small, and DLC can't be mandatory, but I wasn't aware of any size rules for it.

edit: I think Dan Houser also said they wanted to 'break Xbox Live' with their DLC. It's meant to be big. I guess considering a dvd with the full game on it is 8gb, with the GTA engine and assets all there, they could come in well under that and still provide plenty of new content.
