Looking for some new/old games to play

NightslyrNightslyr Registered User regular
edited June 2008 in Games and Technology
I've been pretty bored lately. GTA IV was great, but now that I've completed the story, I don't feel like playing it. I've never been one of those "must get 100% completion" guys, so finding pigeons and whatnot just isn't interesting to me.

I do have some games in my catalog that I'm partially through (Assassin's Creed, Xenosaga Ep. II, Crisis Core, FFT: War of the Lions), but I'm not really in the mood to go back to them. The same can be said for games I haven't even tried yet (Rogue Galaxy, MGS3).

So, I'm looking for something different. I currently own the following systems:

PS3 (60GB, so backwards compatibility isn't an issue)
Xbox 360
PSP
Gameboy Advance
PC

I'm looking for something in the following genres:

Old school RPG, something along the lines of Lunar. I don't mind a cliche plot if the characterization is decent and the music is good.

Space opera/combat sim. Something like the Wing Commander games or the incredibly underrated Colony Wars. Note: I did own the sequel to the latter. Other than the first handful of missions, it wasn't very good.

A good sci-fi game. Caveat: I'm not good at PC shooters because of my hands, so something like Deus Ex is most likely out. I'd like something immersive, though.

A good flight sim game. I've tried some of the older Janes games, but they never worked on my older PCs. In a perfect world, I'd play an updated version of Microprose's old F-19 Stealth Fighter game. Is there anything like that available today?

Thanks! :)

EDIT: Games I already own that I've already beaten that fit my description --

Mass Effect
Lunar
Xenogears
Xenosaga Ep. I
Colony Wars
Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga
Final Fantasy IV - XII (not including X-2 and XI)
FFTA
Shining Force
Half-Life*
Half-Life 2 (including Episodes 1 & 2)*
Jedi Knight*
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Doom*
Doom II*
EVE Online (tried it several times...looks nice, but I'm not much of a online player. could never get into the guild/corp thing)

*I've watched my brother play through them multiple times.

    Mass Effect.

I just beat this today and it is so awesome. Great story, great sci-fi. I've only played the PC version though, so I dunno if you'd want to go for the PC or the 360 version.

Yup it is great. Unfortunately, I have it, and have beaten it twice. ;)

Might want to post some kind of list of what you HAVE played, or the whole thread's going to be like this.

Yup, just edited the OP with the titles that immediately come to mind.

Shin Megami Tensei are arguably the best traditional RPGs there are.
There are a fair few for the PS2. Persona 3 might appeal to you in particular.

Yeah, I've been debating whether or not to try my hand that them. I've heard that the difficulty ranges from rape - rape x 1,000,000, though, which is why I hesitate.

For RPGs, I enjoyed Suikoden 3. I understand that 1 and 2 are supposedly better but I never played them, but I really enjoyed number 3. If you can get your hands on Star Ocean 2, for the psx do it, it was awesome.

Try freelancer for PC as a space action sim. It's easy to get into, and actually has decent controls even if you don't have a joystick.

Nothing a little grinding and some choice fusions can't solve.

    Mostly the second.

Persona 3's a good starter, but Devil Summoner's much easier overall, in my opinion(and shorter).

Persona 3's really not that bad. Nocturne's quite tricky, but there are plenty of harder games than either.

I tried Nocturne, and got bored due to the basically non-existent plot. The combat was cool, and deep, but there wasn't much to keep me going.

I'd also recommend X3, or if you're willing to pay the monthly fee, Eve. Neither is really a 'flight sim', but they're both good games, much more about starship management than twitch gameplay.

Nocturne has possibly the finest plot in any JRPG.
It takes a little mental adjustment due to the minimalist style, and it's slow to get started, but it actually has genuine moral ambiguity and choice, which is more than I can say for the rest of the genre.

Some of these might not be exactly what you're looking for but I've left in pretty much everything that I think can conform to your specifications. Pretty please follow up on some of them, like Freespace 2 or Republic Commando. I know you said you're not good at shooters so Deus Ex is out but Deus Ex is much less of a shooter than HL2, and you've beat HL2. And Deus Ex is also the best game ever made, and it's a sci-fi RPG.

For RPGs: Breath of Fire 3 and 4 on the PS1 are great. I'd also recommend the oft-overlooked and underappreciated Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, but it's not really a traditional RPG.

As far as sci-fi-ish games go, Second Sight is pretty cool. It's a stealth game with psychic powers made by the Timesplitters guys that has a surprisingly well done plot. And if you like psychic powers and don't care about plot there's also Psi-Ops, which is more of a straight-up 3rd person shooter with better powers and gameplay than Second Sight but a garbage plot.

I'm really, really not big into RPGs at all - my library is made up of about 80% 3rd-person action games - but even I poked my nose into Persona 3 and didn't emerge 'till... I think it was 100 hours later. And with P3:FES going for 30 bucks now, if you like RPGs you really owe it to yourself to check it out. From what I hear Atlus has re-released Nocturne as well.

By action games do you mean shooters or beat-em-ups? I have been craving kicking the shit out of people but besides dmc and ninja gaiden I have no clue what to play.

.hack//G.U. games. They're not old school JRPGs, but everyone who is a fan of the genre should play them. The games are set in a fictional MMO called The World, and it has such depth to it. There's even a desktop where you can browse news, e-mail, forums, and more.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

    This.

There was a game much like this, might have been the same studio even, for the Xbox but I can't remember the damn name. I remember using L trigger for your left first, R for your right and mixing up combos with the two triggers and the sticks, plus throwing energy balls and creating shields and all that jazz. I can't remember the damn name, but it came out before Chronicles of Riddick and was very similiar style of game.

It might have began with an E, maybe not though.

You could always pick up the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2. It has Phantasy Star II-IV as well as a ton of other great games. But, seriously, the Phantasy Star games are awesome. The collection was only $20 when it came out, so I'm sure you can find it for cheaper now.

Hey, thanks for all the replies. I'm still updating the list of games I've already played in the OP as things progress.

Regarding Persona 3 FES, is that the original with an added chapter or two, or is it a sequel of some sort?

I feel I should also expand on my EVE Online views:

I love the look of the game, but, like I said in the OP, I'm not really into the guild/corp thing. I mean, I like helping others, and having someone to fly with occassionally is fun, but I prefer playing by myself the vast majority of the time.

EVE Online itself just isn't much fun for me. The combat is pretty boring, despite how pretty it is. It takes too long to go from point A to point B, which isn't helped by there not being some automated item retreival from the marketplace. And, from what I could tell, there was no viable way to be a smuggler/weapons dealer, which is a shame as that would be the perfect role for me, given my preference to play a more solitary game. I'd love to be that guy who's useful to many, but has to go it alone most of the time.

It's a shame, because it is so pretty. Those ads run during Battlestar Galactica don't help matters.

Breakdown! That was it. From Namco. Look it up if you can, wasn't that popular and the controls were a little stiff but I remember having a ton of fun with it.
