The gift was a Persona 4 t-shirt, for the record. Not something worth being jealous over.
It's a nice Persona 4 T-shirt though. Yellow background with black silhouttes. Wearing it right now.
You generally couldn't pay me money to wear yellow OR wear gaming shit, so it's really nothing I'd be interested in and would have probably given it away ASAP.
...
unless it morphs into a Jack Frost doll. Does it do that?
So let me get this straight. Before this year is over, we are probably going to get what appears to be a quality translation of Innocent Sin AND Persona 4 in the US?
Develop strong friendships to aid you in battle, take direct control of your party in combat, acquire and fuse Personas, craft weapons, sign up for part-time jobs... You'll never be short of something to do in Persona 4.
No more party AI?
Hopefully they'll make it easier/saner to do a single run max S-link game this time.
Well, knowing that P3 has AI control for your party is one of the major reasons I've held off getting it, since I pretty much hate that. So hearing P4 doesn't have that is good news for me.
They're generally smart, and they give you tactics that let you customize their behavior pretty closely.
That may be, but I'm certain, especially given the stated difficulty of the game, that I will at times be screaming at the idiocy of them not doing something in a situation that will lead to my death. Then i will be pissed. Hell, I've seen people in this thread yell about how their allies won't do something or do something stupid. I just hate the game mechanic, at least in RPGs where there's no god damn reason for it to even exist.
Also, what is your avatar supposed to be? G2 Hero Ultra Magnus with wings?
Normally, I'm with you. I hate retarded AI. However, you'd be doing yourself a disservice to skip out on P3 just because of this. The only times I've really hated the AI is when it tries to conserve SP to use a smaller heal instead of a bigger one. However, even that has only killed me maybe once. The rest of the time, they heal fairly intelligently, and respond intelligently to enemy strengths and weaknesses. On top of that, they're not all that important compared to the main character.
So let me get this straight. Before this year is over, we are probably going to get what appears to be a quality translation of Innocent Sin AND Persona 4 in the US?
Um, can anyone actually open the trailer on Youtube that's in the new newsletter? It says I have to put Atlus on my friend's list.
I think it's the same as the official opening. I'll be stunned if it's something different.
I'm still stunned, regardless.
I really didn't see this coming at all.
I just checked out the P4 opening on Youtube and the trailer that they showed at Anime Expo was very similar, but not entirely the same. It looked like they took the official opening and spliced some gameplay footage into it.
Oh yes, the reaction was intense. There was way more enthusiastic clapping and cheering than I had seen at any of the other panels I had been to at the con. The clapping just went on and on.
At the start, the guy announced that they had left a sign up card for Atlus' online newsletter and then told us we could keep the pens that were left with the card. And I was like, "A pen?! Their free gift that they were advertising was a lowsy pen?! A pen that wasn't even on my chair!" Then at the end of the panel, they told us about the shirts and all was forgiven.
EDIT: And yes, a video of the panel would be great if only for the fact that there were so many Persona 3 cosplayers in attendance.
EDIT#2: During the panel, they asked those in attendance who liked the US Persona 3 cover. A number of hands went up. Then they asked who liked the US cover more than the Japanese cover. Like 3 hands went up. I think it's safe to say we'll be getting the original cover for Persona 4.
And the announcement isn't amazing because we're getting Persona 4. We all were expecting as much. The announcement is amazing because it's 1) coming this year (I think most everyone was expecting a summer '09 release at the earliest) and 2) it's a mere $40 and still includes a music CD.

Did they go into detail on the series history, or anything to suggest the possibility of remakes/ports of the older games, or was it mostly a Persona fest? (Not to say that's a bad thing)
Well, the Persona 3 Japanese cover art was good. The Persona 4 cover art is not. But, I tend to really, really, really hate the "look at the collage of anime characters staring into space!"

I like covers where the entire cast gets representation.
I really hope P4 features more interesting exploration/combat. The dungeoncrawling in P3 was the least fun part of the game, thanks to a very, very drab and monotonous dungeon for all but a few portions of the game.

According to the Famitsu review (so, you know. may not really be worth anything) the P4 dungeons are TERRIBLE.

Yeah, the panel itself was basically a Shin Megami Tensei history lesson.
Here's how it went:
I showed up about 45 minutes before the panel was going to start. Anime Expo staff had people lining up in rows in a couple of smaller rooms near the bigger room where the panel was going to be held. When I got there, there were already a lot of people waiting; I'd say at least 100 and this was nearly an hour before it was to start. By the 30-minute mark, the two rooms were filled and they started having people line up in the hallway. There were a ton of cosplayers for Persona 3, but sadly, none for any of the other Megaten games (I would have loved to see some DDS cosplay or Devil Summoner and I would have totally geeked out to see some Persona 2 or Soul Hackers cosplay).
At about the 10-minute 'til mark, they started moving people in. Big room, could seat several hundred people. Stage with several chairs up front & a big projector screen on the side.
Once everyone was seated, they introduced the panelists. They had the series producer, the script editor for the last couple of games, and two voice actors: one who did the protagonist in DDS1&2 & Persona 3, and one who did the voice for Aigis in Persona 3.
Then they did a big overview of the series. They had a slide of the cover art for the main Shin Megami Tensei titles, a slide for the Persona titles, one for the Majin titles (the Strategy/RPG spin-off that was never released here), and one for the Devil Summoner titles. The series producer talked about each set of games briefly along with mentioning some of the other spin-offs like the DDS games & the Jack Bros. Virtual Boy game.
Then they went back and went over all of the Shin Megami Tensei games that actually made it over here in the US in more depth (excluding the portable games) in order of release. First, Persona where the producer talked about how they weren't sure how the game would go over here, thus the radical changes in the localization. Then Persona 2 where he talked about why they decided to skip Innocent Sin & go straight to Eternal Punishment (partially for content and all the swastikas & nazi stuff in Innocent Sin, partially because they thought Eternal Punishment was a more polished game and included enough info about Innocent Sin for people to get the gist of IS). Then he talked about Nocturne & how it was the start of the use of the SMT name in the US along with how it differed from previous games. And so on and so on and so on until he got through Persona 3. Mention was made of how meticulous the producer is in trying to make sure the mythology is correct in these games and he actually apologized for a god's name that was mispelled in one of the games that he found out about later.
Sometime in the last segment, the voice actors talked about their participation in the games. The guy who did the protagonists was rather amusing to listen to. He talked about how he was all "Cool! I get to be the protagonist!" and then they told him that SMT protagonists tend to be silent so all he really got to do was various screams & battle sounds. He also talked about the first time they showed him footage from DDS and he was all "Whoah! You're actually going to release this game?! I mean, these are cool villains and all but...wait. These are the heroes? Sweeet." The woman who did Aigis talked about how they wanted her voice to mirror Aigis' progression from a typical robot to a more human-like individual.
After Persona 3, they had a slide for Persona 4 which was about to be released in Japan and they announced that they were going to show a video clip. There was massive applause. They showed the video clip that you can see at http://atlus.com/persona4 - immediately after the clip, the next screen showed the announcement for the US release. There was a second of silence while people read the announcement and then applause that made the Persona 4 video clip applause - or in fact, all of the applause I had seen at every other panel at this convention, including the applause at the Funimation panel where they announced that they were basically releasing every anime known to man - seem like nothing.
After that was the Q&A session. Several people asked about the possibility of releasing older SMT games either in collections or on download system like VC or PSN. They said that releasing PS1 games at this point is pretty much impossible and that there were technical difficulties involved in VC or PSN downloads. I asked how Persona 3:FES was selling in comparison to Persona 3, and they said that both have sold and are selling very well, but that they couldn't disclose specifics. Several people asked about Persona 4, but aside from saying that it plays like Persona 3 but with several refinements they couldn't give any more details at this time.
And finally, they closed the session and said that to thank everyone for showing up and sitting through the whole panel, people would be handy out P4 T-Shirts to everyone on their way out.
EDIT: No one mentioned Imagine. There was some snickering by both the producer and audience at the mention of SMT Nine during the history lesson though.
Mention was made of how meticulous the producer is in trying to make sure the mythology is correct in these games and he actually apologized for a god's name that was mispelled in one of the games that he found out about later.
Now that is awesome. I really enjoy how seriously they take these things because they just add a whole other layer of depth to the story that you probably won't even know without looking stuff up. Like the connection between Polydeuces and Castor.
It doesn't look like we'll ever get any of the older SMT games from Atlus, but if we do, I think it would be from a port on one of the portable systems.
And I've been listening to the P4 trailer music and it's growing on me. It doesn't have that awesome moment on the P3 opener where the protagonists shoots himself and the music goes up in intensity, but the P4 opener is still plenty enjoyable to these J-Pop lovin' ears.
EDIT: You can't see in those screenshots, but what appears to be black circles next to the Shin Megami Tensei titles are actually the SMT pentagram.

He also talked about their discussion on Aigis vs Aegis: should they stick with Aegis since that was the original Japanese spelling or go with Aigis since that reflects how it should be pronounced? Spelling or pronunciation? In the end, he discovered that Aigis was an accepted Greek spelling and they ended up going with that.
And he mentioned that for characters from Chinese mythology, they actually went ahead and used the Chinese spelling/pronunciation and not the Japanese. As a fluent speaker of Chinese, I can confirm that's true. So cool.
I'm on a total Persona high right now. It's almost midnight and I can't sleep. Man, I wish all of you could have been there with me.

Now I want to make a Soul Hackers protagonist costume for next year.
Yes, the SMT has the coolest guns ever. Gun that lets you kill your conscious self and release your inner persona? Check. Gun that unfolds into a laptop that lets you summon demons? Heck, yeah!
Was not expecting such a quick turnaround for localization. I was thinking spring/summer '09 at best.
Awesome news.
I think Atlus and NIS are showing quite effectively that the US market is primed for Widget RPGs (Widget = WJT -- Weird Japanese Thing). Even Square has taken note -- they've mentioned that all future FF/DQ titles will be simultaneous releases.
Didn't the guys at NIS say in an interview that they wouldn't be able to do more than 1 or 2 games a year if they hadn't hit it off in the US?
I asked ATLUS reps about this personally and they admitted that localization isn't a terribly lengthy process anymore, even done right, and this was at E3 2006, I believe - maybe even 2005.
Square Enix, at the same E3, pretended that localization was this massive undertaking that they did out of altruistic concern for their North American brothers and sisters, which was total horseshit and I and the rest of the press in the conference knew it, which was more than half Japanese.
In other words, don't let ANY of Square's actions define your perceptions of what is either possible or standard in this market. They don't do things at the speed of possibility, they do things at the speed of whatever they figure will make them the most money. I think this "simultaneous release" business for future titles is because they're starting to realize how other companies are making them look like jackasses now and they can't rely on the tried-and-true method of escaping criticism by pretending that localization actually takes 8-10 months to accomplish, when many other companies are proving that it clearly doesn't.

True, but they also mentioned at the panel yesterday that Persona 3 had a massive amount of text to localize compared to any other game they had ever translated, at least 2-3 times as much. Also, they had to rewrite some of the dialogue because it wouldn't work in the English speaking context: for example, English as a Foreign Language questions on class quizzes were obviously too easy for actual speakers of English so they were changed to grammar & literature questions.
Interesting trivia fact: remember that MMORPG you play in Persona 3? In the original Japanese game, the MMORPG was based on Shin Megami Tensei 1, however for the US release, they decided to change the MMORPG to be based on Persona 1 since Persona 1 was essentially the birth of Megaten in the US.
Also, at a different panel at Anime Expo, Aniplex talked about how they're planning on releasing the Persona anime in the US.
Also, they had to rewrite some of the dialogue because it wouldn't work in the English speaking context: for example, English as a Foreign Language questions on class quizzes were obviously too easy for actual speakers of English so they were changed to grammar & literature questions.
They did that but they kept in the bullshit japanese history questions? What the fuck is wrong with them? I still believe they could've done some tweaking to that teacher's design (mainly get rid of the samurai helmet) and it could've been something like world history. Something not impossible for people not born in Japan to know the answers to.

Or, you know, you could just go to Wikipedia and look up the answers. Besides, I probably wouldn't do any better if they changed it to European history. I'd do alright with American history, but others probably wouldn't.
And the whole point of the teachers is that each of them has a weird quirk. The history teacher's a samurai obsessed nerd. What's wrong with that?

Unless they gave out the shirts first, that might've dulled the surprise a little.

Now I want to make a Soul Hackers protagonist costume for next year.
Yes, the SMT has the coolest guns ever. Gun that lets you kill your conscious self and release your inner persona? Check. Gun that unfolds into a laptop that lets you summon demons? Heck, yeah!

They did that but they kept in the bullshit japanese history questions? What the fuck is wrong with them? I still believe they could've done some tweaking to that teacher's design (mainly get rid of the samurai helmet) and it could've been something like world history. Something not impossible for people not born in Japan to know the answers to.
Nah. You're supposed to be a weeabo and know all kinds of Japanese history.
And the whole point of the teachers is that each of them has a weird quirk. The history teacher's a samurai obsessed nerd. What's wrong with that?
