I usually play on the TeamRoomba server while I'm waiting. They're pretty good and play a bunch of goofy maps that are fun for 15-20 minutes. They're a nice middle ground between our server's goofing around and the 4chan server's ear raping. The name of the game there seems to be pipe your music/annoying sound clip louder or longer than anybody else's. The Team Roomba server has music but it's usually opt-in and anything that's playing is easily turned off by typing a command into the chat.
So guys, this is a little off topic, but I had this... "moment" over the weekend.
My computer is perty awesome, I pretty much built it to run Bioshock full blast, and as a result, it does Tuftoo at full blast too at usually around 55 or so fps.
I tried playing on my laptop, which can play the game, but only decent at minimal settings, and the fps were significantly worse, I think 20 or something like that. As a result, I noticed I couldn't even play medic well.
I used to think I was pretty good at this game. When I'm not desperately trying to do well with pyro or spy (which I usually am and usually end up at the bottom of the score board for), I usually end up around the middle, or even near the top if I'm doing particularly well or playing medic. But now I'm thinking, maybe I'm only doing half-decent because my computer is beefy.
Hmm... I guess I don't really know what I'm asking. I guess I'd just like to hear other's thoughts on this.

If you're used to everything running smoothly, then the way you move your mouse and click and all that stuff reflects that.
If all of a sudden things are a bit slower it's going to mess you up, because that isn't how you learned to play. If you learn to play on a shitty computer, it's one thing, but to go from good fps -> bad is kind of jarring.
I love my crappy 2 year old laptop. I'm happy with how it plays TF2.
Anyone who claims that things like PC performance and latency don't impact the game is a filthly liar. But at the same time, they're not the sum total of your abilities- if you usually do well, that's got more to do with your capabilities than your rig's
P.S., if we have multiple pyros on a team, at least one of them should do nothing but spychecking. Seriously, you'd be suprised how many kills you can net if the enemy are flinging spies at your position.

Hmm, this is true. I used to play everything on my own 2 year old craptop, and I had gotten accustomed to the lag and "Oh shit too much glitter!" moments, but that was mostly with mmorpg's and less action oriented stuff. I thought maybe things would be different for a game with so much twitching.
I've been playing on the /v/ 4chan server when not at PA. People pipe all sorts of stupid shit in, you get to voteban people for bragging about how they muted someone, *AND* you get to call people fags and use phrases like demonnigger, skill rocket/skill gun, and so on and so forth.
Honestly, it's like super laid-back TF2 with people who generally know how to play the game.
more like super republic TF2 lameness packed with un-skilled pipers that play Austrian Techno that remixes banana phone.
they literally walk around and find new ways to waste away

Since I basically stopped playing this past school year, I don't know when the Medic pack thing was released. When did it come out?
Aside from the console command cheating, a lot of the achievements seem like they'd be pretty rare to get just by luck. I've been trying to play Medic as much as I can just to see what achievements I can get, and I got a few, but some of the ones like 'kill 10 spies that call for medic with your bonesaw'.. I mean how often does that happen, idk.

All the time.
Less on the PA servers. Most spies on the PA server will just blend in and backstab you instead of drawing attention.

Thank you for comforting my fragile ego.
Also, I was on a pub, and my team had five engies and no pyros. I had a field day of fire.

I call for medic quite a bit as spy. I often expect to meet my doom, but I usually find a nice medic to heal me, and in some rarer cases, uber me. They usually wisen up soon after though.

Spy is one of the classes I have yet to play, just because for whatever reason it seems daunting. I don't consider myself a very sneaky person.
Also, when I choose to play at noon est, pubs are the only way to go. Why are so many of them instant respawn? Stupid..

i beacon some spies to prevent me from being stabbed, job. you should do this too!

I use voice keys a lot as a spy, but not medic. Usually I don't really do anything except cloak behind you as a plausible disguise and stab Tyrannus a million times.
Bit late on this conversation, but if crit stickies were taken out, I would be somewhat disappointed.
This is not because I think they're fair, but because, I admit, I get a sort of guilty pleasure from taking out a squad with a single sticky. But there's definitely some times where it goes WAY too far. Like Dustbowl(lol demobowl) a day or two ago, when the Medics kept Ubering me because I'd maxed my crit rate. I was killing 4-5 BLUs with every Uber.
But if/when they take out insta-kill stickies(because they should, much as I would miss them), I think they'd need to buff pipes a little bit. Damage is fine, it's right at that range where you can laugh in glee when you one-shot Snipers and Scouts while still giving them the slim chance of survival. Maybe allowing the "explode-on-contact" property to last a second after hitting the terrain, instead of defusing immediately, because as-is, pipes are pretty easy to avoid if the Demo in question doesn't have pin-point accuracy. Plus I miss spiking a grenade off the ground into Scouts' faces.
So, I picked up TF2 again after a long break in which I totally forgot it existed (Thanks, XBox!) I also picked up a new headset, since people were bitching about my mic cutting out and generally sounding like ass, and then you all kept the server full for hours so I couldn't join. Sup with that?
Anyway, yeah, when DID the medic pack hit? I totally missed it, and it seems everyone has an Ubersaw but me. Though, I did get my Bluttslaughter pretty quick.
So, now I have to decide, GTA4, TF2, or WoW tonight?
Spy is one of the classes I have yet to play, just because for whatever reason it seems daunting. I don't consider myself a very sneaky person.
Especially on the PA server. There have been plenty of times as a spy that I simply seem to just straight up fail. It usually starts when I notice the enemy soldier looking at me funny. I wonder if suspects anything, which is about the time I take a rocket to the face.
It dawned on me on tough it can be last night. I notice a spy uncloaking on Goldrush near the first section's second point. I make one quick shout of "Spy Sniper!" over voice and the would be heavy-victim makes a quick turn to light him the fuck up before he resumed firing on the other team.
Also, when I choose to play at noon est, pubs are the only way to go. Why are so many of them instant respawn? Stupid..
No kidding. The game gets amazingly unbalanced when everyone is instantly respawning - it gives a huge advantage to defense, in most cases. There's a reason Valve made different respawn timers for different number of points capped; I hate that most pubs just ignore this.
the whole point of demoman is to lay waste to areas with explosives.
srsly
and 90% of the time crit stickies are avoidable. You just die to them because a) you're not paying attention so don't see them or b) you have no choice but to go through them. And in the latter case sending someone in to sacrifice themselves will solve that problem.
I find crit grenades much more annoying since they're often like CRAWKETS. You'll turn a corner and magically one will appear right in your face. Even then though, it happens, so be it.
But really, this is just generic crit complaining all over again disguised as demo complaining.

Well...that's what I blame it on, and it allows me to adequately explain why it's not my fault that I can't hit *anything* with a melee weapon.
I CAN SEE THE AXE HITTING HIS HEAD! WHY DOES HE NOT GET HURT?!?!!)@)(#*&@)(*#&
I hate it when I backstab someone, I hear the backstab noise, I even see the blood splat, and then they are somehow not dead. Stoopid lag. On the brightside, learning how to use the console has greatly increased my game. cl_interp is super. Also, zoom_sensitivity_ratio. I can finally snipe a little.

It has nothing to do with the avoidable stickies. I can launch a crit sticky into a group faster than a crit rocket travels and do more damage than said crit rocket. I can do this over walls and incredibly long distances. I already mentioned the Dustbowl game where I was Ubered and pushed the entire offense back across half the map without the help of anyone except the Medic healing me.Most of the people in this topic saying it should be nerfed are people who main Demoman. So yes, crit stickies are a problem. They're a slightly situational one, but they're still definitely a problem.
I really don't think crit stickies are that huge of a problem, but I also hate playing demoman, it is the only class I am supremely awful at, so I could be wrong.
I play demoman a decent amount and I don't see the stickies as any different than a crit rocket, crit chaingun, crit fire, etc. All of which kill you ridiculously fast. I don't get the complaint at all.
Yeah, I'm with you Job, my crit rockets placed into a group of 3 people close together can easily kill them all, same with a crit sticky. Granted, the crit chaingun and crit fire take more time to kill the same amount of people, but they're each massively devastating.
I've managed to hook a friend on TF2. We've been wanting to compare stats (specifically deaths, kills, and dmg dealt) for a given round during the round. Is there a simple way to do this? We've both searched around but neither of us is particularly bright. I figure there's gotta be a way as i'd think checking stats in-game is something people would want to do.
