it means the same thing for comics as it does for anything else

Alright, so this is why Uncanny X-Men #500 is a good starting out point because all the stuff that was happening is over and now it's back to "normal". basically.

No, it means that there is a brand new "normal" that #500 is going to establish.

    Hence a "new status-quo"

It also helps that it seems to ignore a whole bunch of character development, so you don't have to read as many books.

He's probably talking about Magneto. I don't really follow X-Men, but the scans-daily people seemed to think he'd regressed quite a bit based on the preview.

All I know is that Legacy Magneto is a much better character than this one.

Has Simone or any other female writer ever spoken at length on the prevalence of the male voice in comics, its effect on the medium, and so on?

    People don't like it here

Speaking as someone who's never read the comic, I don't mind it, but I do kind of get the feeling that I would be better off, uh, reading the comic

    Guys.
I dont get Green Lantern. I cant figure out why he's interesting. I want to understand. I assume that because its not obvious to me, there must be some awesome stories out there for him to be such a popular character.

Tell me Graphic Violence, where should I start?

The New Frontier vol. 1 & vol. 2

From there, well, there's just so much.
Grant Morrison's JLA run has so much Kyle Rayner goodness.
Geoff John's stuff (Rebirth, Sinestro Corps War, stuff in between that) is also good but requires some back story.

Not too much back story, mind you; if you start with Rebirth as I did you should be able to understand most of Johns' run easily enough.

I think Sinestro Corps is probably the most engaging and awesome Green Lantern story that I've read, enough so that I actually went back and got all of Johns' GL hardcovers. I do kind of agree with Fallingman in that Green Lantern isn't really all that interesting of a character, but thems some good reading nonetheless.

Is Alan Moore's run on Wildcats worth reading?

I haven't read an awful lot of Wildcats, for what it's worth; pretty much just the painfully bland Grifter/Midnighter mini and Aliens/Wildcats (Which I only read because it was an important part of what was happening in Ellis' Stormwatch).

Well I didn't exactly try to pretend that it's a universally held view, in fact it's right there in my reply. And no, I am not alone in disliking From Hell, but the exciting thing about personal opinion is that it's OK if not everyone agrees.

Is there a good site to find out what actual issue numbers are contained in a TBP or hardcover? Amazon doesn't get that detailed except they have good prices. I'm trying to get issues 8-27 of GLC and all of the latest Green Lantern stuff from before SCW and now after.

And as for why GL is cool, he's just about all powerful. Yeah, making a green boxing glove doesn't seem that cool, but damn there's a lot of power behind those constructs. "The Power of Ion" is a good book to just see how what all that green power could do. it's also nice that you don't see your main character go through personality changes like Batman or Superman can based on the writer. You have so many Green Lanterns they can each have their own personality and bring thier own flavor to the table. I used to think GL was pretty lame, but i've fully converted.

Oh, and where's a good place to start to learn more about Green Arrow, origins and good stories? The new GA and Black Canary book is kind of off putting since it seems like farce.

Not a great arc, but good enough, especially since it's the end of Brubaker and Fraction's run, which sets up what's going on now
