Help me record game footage: consoles->PC

edited June 2008 in Games and Technology
Edit: For cryin' out loud, I made this in G&T instead of Stupid Technology. Also can't seem to delete it.

I have a PC with a Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU, a cheaparsed TV tuner/capture card, ample HDD space, and dscaler.

I want to record some 'Cube/PS2 footage, and I want it to look good on Youtube/Google Video. I have composite and S-video out for the PS2 (component as well, but the capture card does not have component-in). I can hook everything up fine, even a splitter so I can still watch on my TV as I record, but I don't know what the heck I'm doing in dscaler. Every video I've tried to record looks like "Horribly Interlaced Low-Framerate Nightmare the 13th, part 12".

First: Should I be using some other program? I'd prefer something free.
Second: Please instruct me on what in heck I should be doing in said program.

    I used DScalar and it worked fine. Maybe there's a good wiki article on setting up DScalar? I know I had to play around with it for a good while.

    You should honestly be all set. You have everything you need, you just need to get DScalar setup correctly.

    www.doom9.net (or is it org?) is a great site for that sort of stuff.

    You need to be recording uncompressed. Most of these cheap ass tv tuner cards compress input horribly.

    When I record live gameplay on my 360 at 720p resolution it is something like 50-60mb a second in raw video.

    You then use something liek the Microsoft codec scaler to compress it. It has preset settings for youtube.

    You may need a higher quality capture card. Even for PS2 and Gamecube quality of video.

    Oh, I'd completely forgotten about doom9!

    Well, here's to helping me help you! :mrgreen:

    Hmm, I have a Philips-based card which is probably why dscaler doesn't work well. Perhaps I need a different card, or just virtualdub. I can mess around with it later when I'm in front of my box.

    Thanks!

    I use the PyroAV, a Analog to DV converter.

    pyroav1.jpg

    Unfortunately I haven't been able to use it much because iMovie just crashes my computer. As soon as I get my new iMac I'll be good though.

    The trick is to have a passthrough to a TV. The TV will have the proper latency for gameplay while the computer records. You can't game on just the computer because the delay is too great.

    At speeddemosarchive, the recommended method is to use a DVD recorder.

    Interesting, but I'd rather make like Scrooge McDuck and stick to reusable hard drive space.

    No one's recommend virtualdub?

    Edit: I should be more helpful.

    Start Virtualdub
    File -> Capture AVI

    This should open the capture window.
    File -> Set capture file -> Select where you want to save, and the filename.
    Device -> [select appropriate device]

    Video -> Video Source -> Select an appropriate input (composite, or s-video)

    To change the resolution that you capture at:
    Video -> Set Custom Format

    To change (or turn off) the compression:
    Video -> Compression
    (I personally use the mpeg4/xvid codec from the ffdshow codec pack, since I don't see the point of saving uncompressed video which I'm going to compress anyway)

    You may need to play around with the "capture filter", "preview pin" under the Video menu. These things tend to be video capture card specific, so I can't really help you there.

    At this point, you should be able to get a preview on screen.

    When you're ready:

    Capture -> Capture Video

    This should get the video recording. You might want to tweak it afterwards (e.g. audio sources/compression).

    Isn't that just to edit avi/mpeg videos? (talking about virtualdub)

    It can do simple edits to avi/mpegs, but it can also capture from video capture cards, or the screen itself, if you're keen.

    Can virtualdub capture footage from PC games? Y'know, as a GNU alternative to FRAPS?

    I doubt it, actually. I *believe* it'll just appear as a black box to Virtualdub, unless the game does software rendering.

    I'd normally try it and see, but I'm at work right now, so I'm a bit wary about firing up a full screen game and testing it out.

    Excellent info, thank you. I'll be able to apply it soon, so let's hope I remember what I'm doing in Monster Hunter :3

    Well in that case, is there any GNU alternative to FRAPS? I'd like to know if there's alternatives before I pay for it.

    Oh crap, the stupidly long composite cable I thought I had is a long S-video cable ... and my TV only has composite/coax out :/ Monoprice time, I suppose; seems there will be a slight delay before I try this out.

    There are a couple actually

    there's CAMTASIA. which is pretty decent for screen capture (it captures your screen so you can record pretty much ANYTHING.) but i wouldn't recommend it for modern games. the 30-day trial is neat, but for just recording purposes its way to expensive

    Then there is Camstudio which is free and just about as good at capturing your screen as camtasia. however chances are very high you'll have audio desync problems.

    EDIT: there are many more alternatives, but they arn't good enough for recording actual game footage.
