So I just downloaded Firefox 3 and I have 2 problems that I'm sure have a simple solution.
1. These bookmarks in my recent internet history drop-down menu thing. I want them gone. If I want to see my bookmarked sites I'll click bookmarks, not my drop-down of recent sites. How do I stop them from showing up? It's really annoying to just want to click penny-arcade and instead of finding it at the bottom like usual I find some other bookmark.
2. I have shitty eyes so I can't read small font on this high resolution. I always just used ctrl+scroll wheel to enlarge the text but in 3 it seems to not work right and it just zooms the whole page in instead of making the text bigger. This results in pictures being really blurry. I'd like a way to do it just like I used to.
So can anyone help with these 2 things?
1. Start typing the address you want. It will eventually (after a couple of tries) pick up your preferences and re-order the list.
2. Set the minimum font size in the preferences to something bigger than "none" or "nine." Or you could download Stylish and create a global style for all paragraph text to set the size bigger. Or you could do what Ayulin said.
Updated the op with add-ons info and a screen shot, at the moment i've decided on just adding the most popular add-ons. (searched the extension site and sorted by most popular)

Congratulations, you're experiencing the decided non-awesomeness of the Awesome Bar! And guess what, there's absolutely no way of turning it off without modifying Firefox's source code!
Really, the complaints about the awesomebar are a little overblown. Yes, it has bookmarks and searches by page title too, but I've only had FF3 installed for half a week, and it's associated 95% of the sites I visit frequently the same way FF2 did. I am kind of annoyed that sometimes it does select the first one automatically (even when the mouse is nowhere near it), so I'm hitting the second link when I do my usual down+enter when I don't look.
Also, thanks again for the help with the go button. Since you guys were so helpful, does anyone know how to turn on the next/previous buttons on in the bar when using the type-to-search?
So, uh, anyone have any particularly neat/useful GreaseMonkey scripts? Just installed it, since I've been hearing good things about it, and I just noticed it works (didn't let me install it in RC3.)
I could've sworn I saw a post or thread here with them, but I can't seem to find it now...

I've been using the betas and RC's for a few months now. Just because it trains itself and annoys me less doesn't make it not annoying. Given the option, I would switch back to the URL-only behavior any day.
(Note: I use FF3 on my work laptop and FF2 on my home PC, just so I can continue to compare what I like/don't like. Outside of the "awesome" bar, I prefer most of FF3's features.)

Isn't there something in about:config that allows you to revert the behaviour? I remember reading something about it - some guy found it and was using it in conjunction with that oldbar add-on so that he'd basically have the Firefox 2 urlbar.
Also, thanks again for the help with the go button. Since you guys were so helpful, does anyone know how to turn on the next/previous buttons on in the bar when using the type-to-search?
I don't think you can without using the full Find function. You can still go Ctrl+G and Ctrl+Shift+G if you're using type-to-search.

There is an extension called "oldbar" that disables the fancy UI of the new bar, but they literally removed the old matching code and replaced it. I don't think you can write an extension to modify the matching behavior, but I could be wrong.
What it would take is someone manually patching the codebase and rolling their own Firefox builds. This is, of course, a giant PITA* so as far as I know no one's done it yet.
*: Contrast to Pidgin, where their misguided UI changes led to a real fork of the project, but it's a lot easier to maintain an IM client than a web browser. Especially since they're just messing with the UI and not any of the internals.

What I meant is that I was under the impression that there existed an option in about:config that toggled the behaviour and this guy was using it with oldbar. I can't find the option anymore (if, indeed, it ever existed), so I may have been confusing it with browser.urlbar.matchBehavior.
Looking at this thread in mozilla.support.planing, it sounds like you're right about the new code completely replacing the old code.
First thing most people ask about is the new Awesome Bar. Picture might help.
If you're going to use it I respectfully ask that you use other hosting. Dynamic history/bookmark search as you type it into the address bar based on web page title or even URL . Also, anything without a web prefix or affix (www.com) will be inserted as a search into google and take you to the results page, rather than laughing at your nonexistant "recipes for duck" URL.
Edit: Wikipedia's image of it is dry and tasteless, like so many crackers. Use that if necessary:
You could steal the ones on the Wiki here if you did that (I suppose you could, I mean. Is that allowed under fair use?)
Just a quick bullet-point list of improvements might be useful (faster, less memory, etc.)
I think wikipedia stuff is usually under creative commons licenses. As a general rule though, I think it's probably ok for me to lift those images because of fair use. My only niggle is that they're from RC2.
I'm worried about making an image heavy op though, I might re-compress them as JPEG's to reduce the download size of the page.
EDIT: Also, the mac os x and linux images show wikipedia. I'd rather they show the default firefox start or a penny arcade shot.

Not just that - for some searches, it'll go I'm Feeling Lucky automatically (e.g. "penny arcade forum" or "filet mignon"). This is one of the things I've always liked about Firefox (not sure how long it's been there, but it's fantastic).
Also, the mac os x and linux images show wikipedia. I'd rather they show the default firefox start or a penny arcade shot.
Paint/GIMP/whatever is your friend... Any real differences in page rendering for, say, PA between OSes probably wouldn't be noticed (font rendering perhaps?).

Well, i'll just take some screen shots myself. I've got windows vista and xp installs, I own a Macbook Pro and own VMWare Fusion on the Macbook. (also got Vista and VMWare Workstation on my work machine)

I actually saved it originally to a PNG, then fiddled with the jpg settings. The PNG was 120+kb, as compared with the 78KB jpg I got it down to. Shit, wiki's PNG image looks shittier and is almost the same file size as mine despite being mostly white and a handful of pixels smaller. Most of that is likely due to the text size in that image, but still. Give me some credit here.
Samphis, the first post is just a wall of links. How did you miss it?

It hasn't been officially released yet and won't be until 10AM Pacific time. So like, three more hours. Apparently, downloading from the FTP site doesn't count for the download record, either. Go to www.spreadfirefox.com to download it....I'm sure their servers will be hammered when it releases, though.

I don't really understand the point of that, I mean.. they'll still see the downloads from their FTP server. It's not like they can't just point to the download logs as proof.
EDIT: It is the official release ArcSyn, it will be bit for bit identical to the one they show on the website. It's just they've put it on their FTP server so the mirrors can pick it up. They do this every release. All the technically savvy users and mirrors grab it from the FTP. And then they put it up on the website for everybody else to download. At that point is when the mirrors come in handy because that's when the seriously heavy traffic appears.

Damn. Haven't seen any of the release note pages by default since last year (Ubuntu replaced the default, I switched back to Windows and Help > Release Notes will now forever display the release notes for Ubuntu 7.10 <_<).
Seems faster than RC2, at least (didn't get RC3 because of laziness and a "malformed XML" error). Less of the hanging tabs so far. Always a good sign.

So... I have RC3, can I just run the updater at 10, or do I need to download the new installer?
does anyone know how to tweak the interface scaling? I use large font size and a large (144DPI), and the old Firefox 2 UI scaled quite nicely. the zoom is ok, since it seems to remember the level I set it on, but the interface is just awkwardly huge.
I presume you'd have to make a userChrome.css (or modifying an existing one) in order to make it behave like Fx 2. You could probably compare the default themes between Fx 2 and Fx 3 to determine what the differences are in this respect. I have noticed, though, that even with the default DPI, the scrollbar scales along with the full page zoom.

I understand that, I'm just having trouble nabbing it from the FTP link at work. I was going to try the web one when it is put up and see if I have better luck.
Also, since I'm running RC3, guess I'm running the full release already anyway.

Oh hey, the Firefox 3 download link itself works.
I modified the normal download Firefox 2 link from:
http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-2.0.0.14&os=win&lang=en-GB
To
http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-GB
And it downloads Fx3, of course i've got the FTP direct links in the op so it doesn't matter anyway. But it's definitely a sign it's coming soon.
