I don't really bother to remember URL's so the old functionality was pretty useless for me. I also have a shitton of bookmarks, often poorly organized so searching bookmarks is an upside, not a downside.
I am seriously surprised that anyone actually used the old URL autocomplete for anything. I mean, URLs. Many are not intuitive, e.g. "penny-arcade". It's fine if you remember the first few letters of a site, but since it doesn't search page contents you're still stuck browsing through filtered history rather than going right to the page with the content you wanted from yesterday's browsing session via title search.
There's an extension called "oldbar" that puts the old address bar back in for FF3. Though the whole addons site is down still so you can't get to it. But I would still encourage you people to stop being weenies and get used to the new hotness.

Yeah, seriously, all you guys that are complaining about the awesome bar have no idea what you are disrespecting.
Each and every url/bookmark/man page you visit via the awesome bar is weighted by frequency. Give it a week and the drop-down will look just like your old one in FF2, except you can also search your bookmarks and history from there too, just by typing in something slightly different.
Huh. That's odd. Installed, and it updated everything... but this is what my bookmarks looked weeks ago. All my new ones that I've added since then are missing. Anyone else notice this?

No, we realize what it does, we just don't want it to do that. 90% of the time when a computer program tries to guess what I am doing and do it for me, it guesses wrong and just makes things more annoying. I'm glad you like it, but I don't, and don't think it should have been made a default.
Oh my god, this is more than weeks old.
This is months old.
It actually cleared out a large swath of my bookmarks.
Fuuuuuuuck.

edit: Got it. Thank god they switched schemes for storing bookmarks, so the old file was still there. If anyone finds themselves in the same predicament, you can find your old bookmarks.html in the subfolder of:

And the fact that everyone and his dog are telling you that your assumptions are in error is not registering for some reason. We have used it, we are using it and it is fantastic. This is the Google of URL bars man!
Give it one week and then tell us it sucks. Or, hell, more than six hours would be good.
Also, since most of the point of the major version jump (2.0.0.14 -> 3.0) was to incorporate the back-end changes that power the awesome bar, I very much doubt it is going away/becoming optional any time soon.

It sucks. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's the unawesome bar. :P

How can I be in error? I prefer not to use the awesomebar, it is how I like to do things. I am glad you are so excited about it and that you like it so much, and I am glad that the plugin site is back up so that I no longer have to use it again. See how that works out for both of us?
I'm confused as to why the Awesomebar sucks. If I visit a site frequently I bookmark it. If I visit it all the time I put it on my bookmarks toolbar. But for sites I may have visited a week ago that I can't really remember I just type something into the Awesomebar and it's right there.

This only changes the look of the bar, however. The algorithm stays the same.
Wow, I'm suddenly thankful that I use del.icio.us's plugin to keep my bookmarks kept nice and safe on their servers. Either way, I plan on snagging it even though I have the latest Release Canidate.
I barely ever use bookmarks, when I do they are for sites that I barely ever visit, but still may need to access, or a temporary storage for something that I want to look at later. I just type in URLs. Every couple of weeks the stored URL thing gets too crowded and I clear it out. Awesomebar wouldn't even let me clear it and was clogging things up.
For some reason I can't middle click to plant a point and then move the mouse to scroll up or down, which I thought was a feature of the mouse and not FireFox. It's not a big deal, it's just something I did out of habit.
I really want my mouse gestures soon, though.

I've been using the FF3 betas and RCs for months and I still don't like it. I don't see why having to "train" my location bar so that it sort of emulates the old behavior that worked perfectly well is a good thing.

See, I have hundreds of bookmarks for sites i don't visit much or articles i wanted to read but didn't get a chance to at the time. I can now find them in a second or two. It's really cool.
I like it overall (I'd kind of forgotten it was coming out so when i went to download it it was ready and waiting). I just wish the add on site would come to life so i can get a different theme. I'm so used to the old black one the default is searing my eyes .
*Edit* Lux: It's in tools>options>Advanced>General and tick "use autoscrolling" I don't use it much but for some reason i still keep it on.

But you've actually used it right? Your opinion is based on some sort of long-term usage of the software?
As opposed to "oh noes, I downloaded this major version change upgrade and it does something differently than before! Quickly, to the downgrademobile!"
It's reactionary bullshit that drives me crazy, not actual thought. Indeed, I am very much pro-thought.
Have you tried typing the part of the url that isn't "xxx"? Assuming there is one, I mean.
Well, for my part, if you used my computer and started typing in anything, there's a good chance that my whole terrible porn history will be revealed. This is how it sucks for me, I can't speak for Box.

Can you stop assuming that people who disagree with you are idiots? It makes you look like an ass. I tried it out for a bit and realized it wasn't for me. I'm glad that you like it, but that doesn't mean everyone has to or that assuming people who don't like it are reactionary and anti-thought.
So I think FireGestures is a far better extension than Mouse Gestures Redox. It's got more built-in commands, the status updates are far less intrusive and adding commands via drawing is very simple.

Yeah, especially since porn sites try to have "known-like names". Let's just say, I have to type YouTube awfully fast if someone else is in the room. :winky:

I hate, hate, HATE the "awesome" bar. Stupid. Why can't you turn this feature off?

Like if I know a url is www.somegeneric.com/awesomesubfolder
instead of start typing the somegeneric domain i just start type awes
and first thing in the list.
What is that webpage?

It wasn't slow bandwidth, but the fact that their servers were continuously down/timing out.
You'd think that wouldn't be the case if they were trying to set a 5 million downloads in 24 hours world record ...

As for the Oldbar extension, if that's the one you are going for, good luck with that.
