We started telling a ghost story about a kid named Leroy Jenkins (based on the Jazz Musician's name) in 1998 at a camp I worked at for years. Then this little meme comes along and from that point on the story is ruined.
Sure we could change the name, but we have a cabin named after the guy in the story and people would notice... kinda ruins the fun for everybody involved.

Is it (the meme) really so well known that kids at camp will know it? I would think out of 10 kids, maybe 2 play WoW, and the chances they've seen that particular meme can't be that high.

Right?
One would think. At first when a kid noticed it I was surprised, the next year there were kids with Leeroy shirts from Hot Topic... then I knew we were done for.
This might not seem like a big deal, but anybody who has experienced summer camp with rich white middle schoolers knows the power of a good ghost story and its ability to scare the little pricks into a submission that no other threat can.

I worked at a scout camp and did the wilderness survival merit badge. I would take the kids out to the middle of nowhere and they would set up there make shift shelters to spend the night. They would then spend the night out there "alone" I was always just out of sight. This little camp out they do is after a week of "training" and me telling them all about the Yeti that lives in the woods. I would scare the crap out of the kids if they had been little shits to me all week or if they were good I would show up and make smores with them.

Hot Topic is the herald of the coming ruin of anything you used to be fond of or think was cool, apparently even ghosts' names.
You said this was in '98...is the meme that old or are you still working there?

it was really nice out last night
That would involve getting into a long term relationship with Odin and then hatefucking him.
And that would be hard to do when he's on fire.

We have a precedent for how to deal with that
