Opera 9.5 is the newest version of Opera, one of the best browsers out there and almost definitely the fastest. I urge everyone who uses the Internet to try it out for at least 5 minutes. Here is some new stuff:
Ability to save your bookmarks online and access them anywhere you have Opera
Faster Javascript and HTML handling
Super duper history search: type anything into your address bar from anywhere and it finds it in your history. Super fast. It's cool
Some sort of fancy web developer tool thing that I'll never use
Here is some stuff Opera has had for a bit that you might not know about:
Fast, easy mouse gestures (customizable to do anything, of course)
Great functionality right out of the box (aka you don't have to track down lots of extensions)
"Speed dial" thing on blank tabs that gives you quick access to web pages you commonly visit (IE7 stole this)
Full page zoom that lets you fit a page to your screen width (no broken H-Scroll) or zoom a whole page (Firefox 3 is stealing this second bit)
Easy customizability (drag and drop any part of the browser, or toggle it on/off)
Widgets galore (I have 2d and 3d function graphers but they get much more intricate)
Nerd cred: "Your browser only has 18% market share? Well mine's got 1% so hah"
Anything Firefox or IE have, Opera probably has
Downloading it now would be a good idea so you can install it and load up a website or something. I'm 99% sure you can import your bookmarks or whatever from wherever they are right now. The reason I ended up switching to Opera was the speed and the stability; Firefox would crash once every month or so and Opera doesn't really do that, and although I wasn't expecting any sort of speed boost, the increase was actually noticeable which I enjoy. I also like how I can change just about anything about Opera from inside Opera, easily, instead of tracking down an extension to do it for me. Also there's no memory leak so there's that.

Some more recent comparison from that Firefox thread show Firefox 3 being a little faster than Opera at like...Javascripty stuff, or something. I dunno. Opera's a better browser, in any case, though.
The Opera site isn't working for me now. What's changed since the last 9.5 beta?
Faster than than my browser? Opera 9.5 is faster than Opera 9.5? Incredible.
But yeah, it has tabbed browsing. It's cooler, though. It use to be called the MDI, or "multiple document interface" or some nonsense like that. Basically the browser is like a "desktop" and you can make the tabs like windows on this "desktop. Like this!
Super duper history search: type anything into your address bar from anywhere and it finds it in your history. Super fast. It's cool
A bit more detail on this, is that it searches the contents of the pages as well, meaning it will search all of the text in the pages in your history for the text you type in. I think Firefox 3 also has this feature too now, right?
Opera is a good browser; I switched to it a while back because it had more features on installation than Firefox, such has built in mouse gestures and text-to-voice (!!), and was a whole lot faster and more stable for me. Firefox has caught up a lot with Firefox 3, though. You can't go wrong with either.
And don't get confused by Xenogears of Bore's post; it used to be a browser you had to buy. It's been completely free since Opera 8 or 9.
Just downloaded it. Its good, snappier than the 9.5 beta I was running previously. Opera Link is quite a handy feature - Syncing bookmarks between work, my PC and phone is pretty cool. They plan on expanding its functionality as well. I'm not a huge fan of the new tab graphics though - Anyone know if theres a classic skin around yet?

also, this version has problems with importing mail accounts if you install over an older version, yes?
I use thunderbird, but someone else's place it kept not running the mail engine with an error like "Init() failed" after importing. I had to uninstall everything, import the mails & settings account by account and then it worked
I'm still using version 7.54 because of the panel toggle feature. It's a more intuitive way to view my bookmarks. Does the new version still have this? I've been thinking it's time to upgrade.
Also does it still cache pages so it doesn't redownload the page every time I hit the back or forward button? This is the main reason I haven't switched to Firefox.
I wish everyone on this board that whines about h-scroll breaking would just install Opera and shut up. Perfect resizing (and full-size images at a single click) means no more unwanted surprise h-scroll breakage ever again.
I love Opera so much. I've customized the hell out of mine, it's certainly way more flexible than Firefox. You can do pretty much anything you want and it's easy as pie. Such a perfect piece of software.

Oh hey, does anyone here know if it's possible to make Refresh and Stop separate buttons? I hate buttons that change. All the damn time I'll be tryin' to hit stop, but the page finishes loading right when I do, so I hit refresh instead.

There's also a button on the left side of the tab bar that looks like a wrench and one of those things from Men in Black that erased your memory crossing together.

It disappears if you apply the classic skin, unfortunately.

Right click... Customize. Go to the "Skins" tab and under "Find more skins" the "Opera Classic" is numero uno.
Been using Opera since forever and ever after a friend turned me on to it. I can't live without Mouse Gestures and at first Speed Dial was awkward but honestly I love it now. The Firefox add-ons to add Mouse Gestures are slow and sort of clumsy. The best thing about mouse gestures is that it allows me to have basically an address bar and a tab bar and no buttons.
I still use Firefox for all the scripty things I need, and as much as I hate to admit it I've found some pages that will not load in Opera that I have to load in Firefox. Having both seems to definitely be the best of both worlds.
I am really not trying to troll or whatever, but if Opera has all this cool features and stuff, why isn't everybody using it?
I mean, are there obvious downsides? I am using Firefox at the moment but I wouldn't care about switching to Opera if it's the better browser.
Is there something like Adblock for Opera? I remember using it fairly recently and seeing the content blocker but didn't seem to find much in the way of automatic updating filter sets or adding blanket blocks with wildcard entries and stuff like that. If it had that I'd be set to switch since I don't need much else in the way of extra extensions.

In general, there are more websites that do not work in Opera. Though, in most cases, it has nothing to do with Opera actually being incompatible, and everything to do with webmasters being idiots who decide to restrict their site to IE and Firefox for no good reason. For sites like this, there are options that you can enable per-site to make Opera pretend to be Firefox or IE, and they work fine.
Firefox extensions are something that people tend to miss, as well.

In many ways both Linux and OSX are better platforms than Windows, so why isn't a majority of people using them? Really, the fact that there may or may not be better alternatives out there have never mattered for most people.

You guys are confusing me.
The Opera site isn't working for me now. What's changed since the last 9.5 beta?
FF3 RC still chokes on bungie.net for me under Linux. Opera 9.5 handles it with amazing speed.
For a while there IE7 was faster than Opera, Opera has caught back up again.
*pokes his eighteen tabs*
*basically
I believe that was a crude attempt at internet sarcasm.
me or him? because he just stated he had no idea
Holy crap you're right and he didn't know!

I bask in my ignorance and offer a plate of cookies.
It's pretty handy when you need to display two pages at once, though.
they invented it..

It's my biggest Opera gripe, probably!
Enjoy!
Yes, it's both possible and easy to add
@ JohnDoe: The old skin? It should be the first skin listed if you open the appearance dialog (shift+f12) and click find more skins. Failing that, here's a direct link: http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins/info/?id=8085
New default skin is fucking horrible.
ALSO where did my little vertical line on the left side of the screen to open and close the sidebar go?
Edit: Got it. Awesome.
Edit 2: Oh, I figured it out just before you replied, japan.
Hit F4 to bring the sidebar up, Right Click -> Customise -> Show Panel Toggle at Edge of Window.
It disappears if you apply the classic skin, unfortunately.
Awesome - Perfect now.

Just try it and see if you like it.
