His face is all sorts of off. The eyeballs don't even line up.

    EDIT: Acrylics? Seriously?

That is not an easy medium. Why not oils or gauche instead?

You have mere seconds to blend with acrylics, otherwise it all falls apart.

I've got 4 self portraits to do for my life drawing class, one for fear, heroism, humor and tragedy. This is fear.

    fear2.jpg

I just finished the primary ink work on heroism, gotta do the background work right now and will upload a picture in a few.

I gotta say, I saw a picture of the fear one before the cross-contour lines were put in across the face and it was just massed in value shapes-- I liked that better than what you have now. It was easier to read and wasn't so busy. Being traditional, not too much you can do, but if you have that photo saved, I'd take a look back at it. Still nice though.

On the heroism one, I'd pay attention to the jawline. Right now, it's too high up. There should be atleast a couple inches between the bottom of the ear and the bottom of the jaw. Right now they are one in the same. Nice reflected light on the bottom of the nose. If you can pull the glossy look off with paint yet, I'd also try a hand at that. Right now, there isn't much defining the actual glasses to being glossy or looking like glass. The glasses look hollow.

Also, I know a ton of people who strictly went off photos with this assignment, but if I were you I'd try to look from direct observation as much as possible. Not only will it help you in the long run, but you'll start to notice things easier that way especially with as much life drawing as you have under your belt now.

Wow, that ended up being way longer than I thought. Cheers!

PS: You make me raff, ahaha.

eh, the photoshop is super crap, but it's just part of the process, like a thumbnail - its for reference for the final piece more than anything, like the color comp on the last page.

gotta scan the pencil tomorrow and do three more color comps tomorrow

Yeah that smoke was pretty sweet. The biggest problem is that the shin kicking is pretty low-key and would probably go unnoticed to most people. There's no wind up and it blends into the jumping around just before it.

I think what gets me with the shin kick is that they don't look like they are on the same plane. I think it would be better if both characters are level- rather than the girl being higher than the boy.

I third the smoke- i've tried that shit before- you have done a fantastic job!

the smoke was all decker, and yeah, he fucking nailed it

the shin kick was a problem, for sure. Somehow the boy ended up lower, and I really needed a bigger anticipation and response for it to read, but it was all done straight ahead and we didn't have time to do a test shoot of that part before we had to turn it in. Plus if you go frame by frame you can see that his leg switches on the actual kick itself - the windup is his right leg, then it somehow pops to become his left. Ooops.

so I've been working on my final painting for my tone color comp class - puting myself in the costume and environment for a game, movie or story, whatever.

these are the pencils I started with.

    Pencils-1.jpg

    here's some progress shots.

    About four hours in.

    progress2.jpg

    a couple hours later

    progress3.jpg

and where I'm at now, about twelve hours in.

    progress4.jpg

the photos show the painting far lighter than the actual painting, but it gives a solid idea. The face is intimidating as hell, but the rest is coming along okay. Not real happy with the gunblast, though, and a lot of the proportions and stuff are all kinds of weird. Oh well, not bad for my third or fourth painting ever.

I'm liking the rendering on the skulls/stones, but I think the general uniformity of their size and shape detracts a little bit.

I don't know if it's the quality of the photo or what, but the arching structure of the cave looks way better in the first shot than the last one. I think you smoothed it out too much- the roughness at the first stage was working well.

um. it's hard to tell because the flash reflects off the paint, but you definitely need more depth in your background. right now it looks like he's got power lines radiating out from him.

you're using acrylics, right? what colours do you have at your disposal? and can we get a better picture?

His right leg (your left) is way too small. I don't know if it's because his thigh is too thin but it's not reading well at all. Also the bottom right of his breastplate seems too wide.

If it were me I'd go back a step and get the shapes right before getting too much more involved in the rendering. Then again I know fuck all about acrylic, can you just paint over the top or is this kinda impossible?

yeah, like I said, some of the proportion is all fucked, but I'm not positive I will have time to fix those issues. I should have been more careful in the early stages, but I'm still learning to control the medium and the tools, so matching up to the pencils and seeing "down the road" is tough for me. The leg and chest drive me nuts, though, so I will see if I can address them.
