Can I SLI 2 different 8800's?

CleveraliasCleveralias Registered User regular
Just like the topic say - here are the details - I currently have a BFG tech 8800 GTS - the problem is there is no HDMI port and I want to hook it up to my 60" Wega to play Age of Conan - can I buy a different model 8800 video card (possibly different manufacturer) that has HDMI out and use it in conjunction with my current one in SLI or does SLI require Identical Cards (my mobo is SLI ready) ?

Nope. Have to be identical with everything except Hybrid SLI...and I think that only works with 9x cards.

    One more thing.

AoC doesn't work with SLI cards currently, you'll only use one in the end regardless.

You could just buy a DVI->HDMI cable and use your current card. DVI and HMDI are the exact same video signal.

Yeah that would be easiest route, HDMI and DVI like he said are the exact same video signal just HDMI has audio in it.

which of course means you'll need some way to move audio to the TV as well, but it should also be fairly trivial.

My TV has DVI in but won't output it at 1080p - I think is an HDCP issue - will the DVI-HDMI solution allow A sony to display 1080p from the 8800 ?

As far as I know two g80 GTS' will work in SLI. The same can said for g92 GTS' regardless of manufacturer. Even 320mb and 640mb g80 GTS' will work in SLI together.

I don't think that the graphic card will output audio :P

Some newer ATI cards do. Not sure about Nvidia ones though.

The 9800GX2 has an HDMI port on it, HDMI does audio but I'm not sure if the card supports that part of the connection.

I think the way it works is if the GPU is the same you can SLI it but any differences will be capped to the lower end card. So if you SLI a 320 and a 640 together the 640 will be capped at 320mb.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question - I purchased a DVI to HDMI converter and now my TV is displaying the output from my 8800 gts in is full 1080p glory! for some reason I loose about 1/2 inch around the edge of the screen put other than that the picture is perfect!

What res is your TV? Make sure you're outputting to the TV at the TV's native res.

BTW this thread http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=31&threadid=2198148&enterthread=y says that the two SLI'd cards can be from diff. manufacturers... just needs to be the same model
