Windows update not installing or something

Over the past week or so, I have installed "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181) several times a day. What the hell is going on?

    That particular problem seems to be quite widespread (my mother's got the same problem, so I've had to google it a couple of times). Seems to happen on both XP and Vista, too. MS has a page on this problem and how to solve it. I haven't had time to fiddle about with the third bullet-point in the Known issues list, but it worked for at least one guy.

    i think the latest update is doing the same thing
    (?)
    i saw the similar thread from a few days ago and am trying to manually install stuff, but i don't think the auto windows update thing is aware of what i did or something

    apparently service pack 3 is out? is this some huge thing like service pack 2 was?

    Service Pack 2 for XP was sort of a service pack oddity. Usually service packs are just security rollups and background stuff. SP3 doesn't add anything major but if you're really interested, here is the overview page. I would definitely recommend installing it.

    Yeah, I installed sp3.

    The updater keeps telling me damn 936181 is still not installed. What the hell? I downloaded it and manually installed.

    i read about doing it that way in this thread
