So today I hop in a random room to test out my sniper. Thinking I was only against 1 person.
15 minutes of me running around trying to find what I thought was one person, capturing combas along the way.
15 minutes later, the game ties at 7 combas a piece, and it turns out there were TWO people on the team.
How the FUCK can two people not
1) Coordinate to hunt me down?
2) Rush and rape my base.
3) Win a combas victory against one person.
they probably thought there were two opponents also....they probably didn't split up to take more towers...and base killing in anything other than a pile whore or heavy gunner takes time.
Are there any squads with people playing right now that have some open spots?

You're making a transparency do determine distance? Don't bother.
1. Learn the size of the map.
2. Divide by ten -- you now have the distance of one grid
3. Multiply size of one grid by number of grids between you and target
4. Aim
5. Fire
6. If shot missed, use the first shot as a guide for the next.
There's your problem. How many enemies do YOU fight who are exactly north/south from you, or exactly east/west of you?
How many times have you aimed a heavy gunner type howitzer shot at an enemy, fired, and gotten a direct hit with your first shot, using your method? After I hear your answer I'll share mine. :-)
Edit: I guess if you only fire at nearby enemies your answer might be skewed, so I should change the question: I'm only talking about enemies 600 'units' away or more, who are alone, such that if you miss one enemy you don't accidentally hit another one.

So guys.. I'm playing a sniper mission, I take out one set of nasties from one assigned sniping point, but I can't make it to the second sniping point before they order a retreat.

Ah yes, the sniper mission from the demo.
Don't worry about making it to the second point. There's a nearly-constant stream of enemies, so once you take out the first set, sit there and watch for more.
Also, remember to rotate guns and keep putting fire on targets. They're gone much too quickly.
When they order a retreat, that means some enemies got past you and they were unable to kill the enemy before taking too much damage.

if you're playing the one i had trouble on, the trick is to go to the top of the hill near where you start, but so that you can look down the long road, you will be able to start shooting the main squad of enemies immediately, and alternate between the main squad and the small squad as needed.

Nah, I got through it after: I barged through the first squad to the second point straight away, running and gunning them as I went, then started firing at the front of the second squad.
Now I'm playing scout missions which are... interesting. Started off fairly boring, but I just did the base destruction one, and that was fairly cool, if only for the fact that I fitted my scout with two anti-hound rocket launchers, that fire in unison and take out most quadropeds in two shots.

Yes they do carry over.
And they definatly help you start off in mp, as you aren't completly useless with all the SP parts.
Multiplayer works like Mechassault 2, only I hate it more. It sounded so wonderful on paper though.
There are three countries slugging it out over Neroimus. Tarakia, Moskoj, and Sal Kar. The entire single player campaign is a prelude to this war. In multiplayer you choose one country to join, and this determines what kind of parts you can buy and mechs you can buy pre-assembled. You can change any time, though.
Tarakia is backed by America, they have balanced parts and mechs in terms of power, weight and performance. Morskoj is former Russian territory. They have heavy, powerful parts and mechs. Sal Kar is all one unspecified ethnicity. They have faster, lighter parts and mechs.
When you start online for the first time, you are given some money and a free mech of your choice of Role Type. It's very bare-bones though. You should use your money to pimp it out. Complete Story mode as much as you can, with as high a rank as you can to get an assload of parts.
To participate in the Neroimus War (Conquest Mode) you MUST join a squad or start your own. [this kills the game for me.] Squads are clans of up to 20 players, with one Supervisor (leader) Squads choose a spot on the Neroimus Map and duke it out with another squad.
I really wish I could join a Neroimus fight by running a search on what group in my country needs whatever RT I am at the moment, and dump me there. It would make me the happiest gamer in the world.
You don't need to S-Rank every mission in single player if you don't want the parts that mission offers. For example, if you have no desire to play a TC or heavy gunner, there's no need to S-Rank a mission that gives you an NA maker or some heavy arms. Check gamefaqs, as they probably have a list somewhere of what you get for what misison.
Um, your squad all gathers in the lobby. When someone either joins or creates a game, you can go to Missions (or whatever the Flag icon is), Neroimus War, Squad Rendezvous. Alternately, you can Search for Missions or Launch a new Mission yourself from the Neroimus War screen. There are other options as well (Free Battle, Individual Missions), but they don't affect the MMO aspect of the game, and are for fun/cash.
From the lobby you can also access the garage, where you can purchase parts, modify your mech, create decals, etc.
To win a game you either kill all of the enemy mechs (there will be anywhere from 1-6), or you blow up the enemy base. There can be anywhere from 2-6 possible bases that are theirs (depending on the map). The only way to tell is to get close enough to see it, if it has a flag painted on the side.

That's pretty much all there is to it.
Don't forget the COMBAS win. If time expires, both sides' bases remain, and at least one hound from each side survives, the squad with the most combas towers captured wins. If you have an equal number, you get the "both armies failed" message.

You only see enemies on the radar if you have an NA Maker on your mech. Otherwise, you only see COMBAS ranges and affiliations, and have to use sonar(like Halo 2) to find your enemies when they get close by but are out of visual.
why can't i ever see enemy vessels on my map? does it not do that? last night iplayed a 15 minute game and didn't see a single person the entire time.
As has been stated, you only see enemies on your map if you are a commander. Otherwise, you will see anything that is moving on your radar screen as a little white dot.

You can only see enemies on your map if you are a commander.
Just to add clarity, "being a commander" means you have an NA Maker on your mech. NA makers are big and heavy, and require a lot of power. You CAN be other roles while you're carrying an NA maker. For example, I carry an NA maker AND a bunch of artillery weapons. I could carry almost double the weapons if I left the NA maker off.
When you have an NA maker, the little map in the corner also has a small picture of the map, and some gridlines. The big map has a large circle with a number in it for each of your teammates, a large circle of the opposite color for each enemy, and a small circle for friendly/enemy computer-controlled units.
Weird how without an NA maker you lose just the map graphic overlay that you already get by pressing Y. It's not like your mech doesn't have the information, because you see it just fine pressing Y. It just CHOOSES not to show it to you in that small window, with no NA maker.

Good point, seems kind of odd to carry around an NA maker if you're not a commander, but to each his own.

Also, I wasn't quite clear in my other statement. You will see anything that is moving WITHIN A CERTAIN AREA AROUND YOU on your radar, not anything that is moving, ever, anywhere.

If you leave a squad it loses the renown you earned for it.

Are there any Active PA squards on? I really want to join a squad that works together and aren't little annoying brats screaming into the mic.
Good luck. I've noticed no one is keen on answering that question at all.
I think people's general interest with this game is already going down fast. If there were a lot more parts, and better ways to access them, I might still care as much as I did like two weeks ago. But it's starting to get rather dull.
New info from the official forums: Radiators do NOTHING to stop homing missles. They have absolutely no effect on them. Anti Missle measures are the only things that have a chance of saving you, and even they aren't even that great because if someone has two homing missle launchers, one or two will get through anyway. Missles are already powerful, but homing missles? With all the imbalances in this game, like piles killing HQs in three seconds, or outnumbering a person three to one but still losing because he took freaking communication towers, (how's he going to hold them after time runs out?), or getting killed by ultra fast scout homing missle carriers, this game is starting to grate on my nerves. The connection issues like everyone getting kicked out of a match for no reason isn't helping things either. This game has potential, but it's unfortunately flawed.
