I've got MGS3 but I've not played past the prologue, yet I just picked up MGS4
I plan on playing through 3 with a spoiler-free walkthrough just so I can be up to speed for MGS4 (I've not finished the first nor the second, even though I've played both.)
Is this worth doing or should i just go straight for 4? Are the storylines related enough that I might miss out on stuff in 4 if I dont play 3?
I'm posting here instead of the gamefaqs forum as I usually do as I've had a GTA4 spoiled for me by the bastards that inhibit the place, and this isnt really a game-content related question. If that's not a good reason go ahead and move it accordingly.
I'd love to be the one disappoint you when I don't fall down
You will miss out on a lot for not playing the first one, I didn't and I played two and three and was completely lost. Don't worry about it too much, because unless you spend a good portion of your life studying MGS canon you won't understand it at all.
I've completed 1,2,3 and 4. I felt as though I was able to fully appreciate MGS4 because of this, since there's alot of things that reference the previous games (not just story-wise), moments that felt nostalgic/ironic, and generally everything just felt enhanced.
It's still a damn fine game otherwise, but I'd advise you to play through the previous games to get the complete picture.
There are a lot of videos of cutscenes and big plot points for the previous MGS games on Youtube, if you don't want to actually play the game. Some fans may consider it blasphemy, but it can be more time-efficient.
i'm sort of in the same boat. i've played up to the end of the first part of MGS3 (Virtuous Mission) and always get stuck or stop there. MGS3 doesn't seem to be clicking for me in the gameplay department like MGS2 did.
does anyone have any general suggestions on playing MGS3, or just how to approach the game? i really would like to finish it...

I'm quite in the same boat, having just passed through the Virtuous Mission myself and trying to catch up to MGS4. I can't seem to get the hang of any CQC moves at all in MGS3, and everytime I try to sneak up on anyone, no matter how slowly I move, they hear me before I can grab them. The game's awesome, but it just seems much less forgiving than MGS2. I would also appreciate any advice here.

Use the digital pad to sneak on people, not the analogue controller - they can hear you coming with that. Also make sure you have the right camo on if you want to be sneaky.
The game starts off a little slow with like 20mins of Codec from the boss....i found that part to be the most boring only because the conversation went no where. You can probably skip that codec conversation with her and just move along.
As for CQC, its just a good way to knock someone out quickly, press O (i think thats the button) and an opposite direction to strongly knock em out for a few seconds, or grab them from behind and slit their throat. Its essentially same thing as before, but with 2-3 new animations/moves.
You actually get different endings depending on what you do. The canonical story is that you resist torture. But you get information you wouldn't get otherwise if you give in
do you mean the part with getting the 3 chips? That was kind of the dull part in part 1 but it was just before the climax for the game. Pt 2 has a lull only it involves spraying bombs but its a good game, especially if you played part1 on ps1.....pt 3 just has a long intro codec conversation that was boring as hell but you can skip over it. The rest of it i found to be really fun regardless if you played sneaky or run and gunned (it was definitely much better to run and gun in part 3)
Pt 4 i havnt played yet
essentially if you didnt like part 1, you probably wont enjoy the other 2 so much.

Uh that's completely incorrect. I mean yeah you need to spend time reading up on MGS even after playing 1-3, but if you remember most of the important events and pay good attention during 4, you'll understand everything. You don't need to put that much time into it.
I honestly can't imagine playing through 4 without beating the first 3. It's like the story is more important then the damn gameplay. All the loose ends being tied up will mean nothing to you.
Similar situation to the OP. Only Metal Gear I'd played before a few days ago was MGS2:Subsistence or whatever the fuck they called it for the Xbox port. I beat it, the gameplay was fun, but I really didn't havea clue what the fuck was going on half the time. Characters would appear and I knew I was supposed to be in shock or something but it was my first time meeting them.
Now that I've got a PS3 I wanted to jump in to MGS4 but I remembered how lost I was in 2 and it'd probably just be worse with 4. Two days ago I bought the MGS:Essentials Collection for $30. Get MGS1/2/3 for $10 a pop, good deal. Playing through all of them now (and 2 again) before I even touch MGS4.
Right now I'm still on the first game and even though the graphics are as bad as you'd expect for the PSX/N64 era, the gameplay really holds up. Not only that but the story is awesome and knowing there's three more games that continue it is pushing me through.
I'd recommend picking that up, and reading the story for Metal Gear and Metal Gear: Solid (The original MSX games) on Wikipedia, which will give you a little backstory on Snake, Big Boss, and Metal Gear. Then you can step right into MGS1, which does a little bit of backtracking for those who don't know the original games, and be right on the ground floor of the whole series.

Hot damn, thank you. I feel like a fool for not noticing that I could use the D-pad.
On the topic of storyline and previous metal gear solid games, though, how important is Portable Ops in terms of continuity and plot? Is it a 'must play' after finishing MGS3, but before starting MGS4?

It's surprisingly important, but I did not play it and got along fine. It just expands on some things that are explained in the game anyways.

How long are 1, 2 and 3? Could I finish them all in a couple weeks of dedicated playing?
Definitly these arn't the longest games. 2 took me only about 10 hours. And this
link here explains the stories of all of them very well if you just want to play 4 and get the most out of it.
1 can easily be finished in a night. 2 and 3 should each be spread over three days each, or two solid days.

If I just play through guns blazing, will it affect the story at all?
Will I be missing much should I just submit?

You should consider that.
Let's play Mario Kart or something...
Still a very good deal.
