Waiting for potential employers to get back to you

I'll keep this brief.

I applied for a low level position at a company a few days ago, I meet the qualifications and optional stuff and on paper have a very good chance of being hired. I was told that the company is always hiring for this position, but not that they were specifically looking for a position to be filled.

If I do not receive a reply, how long do I wait before I call up and ask, or do I not ever ring?

Today! Just call and let them know you applied a few days ago and ask about the status of the application. Always do follow up calls.

Actually one of my former places of employment wouldn't even look at someones application/resume until they did a followup call.

Keep in mind that places will always say they are hiring. Always. Even if they have too many people. They either may need someone soon, or they may just not want anyone to think they are being discriminated against. One more piece of advice. Pick an appropriate time to call. I help make hiring decisions at a restaurant and nothing bothers me more than people calling about an application during the busiest time of day.
