Are platformers dead?

edited June 2008 in Games and Technology
It seems over the years, platform games have been on the decline. I mean, there's still the Jak and Daxter series, and the Ratchet and Clank series, but other than that, I haven't found any new platformers worth playing.

I do play RPG's sometimes...but mostly just Final Fantasy or Pokemon.

I prefer to play jumping puzzles than strategize. It's just not the same.

I'm really longing for a good platformer on the Playstation 3. Can someone help me?

    Uncharted has platforming?

That's really all I can think of.

The platforming in Uncharted is pretty fun, though.

Uncharted is kind of a platformer... I think. I mean, it has some platforming. Right?

    The Prince of Persia games...

New Sonic game coming that might not be balls...

Yeah, I think you're right. Most of the platformers left are action/platform hybrids (like the new Bionic Commando), and a lot of them look to focus more on the action part.

You should look into the indie scene.

The upcoming Fez looks amazing, and if you haven't already, you should really get Aquaria (which is a sort of underwater metroid.)

Really? I heard Uncharted was an FPS. I do like Naughty Dog games, though.

If you're not just looking at consoles, there have been plenty of recent platformers on the DS and PSP. I don't know the PS3's selection very well though.

I like to see platforming mixed in with other genres. I recently finished up Mr. Robot, an indie PC game, which had the traditional turn based RPG combat. When you weren't fighting, though, you were hopping and bopping and moving crates instead of gabbing with NPCs. More genres need platforming added to them.

Yeah, it's sort of a platformer/puzzle game. Even if it's not considered a platformer at all I still say everyone who plays games should play it. :D

I get a feel we'll start squeezing blood from stones soon, so I shall cast the first (few, really):

-God of War (Had platforming....I guess...)
-Devil May Cry series (well, 1 did. 2 didn't. Not sure about 3. Think 4 did.)
    -Ninja Gaiden
    -Shinobi/Nightshade.

Yeah, hope you've got an 80/60 gig PS3 for most of those suggestions.

Indie games on Mac and PC would be your best bet for finding new platformers. Not to be a sitewhore, but the game linked in my sig is an action/platformer and it's pretty rockin'.

On the major consoles, you're probably looking at XBLA/equivalents for getting the old school platforming feeling, but outside of that you've basically got the Prince of Persia series, Super Mario Galaxy, and various other games already mentioned.

I'll agree with the indie scene thing.

Cave Story. Cave Story. Cave Story.

Cave Story is a really awesome action platformer similar to Metroid / Zelda in style. It could have been a missing SNES game in its own right, surprisingly high quality for an indie developed title. And it's free (it was pretty much a labour of love for the creator).

Motocross games are the new plattformers. No, really! It's all about rythm jumping, choosing lines and getting blazing speeds. They should make a Sonic game with the mx vs atv-engine.

The transition to 3d was especially tough on platformers, and they were never ubiquitous after that. Most of the old difficulties (camera, controls, graphics) seem to have been since overcome though, so I think we can expect good things.

Most of the games posted in this thread are not PS3 games. Just sayin.

Aquaria is Metroid underwater, not really a platformer.

Anyway this TT is pretty silly. You don't get to say "[genre] is dead" when you can't be arsed to buy the platforms that are overflowing with said genre (most notably, Wii and DS in this case).

Anyway, here are some that were not mentioned yet but also notable:

    - New Super Mario Bros
    - Super Princess Peach
    - Kirby Canvas Curse
    - Kirby Squeak Squad
    - Yoshi's Island DS

If there is justice in this world, platformers will live on. A lot of them suck, but every once in awhile a platformer comes along that's just plain magical.

So, to sum things up, platformers are certainly not dead. There are many games that have platforming elements to them (LEGO Star Wars, Portal), or are platformers but don't look quite like one (Aquaria), or come from indie-companies that you may not be familiar with, or some/all of the above.

I do agree that if all you're looking for is carbon copies of Jak & Dexter, Ratchet & Clank, Banjo-Kazooie, etc. you may think that "platformers are dead" but that's far from the case.

Well, it sure does have a *lot* of platforming for something that isn't a platformer, but ok, it's not a pure platformer. Then again neither are most games people would put in this category.

I was horribly burned by Mr. Robot. The demo was too short for me to realize how crappy the game really was.

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. Although it is a JRPG, you spend most of the game 2D platforming. It's an odd mix, but it works wonders.

Read the OP. He is looking for platformers in the traditional sense (Super Mario-alikes), with jumping etc. Aquaria is not a platformer, more of a treasure hunt with a lot of swimming back and forth and nifty spell mechanics and boss battles etc. Essentialy Super Metroid with swimming instead of jumping.

It's an amazing game mind you, but not a platformer.
