Aquaria is Metroid underwater, not really a platformer.
Well, it sure does have a *lot* of platforming
Read the OP. He is looking for platformers in the traditional sense (Super Mario-alikes), with jumping etc. Aquaria is not a platformer, more of a treasure hunt with a lot of swimming back and forth and nifty spell mechanics and boss battles etc. Essentialy Super Metroid with swimming instead of jumping.
It's an amazing game mind you, but not a platformer.
I read the OP and several of the game in the series he mentions in it are hardly just traditional platformers.

He only mentions Jak and Daxter and Ratchet.
And Final Fantasy and Pokemon admittedly, but that had nothing to do with the topic at hand obviously.

I wouldn't call the R&C games pure platformers, and certainly not more "Super Mario-alike" than a whole bunch of the games mentioned in this topic already.

Anyway, this is starting to drift a bit off-topic and I don't think we'll agree on this so let's just leave it at that. To contribute something again I'll suggest Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee for the oXbox. Not everyone thought it was as good as the previous games in the series (and maybe it's not...), but I loved it
The free indie game Knytt Stories is pretty damn good.
My girlfriend linked me over to this and it's really damn good. Plus, there's a world editor / maker, which is shockingly detailed, but it means you can have more than just the original to play. Neat music in it too. Windowed mode being tiny and not resizeable is the only negative aspect of this. And one last quick note: my girlfriend was also in the process of making a really goddamn hard world to play through. I got stuck at 2/3 through what she made so far because she just looooooves those damn lasers. :x
Cave Story, too, is another great one. It's fun, it's got a really oldschool feel to it, and is free.

Yeah alright. Didn't mean to be a dick or anything, but it's just that lumping the "Metroidvanias" (i.e. Metroid series/SOTN-esqua Castlevanias/Aquaria/LostWinds/did I miss any others?) in with all the other platformers somehow just feels... wrong. Almost as if you're doing them a disservice, because they're so much more and deserve their own moniker. That is all.
I was put off platformers for a long time by Star Wars Ep. II on the GBA, but these screenies are making me drool slightly. I have been cured! And I need a towel.
Patapon is definitely not a platformer. It's a rhythm/real time strategy game. Yeah.
I say, N and the retail version N+. Very good ninja style puzzle platforming.
Also Assassin's Creed.
I've never really gotten into 3D platformers, and I think the addition of things like shooting has illustrated the main problem with them -- when you lose the jumping precision that you had in 2D, you need to add another element to make the games fun. I mean, shit, Mario went from jumping something like 6 times his height down to once his height, and the idea of stomping bad guys on your trek through a level went by the wayside, replaced by far away platforms. It's really boring to kill bad guys by jumping on top of them in 3D, and it's way too easy to screw up.
And, sure enough, almost all of the examples of modern platformers in this thread are 2D. I think the OPs gripe about the demise of platformers really can be extended out to the standard 'demise of 2D' that gets trotted out every once in a while.
It's actually one of the things I've been liking less about the DS -- it's gone from a good place to get 2D games into a platform of bad 3D and "other" games, rather than novel platformers and the like.
I dunno, I think good platformers can be done, what with Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed. I think the main thing is, since games have gone 3D, jumping around gets kindof monotonus. So you throw in shooting/ stabbing/ more flesh out combat to compensate. Sure, it's not "Pure" platforming, but if you want that play New Super Mario Bros.
Also, forgot to throw this in there, but MIRRORS EDGE LOOKS SO FUCKING AWESOME AND IT'S A FIRST PERSON PLATFORMER AND IT LOOKS AWESOME OMGGGGGGGGGG.
For those suggesting Mario, I don't have a Wii, or DS.
And for right now, no Ps2.
I looked up Portal, it's first-person. Not third person.
I'm currently playing Uncharted, I just got it today. It's really different, not what I was hoping for. The main character is annoying, and cliche.
I'm sorry, I'm extremely picky.
I don't hate 2D platformers, I play Jazz Jackrabbit 2 sometimes...But it makes me discouraged to see that Naughty Dog has brushed aside such a great series like Jak and Daxter.
Maybe I'm not to broad-minded on genres, but I like how platformers give me a sense of total control over my environment.

You said you had a PSP, so did you play Daxter? Fun game.
Would Sly Cooper happen to be heavily influenced by Sonic the Hedgehog? Or is this just some sort of 3D platformer tradition?
Edit: And just so someone in this thread says it, Rayman 2 (aka Rayman Revolution) is amazing, has a DS version, is reportedly compatible with PS3, and needs to be played by everyone who loves 3D platformers.
Edit 2: But yeah. Assassin's Creed is the only 3D platformer I can even think of that came out for PC recently. Which is quite sad; DOS was like, the king of run & gun platformers.

I guess I'll second knytt and knytt stories too

Rubbish combat but awesome platforming sections.

Sidenote: There needs to be a Tomba! 3 someday. Really.

I've been replaying the first one just recently. Fuck me it's so fabulous.
Perhaps in a parallel universe...
What do you mean? Paper Mario 1 & 2 were RPGs but Super Paper Mario is a platformer.
I love how Phanpy crossed over from Pokemon to the Kirby franchise. Hopefully it evolves into Donphan halfway through the game.
...A universe with Wii puns even more horrifying!
Phonetically it's pretty much the same as Banjo-Kazooie.
Get your wallet, Nintendo.
yeah, but SPM's platforming is pathetic.
dream a little dream or you could live a little dream

Yeah, I second that. And it wasn't very good as an RPG, with not much customization going on (I miss the level up bonuses that I could control).

I just remembered. i was looking forward to playing Starcraft Ghost, but it looks like a Duke Nukem Forever situation.

You mess with the dolphin, you get the nose.
The sequels are rubbish though.
My Ps3 is not backwards compatible.
However, when I have the money, I'm going to buy a used slim Ps2.
